To not shower every day

AngryGinger · 07/01/2017 11:18

To make it clear, I do have a wash every day but I don't see the need to actually shower or bathe every single morning. was talking to people at work about it, most of the women seemed to agree with me whilst the men thought it was weird that we didn't have a whose presence every single morning. Aibu to be washed but not showered every day?

bitter I can barely understand your posts to be honest so I'm not sure of your point

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/01/2017 18:17

Nobody is a completely reliable source bitter

DameDoom · 08/01/2017 18:24

Personally, I have to shower twice a day otherwise I'd stink. I hate the thought of going about my day coated in a film of sleep sweat and dead skin cells.
A woman who I work with doesn't need to shower more than three times a week as she doesn't smell and never sweats (according to her). The rest of us disagree - it's revolting to get wafts of her unwashed minge in unwashed polyester trousers.
Feeling clean and fresh is one of life's simple but great pleasures.

eurochick · 08/01/2017 18:27

I have to shower every morning and again if I work out, or I feel rank. From my time on public transport, it is clear not everyone feels the same.

P1nkP0ppy · 08/01/2017 18:30

As you get used to your own body scent (smell) apparently then how do you judge how whiffy you are? Presumably it's in the 'rank' category before you notice it 😷
I bathe every evening, wear clean nightclothes every other night and rarely shower because I hate showers unless I've got dirty and sweaty gardening or something. I do wash every morning.
As I sleep alone bliss! I don't share body cells or anything elsewhere!

adiposegirl2 · 08/01/2017 19:03

Yuck!

Is this thread a wind up? Or do you all inhabit an alternate universe? 2 min showers??? Not washing complete body partsShock

Women- you have periods, fanjo secretions, dead skin cells and have sex- to name a few.

You all may not be able to smell yourselves but the rest of us do.

pollymere · 08/01/2017 19:03

I shower every other day or every 36 hours and wash my hair 2 of 3 times a week. I think it depends on how much you sweat/smell tbh.

asifti · 08/01/2017 19:07

I need a shower everyday... it is as though I can't wake up til I've showered :)

Notmuchtosay1 · 08/01/2017 19:07

Am I the only one that showers at bedtime? My other half is a farmer so I wouldn't get in bed with him at night if he didn't shower. He stinks of cows and silage. I shower as well. I'd worry I smell!
As a child I was only allowed a bath on a Sunday. The immersion heater went on on a Sunday. Then I only got a few inches of hot water. The rest of the week it was a cold water wash. (Don't think I bothered very often!) I'm sure we weren't in the minority with one bath a week in the 1970's.

Mrsglitterfairy · 08/01/2017 19:12

I don't shower every day, especially not in winter. I sit at a desk in a bloody freezing cold office all day at work, drive to and from so don't ever really get sweaty. Obv in summer, or when I have been exercising I do but I honestly don't see the need. I wash every day, wear deodorant and clean clothes.

Tapandgo · 08/01/2017 19:15

Cant imagine not showering every morning - it a great way to get fully awake and fresh. A quick shower must take as long as a quick wash surely?

Angelil · 08/01/2017 19:17

You don't need to overly clean your genitalia though. It mostly sorts itself out (like a self-cleaning oven - just needs a wipe round every now and again!). You don't want to get rid of all the good bacteria too.

brasty · 08/01/2017 19:18

Had 2 showers today, within an hour of each other. No I am not a clean freak, but I hadn't reckoned with being peed on by a 4 year old either.

PurpleTraitor · 08/01/2017 19:21

I didn't have a shower in my house until I was 28 years old (and by that point I'd been on mumsnet for five years) so you can only imagine my bemusement at the shower police on this website.

According to them I wasn't ever truly clean for 28 years of my life and clearly walked around in a cloud of filth.

Sparrowlegs248 · 08/01/2017 19:25

We don't have a shower in our house, there is nowhere to put one. Old house, I used to shower twice a day. Morning and night. Morning before work and night after exercise or riding horse etc.

Now I have to bath and probably manage about twice a week tbh. I don't smell, I know this! I wash twice a day at the sink, face, armpits, fanjo area. Feet at night. I am 36 weeks preggers and struggling with the bath at the best of times.

Washing at the sink is not hard or unhygienic. Wash hands. Run water, wash and rinse face. Get product of choice, lather up hands and wash pits etc, use clean flannel to 'rinse' off. Use second sink.of clean water for final 'rinse'. Feet are done in Bath.

Before ds and then this pregnancy(which followed ds quickly) I bathed every night.

Daydream007 · 08/01/2017 19:50

I guess if you wash your main bits well then that's OK.

reallyanotherone · 08/01/2017 20:07

Agree- back in the dark ages when i was a child no one had showers, unless you counted the rubber hose thing that attached to the bath taps. Bath night was sunday.

I don't recall people smelling back then. In fact people smell more now, i can often smell their washing powder, perfume etc a mile away. Which to me is almost as bad as b.o, it makes me sneeze and my eyes run.

bitteroulbag · 08/01/2017 20:22

livia I am an eco warrior who does research & believes in science. No car. Small family. Only organic as far as possible, as few toxic products as possible. I'm assuming the electricity comment was in jest. Everyone does what they can. I'm so sorry if that was unclear. OP, don't be intimidated by the squeaky clean police. Wash your hands frequently and avoid anti-bacterial products at all costs.

bitteroulbag · 08/01/2017 20:26

really you are spot on. This obsession with "cleanliness" is very scary. Just look at the chemicals that are going into the water table...

falange · 08/01/2017 20:39

I shower everyday. If I don't I stink. I've slept in a few times and just had a wash before work but I felt really minging.

falange · 08/01/2017 20:44

In the 70's we had 2 baths a week. In the 80's I had a wash every weekday and washed my hair in cold water over the bath every day. If for some reason I couldn't wash it and had to wait a day or too the water would be really mucky when I was rinsing. I don't think people realise how dirty hair gets.

ElspethFlashman · 08/01/2017 20:46

adipose on a previous thread I was roundly chided for suggesting that a splash of water wasn't sufficient for a fanjo.

treaclesoda · 08/01/2017 20:51

I've been waiting for a showering thread to raise its head because I recently read a fascinating book.

The author was trying out various ways of life from Tudor times. She didn't wash with water for months and no one noticed. Her colleagues knew she was doing it and were reporting back on smells and none of them could smell her either. The key to it was the natural fibres. She only wore natural fibres next to her skin, and she scrubbed her skin with dry linen daily. Then put on fresh 16th century underwear every day. No smells. However, her colleague did the opposite - 21st century washing habits, daily showers etc, but washed his 16th century clothes only rarely. The result was that he smelt terrible within a couple of days.

So there you go. It's the clothes that are the problem, not the skin.

Mind you, I don't fancy trying it out myself Grin

MissVictoria · 08/01/2017 20:55

I've spent the last 4 years with an OCD flare up meaning every time i went to the toilet (even for a wee) i had to have a shower including washing my hair, and because of how strictly ritualised the way i shower is, it takes 30-45 minutes. I couldn't re use towels or put clothes back on i'd already worn so i was going through complete set of clean clothes and 2 bath towels every time too. I managed to break the cycle in September, and i always use those wet toilet wipes too so now i don't have to exhaust myself with showering multiple times a day, i'm kind of still enjoying the novelty and typically go every other day atm. My skin was wrecked as i often had to scrub myself with neat bleach too, i'm sure it's enjoying the break.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/01/2017 21:09

An eco warrior? Oh well you should have said save me the bother of reading your posts

You might be happy to shower once a week but I would rather not stink
