I know iabu so it's just a rant really.
It's great that people decide to get fit but I'm struggling to get into classes that I've been going to for over a year and its mobbed sane as last January.
I know it will all die down again by February. The gym booking system crashed today because there was so many people trying to access it!
Good luck to anyone starting a new e revise plan, I hope you manage to stick to it Halo

I have 2 labradors AND go to the gym. Am I a friendly dog owner or an obnoxious gym bunny? Wink

ColaSpangles · 03/01/2017 23:27

Good for you mistressmolecules, don't be daunted by anything

I've been a bit daunted by your thread, OP, lighthearted tho it may be Blush. I have had gym membership for a couple of years and went several times a week until my disability kicked in for a while. I'm really self conscious so wasn't planning to go back till spring so as not to be the Jan newbie Sad

I also walk on the treadmill as my (invisible) disability makes running difficult. But walking uphill at max (15 in my gym) at good speed takes more breath than monotonous jogging, IME. I just like to enjoy what I do, so I mainly do pilate moves on those buzzing machines (not those Wink). Anyway my challenge is dry January and walking 30 mins a day till I'm ready to face my self consciousness at the gym again.

QueenMortificado · 03/01/2017 23:31

Walking is much better for you on the treadmill than jogging at a steady pace anyway. Walking on an incline or interval training are the best things to do on a treadmill.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/01/2017 23:42

My gym was packed tonight but fortunately nobody was on my treadmill only half joking though in fairness I feel pretty territorial about it all year round.

Joking aside I like it when the gym is busy and buzzy and it's nice to see some new faces. But I can imagine it's annoying if you can't get into s class.

Adnerb95 · 04/01/2017 07:40

RJ some of us need low- impact walking due to knackered knees. Just sayin '.

BitOutOfPractice · 04/01/2017 07:44

I also alternate treadmill running and walking due to knackered knees. It's fairly brisk and on an incline and tbh I don't really care if anyone objects to that.

TheNaze73 · 04/01/2017 07:44

YANBU, they do my head in. All the gear, no idea & will not be in the gym & at the classes come week 3 of January.

On the plus side, they subsidise the hardcore elite into paying less feed, with their 11 months of inactivity, so every cloud....

2017watchoutherewecome · 04/01/2017 08:30

Our gym is lovely, people respect each other and I've never been judged (or I haven't noticed if I am), I'm in my 50s and fat and flabby and don't care what anybody thinks; I've toned up massively and will keep doing so. I'll be helping the newbies when I go tonight, after all people helped me when I started a year ago.

FindoGask · 04/01/2017 08:43

I like the gym when it's a bit busier, has a bit more atmosphere. I do have a particular window I need to fit in everything, so it can hold me back, for example, if there's no squat rack free when usually they're all free. However I have the sense to know it's not All About Me, so during particularly busy periods I make sure I get there a bit earlier rather than getting annoyed with people.

NathanBarleyrocks · 04/01/2017 08:48

YABU. As a previous poster said, the pubs were clogged up with 'once a year' drinkers in December. At least I do my bit & go to the pub every night throughout the year. liver stats only slightly elevated

Bluntness100 · 04/01/2017 09:05

I'd be surprised if anyone joins a gym and then stops going for no other reason than they feel judged by regulars.

Lots of strange comments on this thread.

Like why not walk to the gym? Ehrm, because it's five miles away, not Safe in the dark and it's friggen freezing?
Why not just get a dog? Ehrm because some of us work, or don't have the space or a dog and unless uour lifting the dog and it's a Great Dane then you're not gettting the same exercise benefits or working all your muscles
Why not just ride up a hill? Because I prefer using a gym bike and it's part of a wider exercise program. I don't just ride a bike.
Don't walk on the treadmill, why the fuck not? Is there a rule on how fast you have to go that gyms are forgetting to tell people.

Tashface · 04/01/2017 09:12

I joined a gym/leisure club a couple of weeks ago and went for a swim last week. I was looking forward to having a go in the spa (never been in one!) but I wasn't able to, because it was at maximum capacity (6) with a group of loud, guffawing men. Now I don't have a problem with either men or their right to guffaw, but right next to the spa there is a notice which asks members to spend no longer than 15 minutes in the spa. It also clearly states that the maximum capacity is six people. The men were in for at least the amount of time I was in the main pool (45 minutes) and were not showing any signs of moving when I left to get changed. Very selfish, I felt. The lifeguard should have jogged them along as well, but he seemed too busy staring into space to even notice. Actually, this has made me realise that I'll probably have to mention it to reception next time I go in.

BitOutOfPractice · 04/01/2017 09:16

I hope the PP who scoffed at people walking on the treadmills is still reading!

Olddear · 04/01/2017 09:23

I walk on the treadmill due to hip surgery (twice) why did no-one tell I wasn't allowed??

ShutTheFuckUpBarbara · 04/01/2017 09:33

Bluntness100
Very well said! The comments like "why not walk /run to the gym", in my experience, tend to come from people whose sole exercise is lifting the Sky remote

Sirzy · 04/01/2017 09:37

I do sometimes run to the gym. Depends what I am doing when I there today. Today I have a spin class and a core class so will be quite happy to get into my car to drive back! Running also adds an extra hour to my time out the house so that also limits when I can do that!

As for the "all the gear no idea" type comments - you have all been experts of every area of fitness forever then? Never been new at anything?

ShutTheFuckUpBarbara · 04/01/2017 09:41

sirzy I know people who like you, sometimes run to the gym as part of their training (DH does).

What I mean is that I have several times been scoffed at for driving to the gym, by people who are grossly unfit and have no interest in exercise or nutrition, yet think they can look down at me because I lift but I don't run.

Marynary · 04/01/2017 09:42

YANBU. I use the swimming pool rather than the gym but at this time of year it is always packed. It wouldn't be so bad if those people were paying for a gym subscription but I think that at the gym I use most of extra people are just doing it on a trial basis and not paying anything.

BitOutOfPractice · 04/01/2017 09:42

I was on the treadmill next to a new lady last night. We got chatting and she told me she'd had a baby 8 weeks ago and this was the first time she'd ever set foot in a gym and felt so scared as she had some baby weight to lose and was worried about being stared at. I felt so sad about that but so so impressed that she'd come as I was still lying on the sofa eating cheese at that stage and wondered how many people don't come to the gym because of that.

Don't get me wrong I'm fat no gym bunny though I do go regularly and I have alsways found that most folk are just getting on with their own shit and not looking at anyone else

I very much hope I see my new gym friend again soon

FizzBombBathTime · 04/01/2017 09:50

I've never stepped foot in a gym in my life

This thread has convinced me to keep it that way.

BitOutOfPractice · 04/01/2017 09:51

Then you've been reading a different thread from me Fizz!

FizzBombBathTime · 04/01/2017 09:56

Bit there's clearly enough judgy people who attend gyms as 'regulars'. I will stick to pounding the pavement.

Bluntness100 · 04/01/2017 10:02

I've never stepped foot in a gym in my life . This thread has convinced me to keep it that way.

thecapitalsunited · 04/01/2017 10:07

I don't mind new folks at the gym in January, they're only there for a few weeks and they keep my membership fees down.

I save all my irrational irritation for the Slimming World group running from one of the conference rooms. The car park will be jampacked every Wednesday night for about six weeks which means that I won't be able to go to one of my regular spin classes (only one other class fits into my schedule and I already go to that one!). I'm severely overweight and the spin classes allow me to get a good cardio workout in without hurting my joints. I don't have time to walk there after work so I'll give it a shot tonight but I'm resigned to cutting my cardio in half until the group dies down.

Why can't the SW people walk? Grin

Honeydragon · 04/01/2017 10:15

I wear make up in the gym. And when I'm swimming.

That's because not only do I know how to use a gym properly I also know how to apply make up properly.

Wearing gym leggings and pink lipstick doesn't stop me being able to exercise.

Although I'm thrilled now to realise that people are agog at my ability to do so.
