To not want to go walking on beaches in the middle of January?

My DP wants to take me away for my birthday (mid Jan) with our lo, (7 months old). I've told him it sounds lovely but I'd rather have a nice meal just the two of us than spend my birthday going for long walks in the cold (most likely rain too) along the beaches on the south coast. He thinks this is very strange. I wouldn't mind if it was autumn and it was cold and sunny but January is miserable aibu? Does anyone else think a beach in the middle of winter is the perfect family day out?

We always go away to a British seaside resort in the winter. It's quiet, you can park easily, get into cafes etc, plus the beaches and sea are so beautiful and walking along the coast is an absolute joy!

Try it, you may find that you like it too. Smile

It's the dark that would put me off. A long night with a 7mo..... Only if the cottage had a lush looking indoor pool and sauna.

dementedma · 03/01/2017 17:09

I spent New Years day on the beach looking for sea glass but that's what I like to do. See if dh can be persuaded to come up with something else. It's my birthday on the 14th and my bloody dh is going to England to watch a football match!!

I would absolutely love a holiday walking on beaches in winter. My birthday's in February and I've had many a coastal weekend away to celebrate - I really love it.

However, that's me and you're you - if it's not something you would enjoy, YANBU to ask to do something else instead. It's your birthday, after all.

We live near the beach and I have been on the most amazing walks over the Christmas holidays. So nice to be able to get out and get fresh air. It helped that the weather was calm and sunny, I actually had to remind myself that it was the middle of winter.

Heirhelp · 03/01/2017 17:12

My 7 month old hates the wind. I had to walk inland today to keep her happy.

I'd love this. Up to you though as it's your Birthday.

Ilovetorrentialrain · 03/01/2017 17:31

Honestly I'd love it - as do many PPs - I love 'bleak' weather and walking in the cold. However you're not me - it has to be somehting you'd enjoy.

flipflap75 · 03/01/2017 17:32

I live by the beach on the south coast - love it summer or winter. The weather's been beautiful lately and we've had some fabulous sunsets.

But that said, my OH has a tendency to do what it sounds like yours is doing...arrange trips away in the name of my birthday, which are actually geared more to what he thinks of as fun that what I do! I'm pretty sure he doesn't knowingly do it, but it's annoying nonetheless. As others have said, if the beach in January isn't your thing, it isn't your thing.

Can you suggest an alternative which ticks your boxes? "I'd rather..." seems to work better for me than "I don't want to..." (which sends him into a minor sulk at my perceived lack of gratitude for his 'thoughtfulness'!)

Jaxhog · 03/01/2017 17:33

I'd enjoy it too. But it's your birthday - you get to choose.

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/01/2017 17:39

Sounds lovely but not so much with a baby. Your birthday. Your choice. We went to visit family by the sea over Christmas. This was the first time dd would go on the beach in the winter and it was exceptionally mild. I'd get him to postpone until later in the year.

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/01/2017 17:39

Oops my dd is 8

YABU about beaches in winter. We went for a walk on the beach in Minehead on Christmas Day. It was fantastic - and I'm not normally a "bracing walk in the cold" kind of person.

However, it's your birthday and you should spend it doing something you enjoy.

I'd love it, especially if followed by a lovely bacon butty/lunch/cake somewhere, but each to their own.

Crispbutty · 03/01/2017 18:00

It's lovely down here in Devon on the beaches in winter. Go for a lovely meal by a roaring open fire afterwards.

I want to book a weekend to Bournemouth now. Looks lovely.

CockacidalManiac · 03/01/2017 18:05

I've been in Devon over the past few days. Weather was glorious, lovely for walking along a beach.

mumofthemonsters808 · 03/01/2017 18:09

I prefer beaches in the WInter, I can't cope with them in the Summer, but if it's not your thing, I don't think you're being unreasonable, it is your BIrthday after all.

BackforGood · 03/01/2017 18:10

Well, YANBU - your birthday, your choice, after all, but I would love to be in reach of some beaches to walk along, myself.

CockacidalManiac · 03/01/2017 18:10

Yes; your birthday, your choice.

ShatnersBassoon · 03/01/2017 18:11

YANBU. It sounds miserable. Fine for dog walkers, but nothing like my idea of fun.

BIgBagofJelly · 03/01/2017 18:11

Like PP I would love it but since it's your birthday treat and YOU wouldn't enjoy YANBU to not want your DH to book it.

squoosh · 03/01/2017 18:12

If you'd prefer a child free birthday treat then you should have a child free birthday treat. Tell him.

Chickenagain · 03/01/2017 18:18

What's not to like? We have some fab pubs down here too. Bring blankets, thermos and an open mind!
