To feel the rage with my toaster..?

purpleshortcake · 07/01/2017 19:10

We bought a fairly expensive 4 slice toaster about a year ago and every time I use it it gives my the rage...

Although you would think a device designed solely for toasting BREAD would actually fit a slice of normal sliced bread in it..?!

But no..my Best of Both medium sliced bread comes out with 2cm of flabby white bread at one end...it's as if it thinks bread should be square Confused

The only solution is to try and remember to toast for half the time, flip the bread over then retoast so both ends get some heat exposure. But I often end up with the toast being browner than I would like in the middle (my preference is for a lightly toasted pale brown slice) --or I end up forgetting to eject at the second toasting and end up with a charred mess

Please Mumsnetters help me with recommendations for a fit for purpose sleek looking toaster or I will have resort to sneaking a slice of bread into John Lewis to carry out my own consumer test!

Hello. This thread is a little old now and some of the recommendations may be out of date. Take a look at our round-up of the best toasters - according to Mumsnetters - for more up-to-date suggestions. MNHQ.

I had a crappy cheap n nasty 2 slice job that had this problem.

For Christmas I bought myself a Morphy Richards accents 4 slice one. Fits the THE WHOLE SLICE IN. Naicely toasted bread first time, every time.

The only issue so far is that the eject is quite strong, so I've ended up with toast flying out and laying undiscovered for a few minutes because I wasn't watching.

myoriginal3 · 08/01/2017 11:20

I recall either a comedy sketch or maybe a thread on here where Angela Merkel was blamed for the demise of simple toast. Apparently European bread is smaller Grin

BabychamSocialist · 08/01/2017 14:40

I fucking hate our 4 slice toaster. Anything that isn't exactly uniform and perfect shaped it just refuses to toast.

I do most under the grill now because we're quite fond of farmhouse bread and the toaster just refuses to allow that to happen.

Same here hate doing toast and having to turn it round thought it was just mine cos it's a cheap one

catkind · 08/01/2017 15:35

Hooray! Solidarity! We have this, I thought we'd managed to buy some weird dud brand of toaster. They won't fit in sideways in ours either.

I had a toaster when I was a student that was a two slice one but with the two slices fitting end to end rather than side to side. Cheapo from boots. Worked brilliantly for about 15 years and it fitted in two whole slices properly. Ditched it as the plastic was cracked and I wanted a nice new shiny one, I've regretted it ever since. Unfortunately it was a boots own brand cheapo one and they no longer do them so I can't buy another the same.

I have the Breville two slice one designed to fit Warburtons bread. It's good. You can lift the toast up to check it without cancelling the cycle.

purpleshortcake · 08/01/2017 18:58

Thanks all...looks like I'm not alone! Euphemia I like the look of that Delonghi..it definitely evenly toasts a normal slice (eg Best of Both medium ) without having to put the slices in sideways...? If yes that's awesome!

Spermy I'm gutted about Dualit. We quite fancied one as we've redone our kitchen and thought they looked quite swanky. No point if they make rubbish toast though Sad

blueskyinmarch · 08/01/2017 19:02

I put mine in sideways too.

BabychamSocialist · 08/01/2017 19:03

Dualit is shite. They are toasters for people who only ever look at their toaster and don't use it.

TentUpFirstBunkUpLater · 08/01/2017 19:04

I have a long slice toaster for this exact reason

I toast two at a time - on their side

ClaireLumia · 08/01/2017 20:03

What about one of these?

(It's the toaster from red dwarf. Very funny!)

YelloDraw · 08/01/2017 20:26

This toaster is the best 4 slicer.

No issues with some bit of bread not getting toasted. Fits bagels and crumpets.

Love it.

YelloDraw · 08/01/2017 20:26

@Euphemia we have good toaster taste!

Bringmewineandcake · 08/01/2017 20:36

We just bought this www.amazon.co.uk/Breville-2-Slice-Toaster-Perfect-Warburtons/dp/B00TPM40JQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=kitchen-appliances&ie=UTF8&qid=1483907713&sr=1-3&keywords=Breville+toaster for PiL - long enough for warburtons bread and wide enough for crumpets.

Jumpmom1 · 09/01/2017 15:08

Turn it on its side.....

DarkAngel1984 · 09/01/2017 15:11

Have you tried turning ur bread on it's side if it will fit in that way. I always do my toast like this no problems

IWantATardis · 09/01/2017 15:18

My solution is to buy the half loaves of sliced bread - so a 400g loaf rather than a standard 800g loaf.

The actual slices of bread in the 400g loaves are a bit smaller so generally fit nicely in a standard toaster.

blueamberuk · 09/01/2017 15:26

I had problems galore finding a new toaster then i saw a review somewhere that said the basic cheap one from Asda was superb as all bread fitted in so I thought I would buy one to tied me over till I could find a better one. I have not even think of replacing as its brilliant - nice even toast both sides and long slots its perfect. I can be a bit of a brand snob sometimes but I have thought why replace when this does the job better than my pricy broken Bosch one ever did direct.asda.com/George-Home-2-Slice-Toaster-With-Long-Slots---Various-Colours/GH2SliceToasterLongSlotsMASTER,default,pd.html

HoneyBeeMum1 · 09/01/2017 15:31

I recently bought a Morphy Richards toaster from Morrisons.

They are available in several different colours - I bought a lovely metallic red one. Sensible sized slots and perfect toast...

Sundance01 · 09/01/2017 15:31

I have one of those toasters that puts a logo (of football team) in the middles - toast pre sliced bread brilliantly.......and nothing else. Cannot fit in crumpets or anything else whatsoever.

cosytoaster · 09/01/2017 15:32

I've hot the Breville - it's fab - fits the bread in and toasts really well

previously1474907171 · 09/01/2017 15:39

The old Dualit toasters were good, they were changed some years ago to the newer type, and there have been reviews ever since saying how bad they are now. I know this because I wanted one and found that people had wasted money on them and that the old ones had become unavailable.

Re: the soggy toast issue once you spread something on it, less likely to happen with real butter (if you can find it) but if you look at the ingredients in bread you will see that not only does it contain GM modified soya flour but also palm oil and palm oil will make anything soggy and gloopy (Cadburys chocolate being an example).

I have been unable to find bread that doesn't contain this rubbish so have dug out my old breadmaker which also allows me to choose the size of loaf I want and am planning to make use of it again, because I can use butter instead of palm oil, and proper flour with no GM additives as cheap fillers.
