False Positive? Help!

Morning. Not sure if anyone can help me who may have had a similar experience, but I'm driving myself insane and have to wait until tomorrow to speak with GP.
I tested last week and was negative. I then randomly tested at about 4.30pm on a Tesco digital and there digital reader said positive. I then thought I'd try a clear blue to see how many weeks and to double check the result. This had a not pregnant result. I then tried a first response this morning and only one line, so not pregnant.
Is it likely to get a false positive on the Tesco digital? I know it's only less than 24 hours to wait until I can speak with Drs, but I've been wanting this for a while and I'm driving myself crazy thinking am I, aren't I. Any advice would be amazing right now. Thanks!

How late are you?

I have pcos so my last one was September last year.

To be honest, I wouldn't bother going to the GP. Assuming to are in the UK, they are not going to do anything other than do another (most likely less sensitive) pregnancy test. If it's positive they will tell you to make an appointment with the midwife in a few weeks time. If it's negative, they are likely to just shrug and say you are not pregnant. An on the ball GP might mention the possibility of a chemical pregnancy, but that's it.

Do you have any pregnancy symptoms. Do you know when you last you ovulated or how late you might be?

PS: what are you going to the GP for? If it's to confirm pregnancy, then there's nothing they can do that you won't gain from waiting a week to re-test.

Ok, just seen your last post. How long have you been ttc for (or are you not)?

You need to wait a few days and then test with first morning urine.

I know that's easier said than done though, so if you feel the need to POAS a lot buy some internet cheapies. IME first response are the gold standard.

Thanks for the messages. TTC for over a year now. No idea when last time ovulated due to pcos. Apparently the GP could do a blood test as well as I have no idea if I'm late, ovulating. And took text last week and negative and then one positive and one negative this week. I've got really sore boobs (never experienced anything like it before and have had it since 22nd Dec) and a burnt taste on a few things. Apart from that, I've felt the same. Thanks for your help and advice.

In that case, I would go to the GP, concentrating on the fact you have been ttc for a year, but rarely ovulate. They should be able to do some blood tests and hopefully refer you to a consultant.

My GP did a blood test for me to confirm a pregnancy whilst on contraception, go and explain to them xx

Yeah I'll speak to them tomorrow and see what they suggest. It's not like I can wait until 'I'm late' as the PCOS hasn't given me a regular cycle for 7 years, so hopefully they can do a blood test to tell me for sure. X

When my wife had this (alternating results over a period of nearly a week) it was because of an ectopic pregnancy. (She also had a slight stabbing pain in her side that was coming and going.)

When she mentioned it (and the stabbing pain) in passing to the IVF clinic (that she'd walked to in her lunch-break to clear up an admin matter) they immediately scanned her, then sent her to hospital as an emergency admission.

It was one of the doctors in the hospital who said that fluctuating pregnancy test results were a symptom of ectopic, apparently the body is itself confused about whether it is pregnant, so pregnancy hormones fluctuate.

I have no idea what proportion of the time fluctuating test results are/are not symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy, but give DW was told it could kill here within 24 hours if not urgently treated, it's worth satisfying yourself that you don't have one.

(In fact hospital monitored for two days before finally operating, they planned to remove one tube/ovary, but when it came to it, managed to sort it without doing so. She was in surgery for a couple of hours.)

Sorry, I see you've only had one positive, so I may be worrying you unnecessarily.

DW sequence was something like:
Thursday: pregnanct
Saturday: not pregnanct
Monday: pregnant.

I guess if you've only had one positive it's not the same thing as having two with a negative between them. Obviously I'm not qualified to have an opinion though.

False positives are very very rare and usually caused by one of two things - fertility drugs or a chemical pregnancy.

As you are not on any fertility drugs it is possible you have suffered a chemical pregnancy, i.e. An egg that fertilised but failed to implant properly.

It is also possible that the Tesco test you used is more sensitive than the CBD you used so picked up on a lower level of hormones.

If you can get a Drs appointment tomorrow then you should know soon, though make sure you ask for a blood test as a urine test is likely to be as inconclusive as you've already found as GPs surgerys tend to use the same over the counter tests you can buy yourself.

I have PCOS too and it took me 3 years to conceive with the assistance of a fertility clinic, so I'm crossing everything that this is a true positive for you.
