To feel the rage with my toaster..?

We bought a fairly expensive 4 slice toaster about a year ago and every time I use it it gives my the rage...

Although you would think a device designed solely for toasting BREAD would actually fit a slice of normal sliced bread in it..?!

But no..my Best of Both medium sliced bread comes out with 2cm of flabby white bread at one end...it's as if it thinks bread should be square

The only solution is to try and remember to toast for half the time, flip the bread over then retoast so both ends get some heat exposure. But I often end up with the toast being browner than I would like in the middle (my preference is for a lightly toasted pale brown slice) --or I end up forgetting to eject at the second toasting and end up with a charred mess

Please Mumsnetters help me with recommendations for a fit for purpose sleek looking toaster or I will have resort to sneaking a slice of bread into John Lewis to carry out my own consumer test!

I have a 4 slice toaster and found I had the same trouble as you.

So I put the slices in on their side...

I grill mine now because of this. Fucking hate toasters.

Bin the toaster as your kitchen is tiny & worktop space is precious. Use your grill. Watch morbidly as it fails to toast the bread. Get distracted by something for 4.3 seconds then realise you can smell burning. Swear under your breath as you gingerly pick the flaming hot slice of cinder out, fling it in the sink until it's cool enough not to melt the bin liner. Swear silently for a second time as the world's most sensitive smoke alarm goes off, start flapping at it ineffectually as you are 5'2". Swear again as your DH (6'4") reaches up & turns it off. With his finger. This is me most weekends...

Also just put mine in on their side...... Although my DH hasn't cottoned onto this and I have to hear him lament most mornings about the faff of turning toast

This happens to me every time I have toast. I either get a third of just bread or I end up with nicely cooked ends and a burnt midsection.
Drives me mad. Too lazy to buy a new one.

Cut the bread in half before you toast it

I got tired of turning the bread, so I toasted it normally and cut the un-toasted bit off afterwards.

Not helped by finding that one side of the bread is always browner than the other until the toaster has warmed up, so it needs to be turned round too and once it has actually warmed up the toast gets darker much faster. I have a case for giving up toast.

So are we concluding all toasters have the same problem? Does anyone have a toaster that lets you put in a full slice, top of the loaf uppermost ..resulting in an evenly toasted toast?!?!

PS thanks for the suggestions.. I tried a piece of bread sideways, it's a real squeeze and I fear it might get wedged in...worth a go though!

Could have written this myself. Only yesterday I was threatening to throw it in the bin. Don't even get me started on the crumbs all around it - no matter how carefully I clean it out.

I have a 4 slice Cookworks toaster that can cope with bread, waffles, scotch pancakes.

Dp bought a toaster made by warburtons because they discovered that their bread was too big to fit in regular toasters. Toaster is a huge piece of mechanical ugliness. Takes four slices. If you only want to toast two slices then one side of one of the pieces of toast stays all white and flaccid unless, like other posters have suggested, you remember to tinker with the bread throughout the toasting process (which surely contradicts the point of having a toaster in the first place?)

I spent 3 months on hospital with DS2. Toaster was Dualit & really crap.

Some company could really cash in on this by making the gap 1-2 inches wider!

In hospital. Dualit still rubbish. It did only toast one side at a time.

I have a general issue with toast. If you put something on it as soon as it comes out of the toaster it goes soggy. If you wait it goes cold. I tend to take it out, waft it around a bit then put it back in. I find toast more trouble than it's worth.

Our old cook works was fab....it stopped working and I brought a cheap Tesco one...then realised how often we have toast....going it dies soon and will go back to cook works

Aggghhh! I feel the pain - I use a toaster to do pita bread - they all come out like charcoal as they must be turned to ensure the whole thing is toasted - charred in the middle uncooked at each end. My DH says it's operator error... I shall show him this post!!!

I have a Magimix two slice toaster, if I need four slices I put two slices in each slot, face to face, toast them then swap them and toast again so all four slices are ready and hot at the same time. Plenty of room to lie large slices sideways.

I want to know why, even with the top end toasters, they aren't big enough to toast a very standard size of bread? There's always a 1.5 inch bit at the top that's still bread at the end I know you can stop half way through and turn the other way but I like mine lightly toasted and this always overdoes it

Because they all assume we buy the cheap square "white sliced" crap that seems to pass for bread these days.

I hate this too, I always buy a 4 slice toaster but with the 2 slots (in theory should get 2 slices in each slot) then use it for just 2 complete slices. The variety available is much less but you end up with proper toast so it's worth it!

This is why I buy a long slot toaster. It means that you can either toast 4 square slices at once or 2 normal slices of bread. Because it is that bit longer, you can even toast pita bread in it.

I have no idea why the toaster arrangement of llll even exists as it will never cook 4 normal slices of bread at once.
