AIBU to be so fed up and confused on pyjama issue

mummyof2pr · 08/01/2017 19:30

AIBU to be serverly annoyed with all the judgements on pyjama wearers?

Can someone explain to me what the big deal over wearing pyjamas is? I don't understand. I shower daily, I wash my clothes if they are used/unclean. When I get up I get dressed go about my day, come home and shower and put pyjama pants on until I get into bed. I take them off before bed as I only sleep in my underwear. If I don't have anything to do in the day I'll wake up and put the pyjama pants on because they are comfortable and warm. If I then realise I have to go out and make a run to the store I'll just go like this as I usually have my children (4m and 2y) with me and if not I'm trying to do the shop as fast as I can to get back to them as my DH is not the best with small children and often gets flustered. I am not choosing to wear them out of laziness, I choose to wear them out of comfort. They are clean, I am clean. Nothing inappropriate is exposed. So I don't understand how it is hurting anybody. I don't think it's fair to sit and judge people who chose to wear pyjamas and be comfortable and I don't understand why people are so offended by this?
I'm sure there are a few people that do wear them because they are lazy and slobbish but I don't think it's fair to judge all people that wear them this way.

^Whitney* I once had some really comfy tracksuit bottoms that were purple . I wore them all the time after having DS to the shops etc. My Mum used to live next to a corner shop and once went to visit with the DCs. Nipped and got her some milk etc and came back. Within those ten minutes. I'd been seen by my Dsis who'd rang my mum asking if everything was okay because she'd just seen Away in her pyjamas Grin

OP I really don't get it. If you are as confident as you say you are why are you so upset about some people disagreeing with you? Yes some comments were uncalled for but there usually is one or two comments like that on most AIBU threads. Why would you just not give a shit and carry on about your daily business in pjyamas or not. It's up to you. Confused

Bluntness100 · 09/01/2017 13:40

I think Capricorn nailed it. The wearer often thinks they look cute, trendy or edgy and most others generally think they look slovenly and lazy. Of course it doesn't mean they are, and everyone has a back story, but as we can see from this thread it's one of those outfits where the people wearing it and the people who see them have very different views.

I don't think there is a class issue here either, in fact if the implication is this is a working class thing then I think that's hugely offensive as the overwhelming majority of people, irrelevant of class , would not dream of going shopping in their pyjamas and feel it's a bit skanky. It's only a very small percentage of the population who feel it's acceptable.

Whatever it is there is always someone who will think it's acceptable, there's a market for everything basically,

paxillin · 09/01/2017 13:43

When people say "I don't care what people think" they mean "people see me as bohemian or eccentric". Most do care if people think they look alcoholic or struggling.

1horatio · 09/01/2017 13:47

Tbh, what we are forgetting is that some people are genuinely struggling. And in these cases we should probably be more compassionate.

That's the issue with this. Now that it's fashionable you don't know wether is a struggling new mother, an elderly person with Alzheimer's...

HorridHenryrule · 09/01/2017 13:48

Bluntness I think you would be surprised at how many people thinks it is acceptable. Mumsnet posters are speaking for themselves not the country. My local co-op will be open from 6am how many people are going to worry about how they look when buying a pint of milk.

MizzEmma · 09/01/2017 13:49

Morning all, I see that this is still going!

Just in case it doesn't get deleted, I feel I have to make this point. Fizz said:

"My point was that that pp was Basically saying you do things like this, you must be lower class, and there is inherently something wrong with being lower class."

This is a gross mischaracterisation of my posts. Nowhere will you find anything I said that equates to "there is inherently something wrong with being lower class."

Fizz I tried my best to be polite to you last night despite your continued rudeness to me because I am aware that you have a very new baby and are sleep deprived but that was extremely unfair and quite, quite nasty.

NoTimetoStopnStare · 09/01/2017 13:49

Does it make a difference if the Pjs are Primarni or Calvin Klein? Grin

CaraAspen · 09/01/2017 13:51

"NoTimetoStopnStare

None whatsoever.

Jokeaboutmyhotchoc · 09/01/2017 13:53

I'll wear my pjs if I want to. I don't give two fucks what anyone thinks about me.

I personally think anyone wearing Boden looks an utter tit but I certainly wouldn't be complaining about them to supermarkets.

Wear whatever you want. Can't think who has so little going on in their lives they find the time to care about shit like this.

Lweji · 09/01/2017 13:54

Fwiw, any trousers with patterns look like pj bottoms to me. Grin
Except maybe jeans and wool based fabrics.

Having said that I don't see why anyone would have pj bottoms just to wear out of bed. You can find comfortable alternatives that are not pjs.

Jokeaboutmyhotchoc · 09/01/2017 13:54

When people say "I don't care what people think" they mean "people see me as bohemian or eccentric"

Can't speak for everyone but I really doubt anyone sees me that way, I'm pretty boring.

NoTimetoStopnStare · 09/01/2017 13:54

None whatsoever. Grin

How about if the trackies/jogging bottoms are 'Lonsdale' versus Pjs that are CK? Bet that's got you stumped...! Wink

FizzBombBathTime · 09/01/2017 13:58

mizz I'm not sleep deprived but thanks for your concern. How patronising.

BastardGoDarkly · 09/01/2017 14:00

Oh Fizz have a break eh? You sound very pissed off!

FizzBombBathTime · 09/01/2017 14:01

Eh? Some one has advance searched me and used my baby to stick the knife in. I'm not concerned about the debate anymore, that poster displayed bad form. Below the belt. (Or pyjama waistband as the case may be?

FizzBombBathTime · 09/01/2017 14:02

bastard if you don't like my posts, look away Smile

bbcessex · 09/01/2017 14:03

It's a similar principle to swimwear. In the same way that pyjama bottoms are essentially casual trousers, Bra and knickers are essentially exactly the same as a bikini but you would be very odd to wear them around or in a public pool.

Just not the done thing.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/01/2017 14:04

There is something I thought I had said earlier on the thread, but reading back, I didn't - whilst holding an opinion in the privacy of your own mind is fine, taking a picture of someone, without their consent, so you can post it online and make fun of them, is NOT.

@mummyof2pr - if you are using the @ symbol so that the person you are name-checking gets notified, you need to use the full username, and make sure you get all the details right - for example, you keep referring to 1horatio as 1horat - she won't get notified that you have directed a comment to her.

A couple more things have come to mind as I have been thinking about this - firstly, in my experience, pyjamas are often made from lighter fabric than clothes designed for normal wear out and about - because they are designed mainly for sleeping in, they don't need to stand up to the same sort of wear and tear that other clothes do, and this may contribute to my opinion that they are not suitable as streetwear.

Secondly, re. bikinis showing far more flesh - it comes down to what the garment is designed for. Bikinis are designed for swimming and sunbathing in, so if you are wearing them on the beach or at the swimming pool, that should be perfectly acceptable, but wearing a bikini to the supermarket would not be. In the same way, pyjamas are designed for wearing in bed, and now for casual wear around the house, so that is normal and nothing to take exception to - but they are not designed as street wear, so I would judge someone wearing pyjamas out and about/in the supermarket.

1horatio · 09/01/2017 14:06

ST

Did you have to mention that? I was kind of glad my inbox wouldn't be swamped ;)

1horatio · 09/01/2017 14:06

SDT oops.

BastardGoDarkly · 09/01/2017 14:07

Pretty sure you mentioned you'd been up with the baby earlier in the thread Fizz

FizzBombBathTime · 09/01/2017 14:08

Never said it is 'a very new baby' though. HTH.

FizzBombBathTime · 09/01/2017 14:09

She couldn't possibly know how old my children are purely from this thread. Confused

FizzBombBathTime · 09/01/2017 14:10

And it's irrelevant. She just didn't like that I disagreed with her. So resorted to nastiness.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 09/01/2017 14:12

Waitrose have made that statement because they know they will never be troubled by the schleppers

^^ Well it had me. 1horatio would have liked to think I looked like an arty creative free spirit but the reality would have been more - steer clear that girl is going to boak. Xmas Hmm

I have never seen it round here but if I did see someone in their pj's I would firstly assume they were very ill, desperate for food - sustenance - tablets whatever and had no one to look after them Xmas Sad or bereaved something like that....
