Newborn not feeling well

I'm not sure where I should post this so went with aibu.

Im a first time mummy.

My lo (4weeks old) has been off the last 2-3 days she sounds like she has some mucus on her chest she coughs but not loads she's had a persistent sneeze since week 1. The last couple of days she is different she won't settle she is crying all of the time nothing seems to be working she is not interested in food. I'm having to express as she isn't feeding at her usual times and when she does take the expressed stuff she is only having 1-2 oz I've tried giving her a dummy in case she just needs to comfort but she just chokes and spits it out she has a clean bum and has been burped I'm not sure what else to do. Ive tried running the hot taps in the bathroom and sitting in there for a bit. She doesn't have a runny nose but a few small boogies.

Should I take her to A&E or is that a bit excessive?

Would really appreciate some advice.

Does she have a temp?

Is she having her normal amount of wet and poo nappies?

Are her lips moist? Does she cry tears when she cries?

Sounds like she has a blocked nose. Get some saline nose drops from GP or HV tomorrow.

Is her temp ok? Can u see HV tomorrow or ring them?

If you get really worried then better to be safe than sorry, however my dd seemed like this-started crying nom stop for 5 days-everyone said it was colic. People are sceptical but I took her to a cranial osteopath & it worked wonders.

At 4 weeks old she prob doesn't have normal feed times, just feed when she's hungry/crying.

How are the nappies / temp / fontanelle normal?

Does she have a temperature? When was her last feed? When was her last wet nappy?

If you are worried maybe think about calling 111 or the out of hours doctors service rather than going straight to a&e

If you are worried OP then call 111 and they will get you an out of hours GP appt. 4 weeks is so tiny, yes it will probably be nothing but if you are concerned then definitely ring!

My baby is 7 weeks and was exactly like this last week. She dropped from the 50th to 25th percentile in weight too. I mentioned it to the health visitor as she has been congested since birth, and she said it is potentially silent reflux. They can get cold-like symptoms and the slow down in feeding is possibly due to an agitated and painful throat.

In the absence of a fever and any signs of dehydration as listed above I wouldn't think this would warrant a trip to A&E. You could always call NHS direct and express your concerns. Mothers know best and all that!

Is the cough bad? If so it could be bronchiolitus and should be seen by a dr - call out of hours.

If you pull her vest up does it seem like she's sucking in under the ribs with each breath?

She doesn't have a temp I have been keeping an eye on that for the last few days.

She last fed properly around 1.30pm today she has had a couple of drops since then but not anywhere like her normal amounts. She has a healthy appetite usually drinking around 4-6oz every 2 hours but she just isn't interested in feeding like she normally is I have tried putting her the boob the settle and she just crys. She doesn't have a blocked nose I have already bought some saline drops and it has had no effect I've tried infracol as thought it might be wind when it first started but if anything it felt like she just got worse.

She's breathing very heavily it sounds like she is gargling water she does have a cough but it's not terrible.

If she hasn't fed for 7 hrs at 4 weeks old I'd be getting a healthcare professionals opinion, especially with the gargling sounds you mention. Call 111.

It sounds like you're right to. E concerned if she hasn't fed properly since 1.30 and is breathing heavily. I'd definitely call out of hours gp (we have a good service here, better than 111).

I think you should go to A&E with this immediately. I am surprised others are so sanguine about it. You have a tiny 4 week old who is feeding badly and breathing poorly. No A&E department will ever be upset with checking out a tiny baby.

They go downhill fast especially if they are struggling to breathe. I would go to A&E now in your shoes.

It could well be reflux.

What colour are her lips? Is she warm all over? Is her breathing faster than normal? I think you should call 111, but I think they will want a doctor to see her if she isn't feeding and her breathing sounds bad.

If she's breathing fast, or working very hard to breathe, she needs to be seen, either out of hours tonight or GP tomorrow. see video above - strip her off and lay her on her back, and watch her ribs.

Get Dr or go to a/e. Has she had wet nappies, is her mouth dry? I'd go now tbh.

If any part of her is blue, if resp rate is high, or if sternal recession (pulling in under ribs) , then it can be signs of respiratory distress. That's 999 territory, especially with such a tiny one.

What larrygrylls said. She's tiny, she's not feeding well and her breathing has changed. I'd go to A&E. They will be nice to you, you are a worried new parent.

I agree actually, forget 111 and go to A&E. No dr will mind seeing such a tiny baby. Better to be safe.
