To think being an "apple" is the worst of all the shapes

Like lots of people, I've started the NY with the intention of losing weight. The health/fitness benefits go without saying.

BUT even if I shrank to nothing, like mrs pepperpot, I would still have enormous massive horrible boobs and gunt perched on top of skinny legs and no bum. It's less healthy to be this shape and it's virtually impossible to dress, because trousers are all saggy around the arse and hips whilst cutting into the waist, and by the time you've got a top that is big enough to cover the tits and gut, you look three sizes bigger than you really are (or "like a block" as my helpful DP once said when telling me that one oversized top was too oversized!).

If you are a pear, with a nice slinky waist, you can either celebrate your big bum or disguise it with something that makes you look all nipped in at the waist and slim. If you are a rectangle, or an hourglass, you're alright anyway. But being an apple? Awful!

Hopefully this one works, and I think it's a better article too

Clothes sizings are too "general" aren't they?

Skirts seem to be designed for cylindrical people whose hips are the same circumference as their waist!

If I try on a skirt that fits in the hip I can practically 100% guarantee the waist will be a good few inches too big.

I'm also quite broad backed so a size 12/14 dress fits on top but is too wide at the hip!

Maybe I should get my old sewing machine out and go back to making my own stuff which would be terrible because I have zero patience with sewing.

987flowers · 03/01/2017 16:49

I'm an apple and totally agree about maxi dresses looking ridiculous on me. I am slim but like others have a muffin top which is not attractive but if I lose too much weight I end up with even skinnier legs!

SaladDressing · 03/01/2017 16:49

I think I'm built to be howking spuds out of a bog in a gale.

I love this and plan to steal it. It's me!Smile

my hips are narrower than my waist. honestly, I have lost several tape measures trying to find them. the skin has probably grown over them by now....

I'm an apple and the only time I didn't have a horrible wobbly tummy was when I was dangerously anorexic.
I'm fairly resigned to it now, and would rather spend my life doing more fulfilling things than 8million sit ups, but it is really hard to find clothes that look nice,

Notveryhappyvalley · 03/01/2017 17:12

My hips are much narrower than my waist too - it accentuates the whole 9 months pregnant look!

Amethyst81 · 03/01/2017 17:13

I'm an apple and I have always longed to be a pear, it looks way more feminine and shapely. My gorgeous friend is a pear and she looks all womanly whilst I look like Mike the little green monster from Monsters Inc! Imagine this in a size 30, I look ridiculous!

pinkmagic1 · 03/01/2017 17:18

I'm a pear and at least you apples have nice legs and boobs. I have tiny boobs and huge, fat lumpy legs. Definitely can't get trousers to fit easily as they are always far to tight on the legs yet gape at the waist!

whoputthecatout · 03/01/2017 17:19

Another pear here. When I 'shrank' from a 14 to a 10 all that happened was I turned from a Williams pear into a Conference pear Angry

PotatoWaffleCob · 03/01/2017 17:27

I'm technically an hourglass but with huuuuge legs. Boobs, waist and hips are fine but thighs are massive. DH says I look like a T-Rex with boobs.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 03/01/2017 17:33

I'm a pear and struggle to find trousers that cover my muscular backside without a bad case of wedgies/ builder's backside. By the time I can get my hips and bum in, they end up slumping off my waist so the crotch is halfway to my knees, not a massive distance due to my short legs.

The bottom half remains quite consistent regardless of size. Where weight change shows is my tummy. Since having DCs I've got a load of spare saggy skin from their bumps as well as a CS overhang. My bust is back to a B cup following two interludes at F cup while breastfeeding. I also have a short decolletage which contributes to the saggy bust on clothes look. Vest tops are frequently essential to cover my bra as a neckline plunges toward my naval. My bust does nothing to balance my tummy, and I'm prone to being asked if I'm pregnant shortly after lunch despite being an 8 on the top half. Most classes that have been obsessed with my fertility status have been period 4 Blush

I'd love it if there was some way to transfer the spare on my tummy to my bust to be more hourglass. A C cup is probably about right. When I was an F, if it went over my bust, it sagged on my back/ waist.

I resolved after having DS1 that I would try on all clothing in the shop and be really critical about the cut.

whathaveiforgottentoday · 03/01/2017 17:38

I'm an apple with very big boobs and tummy. Even when I go down to size 10 I still have 32HH boobs. Legs and arms like sticks though. I look daft in skinny jeans, but I have finally managed to buy some dresses in pepperberry (bravissimo) that fit me.

Fluffyears · 03/01/2017 18:44

Being a pear is shite too. My waist is 2 dress sizes smaller than my hips and massive thighs. If I buy a dress it's too big on the top half, trousers are always gaping at the waist and a belt isn't always appropriate. If I lose weight it cones straight off my boobs which aren't that massive. I'd love to be an hourglass.

We once measure our waists at work and mine was the same as a girl much lighter and a smaller dress size than me. She had a very boyish, straight up and down shape and was shocked that a 'fat bird' had same waist size as her. I wear 16/18 and she was 12/14.

Bluntness100 · 03/01/2017 18:56

I'm basically quite cylindrical, I am developing a waist through ab exercises but I'd still say it's max about an inch smaller than my hips. When I put on weight I put it on round my middle. And front on I look quite narrow. Side on I look wider.

I would say that normally trousers and jeans fit me fine so I think lots are made with not a lot of difference between waist and hips.

I also think it gets harder as you get older, middle aged spread is actually a thing, sigh.

nooddsocksforme · 03/01/2017 18:58

I have lost over a stone in the last year so my waist is thin again . but I have a life of short chunky legs -both thigh and calf -which no amount of dieting will change. Would love to wear shift dresses with lovely skinny legs but it will never happen. pros and cons of different shapes -only a few lucky people get it all

Binglesplodge · 03/01/2017 18:59

I'm an apple. It's not cool. I tend to be very slim but even then I have no waist. Since having my son 2 years ago my stomach has refused to shrink acceptably: I'm not at all heavy (8 stone) but have the shape of a much fatter person. I dream about going in at the waist but even a stone lighter I never did. Grumble, grumble.

Sallystyle · 03/01/2017 19:05

Apple with tiny legs and arms.

Small boobs, bigger stomach. Hate it.

KayTee87 · 03/01/2017 19:07

I'm an apple too but look good at 9 stone (5"4) unfortunately I gained 3 stone whilst pregnant and am still trying to shift 2 stone of it 5 months later Sad
I'm a 34GG at the moment (32G pre pregnancy) hate my boobs being so big but on the plus side I have nice legs and bum with no cellulite at all.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 03/01/2017 19:08

I've found my people. I'm an apple. It was fine when I was younger and slim, not so much now

KayTee87 · 03/01/2017 19:08

Shift dresses and skater dresses look good with nice tights and high heels.

Temporaryname137 · 03/01/2017 19:19

When I was much slimmer, I had a personal trainer. She was stunning. When I found out we weighed the same, I could not believe it. Because apples bunch all their weight in the centre of the body, we just look fat even when we're not!

Now I am fat, I look morbidly obese. Sigh

I think it's partly that the apple shape is one that a lot of people tend towards as they get older. I'm an hourglass but now in my late 40s any extra weight goes onto my belly and I look ten years older.

QuimReaper · 03/01/2017 19:52

This is really one of the wittiest threads I've read in ages, you guys are on fire Grin

user1471461752 · 03/01/2017 19:57

Ooh I wonder if I'm an apple as well then? My legs and bum are ok but my belly is big. Any weight I put on goes directly onto my belly. Arms and face are bigger than id like too. Boobs aren't big tho?
