To feel the rage with my toaster..?

purpleshortcake · 07/01/2017 19:10

We bought a fairly expensive 4 slice toaster about a year ago and every time I use it it gives my the rage...

Although you would think a device designed solely for toasting BREAD would actually fit a slice of normal sliced bread in it..?!

But no..my Best of Both medium sliced bread comes out with 2cm of flabby white bread at one end...it's as if it thinks bread should be square Confused

The only solution is to try and remember to toast for half the time, flip the bread over then retoast so both ends get some heat exposure. But I often end up with the toast being browner than I would like in the middle (my preference is for a lightly toasted pale brown slice) --or I end up forgetting to eject at the second toasting and end up with a charred mess

Please Mumsnetters help me with recommendations for a fit for purpose sleek looking toaster or I will have resort to sneaking a slice of bread into John Lewis to carry out my own consumer test!

Hello. This thread is a little old now and some of the recommendations may be out of date. Take a look at our round-up of the best toasters - according to Mumsnetters - for more up-to-date suggestions. MNHQ.

All toasters are shit and don't keep the bread warm enough to butter once you've singed your hands/electrocuted yourself getting the toast out. Then you have to turn on the ruddy grill that you should have used it the first place.

Luckily I am not excessively fond of toast.

wasonthelist · 09/01/2017 15:42

If you put something on it as soon as it comes out of the toaster it goes soggy.

That's the best thing! That's like complaining about cereals going soggy - soggy is good.

Scottishchick39 · 09/01/2017 15:43

I put my bread in sideways and it comes out fine, I do have rage against my deep fill sandwich toaster though as there is no bread for sale any where which is wide enough. The cheese pours at the side as it's not sealed. I hate it!

wasonthelist · 09/01/2017 15:45

A while back I thought I should do a James Dyson on toasters - for example, I am sure you could use mircrwave tech in them. This thread (sort of) proves it - but how many people would pay a premium for a good toaster?

OverScentedFanjo · 09/01/2017 15:47

You need an AGA and a toast thing. It's like a wire tennis racquet and you pop your bread in and place on the hot metal, close the lid and have perfect toast.

I don't have an AGA but my parents do and it makes the best toast ever.

shovetheholly · 09/01/2017 15:47

Another one who uses the oven grill. It honestly makes better-tasting toast. Promise!

MusicToMyEars800 · 09/01/2017 15:48

i have a 2 slice cookworks toaster, I've had it for 5 years never had any problems with it, I put the bread in sideways and it toasts perfectly on the setting number 4. It can take all bread, I am currently using Tesco own brand toastie bread which s large and quite thick. only paid £9.99 for my toaster too Smile

wasonthelist from the amount of people lamenting the demise of the old Dualit I would think quite a lot, if it worked like the old ones did.

You would also need to produce the old style bread that toasted properly though. The new, soggy bread has evolved since about 2006 or thereabouts, first the soya flour an then more recently the palm oil. Waitrose bread had neither at one time and was the only one I could find, but even that has gone to pot now.

PigletJohn · 09/01/2017 15:51

spermy

It did only toast one side at a time.

then unless someone had turned the one-side-only switch (it does have one) it had a faulty element and needed repair. Which in the Dualit is designed to be (a) possible (b) fairly easy.

wasonthelist · 09/01/2017 15:53

I like soggy bread.

I have an ancient Dualit toaster that I am not all that thrilled with - it's the older heavy-duty type, but its toasting is nothing special. It just seems we are overdue a toast-tech revolution like we got with vacuum cleaners from Dyson.

ivykaty44 · 09/01/2017 15:56

I make my bread using a Panasonic bread machine and a sainsbury toaster is the correct size for a small loaf slice

WonderMike · 09/01/2017 15:57

we are overdue a toast-tech revolution Yes. This. I want one that does loads of slices at a time, like an industrial conveyor one, and that is consistent grilling-wise, but still flexible with size/thickness. And one I don't have to jam a knife into to get hot cross buns out of.

ZippyNeedsFeeding · 09/01/2017 15:58

I have a 6 slice Dualit toaster and I love it. I think it's intended for commercial use, which is just as well. I've had it for 5 years and had no problems with it. Bread fits in with no problems and it toast perfectly. Previously we killed a toaster about every 6 months!

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 09/01/2017 16:02

I had a stupidly expensive de longhi one and it stopped working less than 2 months later. Was gutted as I'd used the last club card boost to buy it. Angry it did just fit in the toast if you put it on its side but with the middle of a Warburton loaf it was tight and the bread bent a bit. Have a dualit now a d it does make lovely toast but it's the same problem the bread sticks out and it can be a squeeze to get it in on its side. Kingsmill fits but Warburtons mostly doesn't.
I did look at the Warburtons toaster but the reviews weren't great. A lot of people said that if you were only toasting two slices the one next to the empty slots didn't toast and even with it turned up high after a few months it just produced warm bread.

ivykaty44 · 09/01/2017 16:04

I had a de longi and half stopped working after about 8 months. I got it at half price but now I know why!

dollydee · 09/01/2017 16:07

I have the asda George 2 slice toaster mentioned earlier and it's one of the best toasters, ever. Toasts the full slice, no matter how thick. Bargain at £8 in the sale. In black, silver or white.

HeirOfNothingInParticular · 09/01/2017 16:08

I've had three Dualit's and they have all been rubbish, I should have learnt my lesson by now. The one I have at the moment is the worst, and toasts the tiniest slices of bread. I have to faff about turn them over mid-way. Serves me right, style over substance. IME their kettles are rubbish too.

Katemustsew · 09/01/2017 16:17

Is there any toaster that adjusts the toasting time to keep the toast consistent in shade , even if you use the toaster several times in a row?
I seem to remember a big brother contestant a long time ago saying he wanted a contract with an electricals company because he had cracked the problem of toast getting browner with each consecutive use! ( or was that just a really vivid dream ?) where is that toaster? What happened?
I hate having to turn the toaster down ,it's so annoying and hit and miss.

GreyHare · 09/01/2017 16:19

I have the 2 slice Warburton toaster because I found the same problem, even though I hate warburtons bread with a passion it still toast my Hovis White Thick Slice from top to bottom, it's not perfect and has taken a while to get it on the perfect setting but it does ok.

VeritysWatchTower · 09/01/2017 16:23

Right, I don't want to use my grill because I don't want to have to keep bending down to see if the bread is toasted. Also my children make toast and I like a toaster.

I have a morphy richards that I turn my bread sideways with, depending on the loaf I buy I sometimes have to squish it in. It now has one element that doesn't work so I am after a new toaster.

If anyone is saying that their toaster fits a full sized slice of bread can we be specific? Grin

ie I have X toaster and I buy Y bread. Would anyone be willing to post photographic evidence of this? Wink plenty of sporners uploading photos of spots, where are all the die hard toaster people?

GrouchyKiwi · 09/01/2017 16:23

We have the vintage-style Delonghi linked above and it nearly fits a Warburtons Farmhouse slice on its side. The slices don't get stuck but they do bend a bit and if you like super crispy toast they break when you butter them.

GrouchyKiwi · 09/01/2017 16:26

Oh, and we haven't paid for our last two toasters as we got them from John Lewis, which has a 2-year guarantee for electricals. Our previous toasters both broke before the two years were up. This one has been going for longer than that now, I think.

Notso · 09/01/2017 16:29

I love my ancient dualit.

PigletJohn · 09/01/2017 16:33

1926

Automatic, has a timer, toast can't burn, what more could anyone want?
