sitting no you get to be a Fairy!

FreckledLeopard · 06/01/2017 16:52

My best friend has her own teepee company and makes beautiful teepees. I can vouch for her totally - she has many satisfied customers.

Her company is 'When Lulu met Weasel' and the website is here: www.teepeesbyluluandweasel.co.uk/shop/. She also has a facebook page (search for the company name and it'll come up).

buzzmoon · 06/01/2017 16:57

I made one for my nieces for Christmas. Best thing I've ever made :) would absolutely love to start a business but don't have the balls!

To ask for advice on buying a teepee?
SittingAround1 · 06/01/2017 16:57

I get to keep ALL my earnings & be a business fairy. Sounds great. Product looks amazing as well.
Do you get media training? Like how to get all your friends on Facebook to buy one?
I reckon they'd be really enthusiastic.

Manumission · 06/01/2017 16:59

loveandsmiles youncould set up a fairy campsite in your back garden maybe?

MrsVioletBottom · 06/01/2017 17:04

Buzzmoon did you use the Simplicity pattern or the Butterick pattern or your own pattern to make this beautiful tepee?

buzzmoon · 06/01/2017 17:05

Violet, I made my own pattern, just based on the height/width of the poles that I had cut :)

buzzmoon · 06/01/2017 17:07

I also wasn't sure if I were to make them to sell, if the market is already saturated? They seem to vary so much in price too I wouldn't know where to start!

loveandsmiles · 06/01/2017 17:20

manu and charge people to come and play!!Grin ~ great idea

merrymouse · 06/01/2017 17:28

Buzzmoon, I think many people find that it's difficult to turn a craft hobby into a business.

  1. To make money you have to mass produce - you might like making one teepee, but do you really want to make 1000?

  2. It's difficult for one person to make 1000 teepees. Realistically you would have to outsource, which brings you to point 3)

  3. When you make something as a hobby the cost is your supplies. You don't have to account for time because you are making the product for fun and it usually isn't the end of the world if you don't meet a deadline. However, if you need to supply an income for yourself or somebody else, time costs money. You may find that it isn't possible to make your product economically.

  4. If you make 1000 teepees, you have overheads like storage and insurance, and you have to manage the supply chain. This all eats into your costs.

I suspect this is why some companies struggle and end up with loads of bad reviews on Facebook. You need to ask yourself why would somebody buy from me rather than John Lewis or Argos?

However, that teepee is beautiful!

Manumission · 06/01/2017 17:29

Ah that sounds rather lovely actually Smile

Merrymouse, you're so right and I don't think I'd ever have the guts to give up a secure job to do it! Like you say, as fun as it is to make one, the novelty would soon wear off when you have a mortgage to pay.

merrymouse · 06/01/2017 17:38

This all eats into your costs profits!

Sadik · 06/01/2017 17:42

"Just a bit sadik. But I'm suddenly craving a tiny big top"

Surely that would be a little top . . .?

I think you should scale up your ambitions - maybe something like this in your back garden?

BBCNewsRave · 06/01/2017 17:45

That's lovely, buzz!
I wouldn't be surprised if you get some enquiries from parents of your nieces' friends.

However people often seem to expect homemade to be cheap and don't consider the time it takes...
Meh. Come the apocolypse they'll all be wanting to share our tipis, handmade clothes etc... Wink

paxillin · 06/01/2017 17:50
Grin

I used to make one as a kid: broom, mop, curtain rail, bed sheet.

Manumission · 10/01/2017 13:04

I'm being stalked by teepees following this thread. Worse than the penguin bollard episode Grin

OP posts:
Manumission · 10/01/2017 13:09

Or is it properly 'tipis'?

The other thread has gone so I can't ask the ex-fairy.

OP posts:
paxillin · 10/01/2017 13:09

Well, following an anonymous tepee producers libel threads against another poster, this is the go-to thread for all things playtent-y now.

Manumission · 10/01/2017 13:14

Yes. Let's just chat entirely innocently about tents and we'll be fine Smile

I have actually bought and stashed two different ones for next year's Christmas presents off the back of this thread. I've never done anything so organised in my life before.

And it turns out there's absolutely no need to spend more than £50 on one.

OP posts:
Manumission · 10/01/2017 13:15

Less if you go the broom route Smile

OP posts:
paxillin · 10/01/2017 13:20

Can't wrap an old broom and a sheet for Christmas though.

loveandsmiles · 10/01/2017 13:21

Threatened with legal action ~ I had to get the thread deletedSad. Everything I said was completely true backed up with paperwork ~ whatever happened to FREE speech. At a loss as what to do now to prevent others joining this 'business' as I can't leave a review on any JFTP social media site.

Manumission · 10/01/2017 13:22

Fair dos love.

We seem to have morphed into a bargain teepee enthusiasts club anyway Wink

Manumission · 10/01/2017 13:25

I bought this one ( you'll like it love -revoltingly pink Wink ) and the more traditional one up thread from NOTHS for her older sister;
