Aibu to take my toddler to the doctor AGAIN about blood in nappy

I have been three times each time they say her tummy feels soft and give us lactulose .

Today she had blood on her nappy with her poo again it looks more IN the poo rather than from A cut?

We can't see a cut BUT she does seem like she is in pain passing them .

The doctor acts as though I'm totally overreacting but I feel like it's not normal have so much bleeding!

It's blood streaks throughout the poo. BUT not every time.

I would insist on a referral to a paediatrician too.

It does sound like constipation and too much straining. Fruit and veg, whole grain foods no white bread, if it continues with a well balanced diet I would go back

If I remember correctly (someone more qualified will probably be along soon and provide better info) red blood in poo means the blood comes from lower down in the route I.e near the anus. So it would probably mean either a cut that is right at the bum hole that you might not see or even slightly inside.

I'm not a doctor so can't comment on whether this is normal or not. Can you request to see a different doctor at the surgery? What does the doctor think it is? Hope your DD is ok

Lady - we have been trying giving extra fruit and veg plus the lactulose , this has been going on probably 7 months or so now. It's just sad to see her in pain !

My baby is constipated often and it really hurts her to poo! We do lactulose twice a day then yellow metanium if she has a tear. We've Also needed antibiotics and dactacort cream.

Make sure she's drinking PLENTY of water keep offering it over and over. It's the c only thing that will really help. And the lactulose to keep it soft

Obviously lactulose twice a day when she's having an issue not every day!

I would go back to the GP over blood in stool. If he seems unconcerned, you could ask what stampings you should look out for that would indicate a need for further investigation.

As a pp said bright red blood is fresh so likely from near the anus, dark red/black blood is from further in. - I'm not a doctor but my son had blood in his poo when he was a couple of months and the paediatrician told us the above. He WAS constipated at those times, he had reflux and wasn't keeping much down.

Please go back to your doctor, get a second opinion or a referral to a paediatrician.

I was told by my GP that it's likely to be a small tear just inside if it's bright red blood, usually from straining. Anything else and it would be dark blood which is old.

Ds 10mo has blood streaked poo when he eats oats & cucumber as he is allergic. He also has dairy, soya and egg allergies that are very severe and these were initially picked up with blood in poo being one of the signs when it was being passed to him via breastmilk.

Bright red blood is likely an anal fissure which can be painful but not serious. Bright red isn't something to worry about. Black clots or streaks in the stool would indicate a prob further up the gut and would need urgent investigation.

Does sound like constipation have you tried paediatric Movicol? Much more effective than lactulose and a good idea to get it sorted ASAP can lead to problems long term (withholding and even worse constipation).

Hi there - I saw your thread and was so keen to reply to you that I even went through a password reset to enable me to log in and post a response! I really wanted to say, please make sure you go back to the GP, and don't be fobbed off.

I had the same experience with my toddler, it went on for months. I was backwards and forwards to the GP and felt like I wasn't being taken seriously at all. Like you, I also thought that the blood was 'in' the poo rather than outside (indicating something more than just too much straining).

I would suggest that you take photos of all blood episodes and don't be afraid to show them to the doctor. In the end we were referred to a paed consultant, who seemed to think that it was diet/allergy related. My poor little boy ended up at one point being dairy free, gluten free, soya free and was actually starting to lose weight. The blood continued to appear most days. Until one day, he passed an enourmous blood clot (no poo, just massive blood clot) and I called an ambulance. In A&E, he did the same thing again and he was admitted to hospital. I've never been so scared, we were all thinking the worst - he was tested/scanned for everything. But at least we were taken seriously, finally!

In the end, a simple stool test result came back after about 5 days, and it revealed he had salmonella! He has since made a full recovery, but I would never wish our experience on anyone.

Perhaps ask to rule out salmonella? (That is certainly a better test than being injected with radioactive dye like my little boy ended up with...). At the very least, the GP needs to refer you to a consultant. This has been going on too long for you already.
