To not want to go walking on beaches in the middle of January?

My DP wants to take me away for my birthday (mid Jan) with our lo, (7 months old). I've told him it sounds lovely but I'd rather have a nice meal just the two of us than spend my birthday going for long walks in the cold (most likely rain too) along the beaches on the south coast. He thinks this is very strange. I wouldn't mind if it was autumn and it was cold and sunny but January is miserable aibu? Does anyone else think a beach in the middle of winter is the perfect family day out?

Would it be a better walk without a seven month old? Thinking back trips with toddlers were hell. They always start stopped to look at shells for hours and never walked anywhere fast enough for me to keep warm.

If you're thinking of how your toddler mightn't like it and worried you'd have to take all the parenting duties and slack and comfort her when the wind whips sand in her eyes, and find somewhere to change her etc etc and it would be like every other day except with the inconvenience of sand and exposed coastal weather, Then NO yanbu.

If your DH is doing ALL of the parenting and you'd still not like to be frozen and feel like you were trudging to eternity, then NO Uanbu.

May I suggest you have a lovely child free morning with your DH actually doing everything that needs doing, without waking you by PA noise or asking you any stoopid questions, like where's the baby's food, then go for it, if you feel like doing something like it in the afternoon.

But if it's just not you, then it's just not you and do something that pleases you entirely. And happy birthday.

I have a house by the beach but I don't go there in winter, winter walks are my worst nightmare! I'm with you OP, and your DH sounds like one of those people who gets presents for others that they like, rather than what the person likes.

Gooseberryfools · 04/01/2017 02:58

It's your birthday. You choose

However beaches are at their best in the winter. Quiet, sometimes dramatic, refreshing.

Gooseberryfools · 04/01/2017 03:01

It's more wrap up warm, hot chocolate by a real fire in a cosy pub, town/harbour lights reflecting beautifully on water, fresh seaside walk, peacefulness.

HicDraconis · 04/01/2017 06:06

I love the beach in winter. On a sunny day as long as you wear a decent coat (or layers) it's a great place to spend a day. Pack a picnic, take some bubbles and a thermos of hot chocolate and it's perfect.

I live near a beach, we're there all seasons. Alternatively tell your dh to take you on a trip to my local beach, it'll be sunny and hot in January! (NZ, may be a bit far...)

(Should have said - that pic is from July, it's my beach in winter!)

GeekyWombat · 04/01/2017 07:58

Your birthday your choice, but for what it's worth we have a 2yo and 8mo and the beach is our go to trip out all year round (in fact in January it's nice cause it's empty!). We just wrap up warm and enjoy hot chocolate and sausage sandwiches at a beach front cafe when it gets too chilly. Bliss!

TheOriginalChatelaine · 04/01/2017 08:46

January often produces some sunny crystal clear blue skies. If you wrap up there is no need to be cold. I know it's your birthday but as your dh made the suggestion you could give it a try and keep an open mind. You get to choose next time!?

Marynary · 04/01/2017 09:28

YANBU. I love beaches in the summer or spring but in winter it just makes me miserable that it isn't warmer. I hate winter in the UK and a beach walk would just remind me of this. Whilst many posters on this thread state that they love winter beach walks the fact that beaches are fairly empty in winter demonstrates that many people don't.

Marynary · 04/01/2017 09:31

What "next time"? Do you mean when it is the DP's birthday?Hmm

dailymaillazyjournos · 04/01/2017 09:43

I love the idea. In theory. In practice brrrrrr and no way. Everyone is different. Some people love that sort of thing and others hate it. There's no right or wrong. You like what you like. If it's your treat then it's important you enjoy it.

user1471545174 · 04/01/2017 09:58

Why are people trying to pressure the OP into wanting something she doesn't want? Bizarre.

FakebookNotForMe · 04/01/2017 10:10

Taken on Monday. Yes it was cold but we wrapped up. Got home for a nice roast, cake and custard. Cup of tea wine by the open fire.

You could have nice pub lunches after a walk? Bound to be done with open fires.

However-if you really don't want to I think dh should respect your wishes.

I love all the photos of empty beaches. Does it not occur to those posting these that they are empty because many many people don't like freezing walks on beaches? It's great that you do, but no reason to think that OP will enjoy it as clearly many people don't.

BrownAjah · 04/01/2017 11:05

I would like it but it's your birthday so you choose. I just spent my DH's birthday at a hotel and show I wouldn't choose but he loved it and that's the point!

dailymaillazyjournos · 04/01/2017 18:40

I agree user . Doesn't matter whether anyone else enjoys winter beach walks. It's the OPs birthday and all that matters is whether she likes the idea or not.

expatinscotland · 04/01/2017 18:45

It's your birthday, you get to choose. He needs to open his fucking mind and try a nice meal out. 'No, I don't want to go away in Winter.'

TheOriginalChatelaine · 07/01/2017 16:26

Haven't we gotten a bit soft? Demelza would be up for it.....

Blinkybell · 07/01/2017 17:40

I love a good stomp about on the beach on a filthy day.

I live by the sea - the dog and I have had a lovely mooch this afternoon.

I love it in all weathers, but especially in winter

Blinkybell · 07/01/2017 17:42

oops, posted too soon.

I should have said, I love it in all weathers, but especially in winter, but I also understand that it's not every body's cup of tea and that's not unreasonable.

We had friends staying for New Year, they looked aghast when I suggested a wander on the beach would blow the cobwebs hangovers away

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 08/01/2017 10:36

This is my beach in the SW right now. Sun shining, perfectly still air, warm! People in swimming. Toddlers playing. Dogs basking in the sun. and some poser doing yoga on a stand up paddle board

Heaven.Smile

Unexpected I know for a FACT you are only 20 miles or so east of me (namechanger, not a stalker!) It's cloudy here and has been for days. Where's my sun, huh? :o But this winter has been beautiful in Cornwall.

It doesn't matter if the OP doesn't want to go to the beach - she should choose her own thing.

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 08/01/2017 10:48

(Mind you, the rest of the week looks shite)

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 08/01/2017 11:27

Sukey I'm sorry, I will go outside now and command the sun to travel 20 miles due west 😉

Next week does look a tad damp. 😳

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 08/01/2017 11:35

PS I think I know who you are - how the hell are you?
