I know iabu so it's just a rant really.
It's great that people decide to get fit but I'm struggling to get into classes that I've been going to for over a year and its mobbed sane as last January.
I know it will all die down again by February. The gym booking system crashed today because there was so many people trying to access it!
Good luck to anyone starting a new e revise plan, I hope you manage to stick to it Halo

I walk on the treadmill when my back is bad
Wasn't aware I was comitying a cardinal sin
Don't really give a fuck as it eases my back pain and means I can move onto my weights
And If I want to tap dance naked on the treadmill I will
Cos I've paid for it
Like every other member
Hmm

londonginge · 03/01/2017 20:47

I agree but also laughed when I saw this the other day and have been waiting for a chance to use it....

Why spin when you can cycle up a real hill?

Most serious triathletes do both - static bike training is essential in the winter months.

2017watchoutherewecome · 03/01/2017 20:51

You can't park for love nor money at my gym, why don't all the people who want to get fit walk to the gym? Confused

HunterHearstHelmsley · 03/01/2017 20:53

I love it! Pay for a full years membership, go four times and pay for our lovely facilities!

Hannah4banana · 03/01/2017 20:54

I use the gym so I can go to the pub all year Grin

I read an article once that said gyms work on a business plan that depends on a certain percentage of members never using the gym. They couldn't actually operate if everyone did. So they rely on the January keen people who then drop out.

Blacksox · 03/01/2017 20:59

I think anyone thinking about joining a gym will be put off by this thread - many of them are intimidated as it is.

ivykaty44 · 03/01/2017 20:59

I've been a member at the same gym for 8 years and this year I'm using the classes in January, it's to cold outside and there was a frost yesterday.

Plenty of cyclists in A&E yesterday with the ice, it's safer in the gym on spin.

Sorry op if you don't like it but I'm staying put this winter

Lockheart · 03/01/2017 21:06

This is why I love my 24-hour gym. I can go late at night whilst the January stampede is on. It's really quite incredible the difference in numbers between December and January.

It's great that more people want to go to the gym - I'm ALWAYS recommending my gym if anyone asks - but having to suddenly share with tens, hundreds of casual new joiners who hog the machines, don't wipe down the machines (don't even have their own towel), men who don't understand the "shirts not optional" rule, people who leave the weights and equipment all over the show, and do unspeakable things to the showers, is enough to stick in anyone's craw.

Plus there's always a few men in the January rush who clearly aren't used to being around women in tight-fitting clothing and STARE. Not just general looking around, taking an interest in what others are doing, but outright staring. The place is wall to wall mirrors, if you're staring at me from behind I can still fucking see you.

ClashCityRocker · 03/01/2017 21:10

I think part of the problem is (and I may be projecting a bit - what I really mean is why I was a repetitive January-only gym goer) is that you join the gym and then it's like 'now what?'

I'd pootle about on the treadmill for a bit, go on the cross trainer, then the static bikes for a bit and finish off by using the weight machines until my arms hurt. Not only was this somewhat ineffective, it also meant it was difficult to chart progress or gain any sense of acheivement.

Last year I decided to splash out on some pt sessions and they were worth their weight in gold - gave me focus and able to actually develop a workout routine with aims and goals. I only had a handful of sessions but my fitness improved noticibly in that time and it helped me to see the difference between what I was doing before and using my time and the equipment effectively. This is what motivated me to keep going - I had a focus and an aim which was more specific than 'get fit'.

Lockheart · 03/01/2017 21:11

I don't care if people want to walk on the treadmill. I sometimes walk on the treadmill as a warm up. One girl I regularly see at the gym comes in, does 20 mins at a reasonably sedate pace on the reclined bike whilst playing on her phone and leaves. If that's what she wants to do then that's what she wants to do.

I don't have a problem with her because she doesn't leave the gym in a complete mess and she wipes the machine down afterwards. As long as you have good gym etiquette then as far as I'm concerned you're good. Trouble is you'd think most of the new January joiners were raised in a barn Confused

LockedOutOfMN · 03/01/2017 21:13

londonginge Haha! Love that meme!

DarthPlagueis · 03/01/2017 21:14

We let you use our pubs in December, we didn't complain then!

MGFM · 03/01/2017 21:15

hannah which bike have you bought? We are looking at getting one but can't make up our minds which!

Jaimx86 · 03/01/2017 21:17

My gym is shut for two weeks in January for a refurb Confused Gutted!

Hannah4banana · 03/01/2017 21:18

I got this one. Someone suggested you really want one with at least a 20kg flywheel.
Really good sale on at the moment but I'm in Scotland and so it this store.

Amazon had some good deals too.

I get annoyed with the newbies but only because I think it's such a shame when I look at them and know that most of them will quit. Fitness and sport add such a lot to my life, I want others to share it.
And I've been going to a gym for 20 odd years but only ever walk on a treadmill, being medically unable to run, so ner.

BitchQueen90 · 03/01/2017 21:24

I'm a gym regular, 4 days a week and I'm a powerlifter so there aren't many other women who do what I do in my gym. I think it's sad that so many people join in January but lose motivation/are too intimidated to carry on so I always try and help and give encouragement to the January newbies. I get the light hearted frustration but I like seeing people try and make a change.

Ackvavit · 03/01/2017 21:25

I'm a regular gym user and massive swimmer. Please do not be daunted by "regulars". I'm always impressed at anyone who makes the effort.

Hannah4banana · 03/01/2017 21:30

Why do you think so any people will quit and start in January? Is it the new year New start? I'm the same I enjoy working out and always try to push myself but I wasn't always like that. It was hard at the beginning, I didn't enjoy Much at all and wanted to quit or skip workouts then something clicked in me and I started to enjoy challenging myself with different goals. I actually have a job now where fitness is a massive factor, I couldn't do my job unless I kept up my upper body strength and cardio.
It really is light hearted, good luck to anyone starting a new plan Halo

That's the same site we were looking at. Struggling to choose one as I am only 5ft2 and DH is 6ft so need one with good height range. The one you have ordered looks good.

MGFM · 03/01/2017 21:33

I am usually more told a runner but DH is deploying this year and I am on mat leave with a baby and a toddler so thought this would be a good option.

Sirzy · 03/01/2017 21:34

Everyone has start somewhere! Good luck to them.

As for walking on the treadmill. I am a runner working up to half marathon distance BUT my gym program written by a PT includes so "walking" on the treadmill as part of my warm up before moving into strengthening exercises.

Hannah4banana · 03/01/2017 21:35

Yeah, the reviews look good. All the bikes should offer a decent height adjustment, I'm 5ft 2 too lol, have to adjust it before every class for a munchkin Grin
