There's a post doing the rounds on facebook about how dressing gown is the right way to say it.

I know that house coat used to be a thing and stuff but I call it both a house coat and a dressing gown interchangeably.

What do you call it? (And where are you from incase that changes it?)

House coat - Newport wales but I get that from my parents who are from Stourbridge West Midlands

MaynJune · 09/01/2017 14:32

Definitely dressing gown - Scotland.

Housecoat is old-fashioned. It was a sort of dressing gown, nylon, often quilted, not the overall things.

DaisyQueen · 09/01/2017 14:34

Dressing gown north-east. MIL calls hers ahouse coat, even though it's a dressing gown Grin

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 09/01/2017 14:35

regardless this should only be worn up to 11am, and never outdoors Grin

Dressing-gown here (grew up in Wales, now live in SE England. A housecoat was something my Mum and Grannies wore to do the housework ( a pinafore with sleeves and buttons up the front). A friend calls hers a 'robe' , but she's just trying to be posh and has adopted the American term.

A bit like the difference between a flannel and a facecloth or washcloth. I say flannel, many here say facecloth.

Dressing gown (SE). A housecoat is a flowery nylon thing you wore over your clothes to do the cleaning - quite different from a dressing gown.

fishonabicycle · 09/01/2017 14:38

Yep. Dressing gown. South east. A house coat is one of those sort of overall type things my granny used to wear to do housework in.

MLGs · 09/01/2017 14:39

That's a dressing gown. London.

I thought a house coat was different. A different material and more structured.

WaitrosePigeon · 09/01/2017 14:39

Never heard of house coat in my life Confused

Dawndonnaagain · 09/01/2017 14:41

Dressing Gown, as others have said, Housecoat is different.

FannyWisdom · 09/01/2017 14:42

I own both.
indulgent

Towel dressing gown for after shower or over pj's and a bonefide house coat.
Like a hoody but no hood and longer to keep my front clean.

I live on the edge here in Yorkshire.

BlackbirdSingsInTheDeadOfNight · 09/01/2017 14:43

Another one here who instantly thought "Hilda Ogden!" I can see her now in her rollers and headscarf, wearing that multi-coloured overall thing (housecoat) and brandishing a feather duster....

I call the item in the picture a dressing gown - I live on the south coast.

YerAWizardHarry · 09/01/2017 14:43

I call it a dressing gown and DP calls it a housecoat, both born and bred NE Scotland

FannyWisdom · 09/01/2017 14:43

And for reference

Housecoat and shopping = fine..

Nowt like wearing a dressing gown.

peggyundercrackers · 09/01/2017 14:43

we call it a goonie

JellyTeapot · 09/01/2017 14:44

Dressing gown - Fife/Essex hybrid.

ratspeaker · 09/01/2017 14:44

Dressing gown. Scotland.

To me a house coat was the sort of thing my granny wore, over clothes , when doing dusty or dirty housework. So of like a lab coat.

JanuaryMoods · 09/01/2017 14:45

Light weight = housecoat
Heavy weight (towelling etc) = dressing gown

OohhItsNotHoxton · 09/01/2017 14:46

That is a dressing gown.
Housecoat are like posh aprons/overall.

FannyWisdom · 09/01/2017 14:49

Mine is like this to wear indoors for cooking or cleaning.

DireTires · 09/01/2017 14:53

Robe- London

SenecaFalls · 09/01/2017 14:59

Housecoat is still a term used in the US; it refers to this type of garment, also called a duster.

housecoat

ArcheryAnnie · 09/01/2017 15:04

Dressing-gown.

Agree with the others that a housecoat is a sort of all-over pinny that you wear to keep dirt off your regular clothes.

1horatio · 09/01/2017 15:09

Our housekeeper has a housecoat. I have an apron Wink
