To not want to go walking on beaches in the middle of January?

My DP wants to take me away for my birthday (mid Jan) with our lo, (7 months old). I've told him it sounds lovely but I'd rather have a nice meal just the two of us than spend my birthday going for long walks in the cold (most likely rain too) along the beaches on the south coast. He thinks this is very strange. I wouldn't mind if it was autumn and it was cold and sunny but January is miserable aibu? Does anyone else think a beach in the middle of winter is the perfect family day out?

Sorry, previous one was a bit crowded - it was New Years Day. This is more like it!

Bring blankets, thermos and an open mind!

I'm trying to imagine what my face would do if somebody said this to me in real life Grin

I'd think it was a dogging thing

squoosh · 03/01/2017 18:28

Yes, I would definitely imagine a situation with lots of flabby naked strangers!

Chickenagain · 03/01/2017 22:39

I meant open mind in just be prepared to be converted to beautiful empty spaces even when there may be a nip in the air. Flocks of geese, small wading birds, seals. OP would be amazed at the amount of people that visit at the weekend as there is so much space for everyone.

Proposal..?

Chipsandonionrings · 03/01/2017 22:49

Boxing day. I love a good bracing beach walk, no tourists, bloody hundreds of local though!

Chipsandonionrings · 03/01/2017 22:52

Nope can't attach the frigging pic but trust me it was lush! However your bday, your choice.

I fancy a champagne cream tea yum

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 03/01/2017 22:57

I've been swimming twice over the Christmas hols (Cornwall). The weather has been amazing. Winter beaches are v romantic.

We also saw 11 seals snoozing in a remote cove on Boxing Day. Very special moment. Smile

Lyme Regis last week. Stunning!! But, as others have said, your birthday, your choice. Enjoy!

This was taken on Christmas Day. We're planning on going to the beach tomorrow too. I love the beach in winter.

Having said that, it's your birthday, your choice.

I love a good cold walk on the beach in winter, all wrapped up and bracing sea breeze! Plus hardly any people Wink But it's your birthday so you do what you want.

Ohyesiam · 03/01/2017 23:29

Sounds great to me, but it's not my birthday.

grumpysquash3 · 03/01/2017 23:29

I think a walk on the beach is ok for about 20 minutes, so I wouldn't go especially.

But 20 mins, followed by a browse round a gallery and a nice lunch or coffee and cake.....that's different.

You do realise that if your DH likes the beach that much, you will have many a bucket-and-spade holiday when the little one is old enough.

BusyBeez99 · 03/01/2017 23:36

Dorset here and it's been gorgeous the last few days. We've been along the coast for walks in the fresh air and yes a little chilly but we have wrapped up warm and had a picnic on the beach yesterday even

NotStoppedAllDay · 03/01/2017 23:42

I was also thinking of a marriage proposal!!!

Written in the sand maybe?

S1lentAllTheseYears · 03/01/2017 23:43

I don't really like long walks anywhere, let alone in the cold and rain! Never have, doubt I ever will! Never understood the attraction of a walk unless there is something at the end (other than a nice view!)

DH loves them. He goes with his dad, or my dad, or both!

Your birthday, you do what you want Grin

HeddaGarbled · 03/01/2017 23:48

There are so many places you can go away for the weekend that aren't beaches. If you could go away for the weekend, where would you choose? I'd pick London myself, but other places we've done in the UK recently and have really enjoyed have been York, Edinburgh, Manchester and Bath. Further afield, Amsterdam, Berlin & Cologne were all easy and cheap to get to.

Ignore all the PP. Slogging through damp sand in the cold doesn't ring your bells. That's allowed. What does?

MrsRhettButler · 03/01/2017 23:50

Not for me, I don't like feeling chilly Grin
If it wasn't for the cold though I'd love it.
But definitely your birthday your choice.

MrsRhettButler · 03/01/2017 23:51

I have the utmost respect for UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea for swimming in the sea at Christmas!

HeddaGarbled · 03/01/2017 23:52

Brighton might be a good compromise. There's a beach but also interesting shopping and a mad Royal pavilion thing.

1970sCarpet · 04/01/2017 00:01

These beach pictures are beginning to make me feel like walking on the beach, then having fish and chips by a roaring fire.

HeadElf · 04/01/2017 00:10

I am Bournemouth/Poole/Christchurch area too and its lovely down here, I could recommend some lovely things to do around here other than walking too!

NoJimmyProtested · 04/01/2017 00:11

Yanbu. Its horses for courses, I don't really like cold weather or the countryside. If it was me I'd like to go for dinner or the theatre in London :) Cold, windy beach walks aint my thing at all.

Seren85 · 04/01/2017 02:04

I'd love it and have been on many enjoyable beach weekends in deep winter including rolling down sandhills covered in snow. But that is ME. If you wouldn't enjoy it then that's completely fine and it is YOUR birthday so you should get casting vote.
