Working in the local hospital today and see someone waiting over 3 hours in A & E for tonsillitis. Isn't this so merging you go to the chemist or the walk in centre for?

Oh, here come the A&E top trumps.

Wait for the "rushed to resus" and so on... OP, you've not answered any questions..?

onestep I hear you. I'm a single parent so I know all about doing the school run with illness. I went to work often too - but then shivered so much I got sent home and eventually to A&E. I'm talking about one colleague who has regular "tonsillitis" which honestly means he has a sore throat and gets through a lot of Lockets Grin .

Anyway, we are all playing Tonsillitis top trumps and the OP has disappeared. I think she got the point Grin

After reading your post I tried to avoid A&E which led my tonsillitis get worsen and I am now admitted to See because I am not able speak or swallow anything. Not everyone’s tonsillitis are same and it may be one of the reason for sepsis if not treated early.

After my GP saw my tonsils he rushed and referred me to ENT doctor in A&E. I was sleepless because of unbearable pain. No pain relief was helping. High fever was making me confuse. In A &E doctor told me it couldn’t get any worse. Please do not underestimate the tonsillitis it can get worse than you think.

Earlybird842 · 14/12/2021 06:39

I also went to Out of hour GP but the oral antibiotics and pain relief wasn’t helpful at all. Because it was weekend I wasn’t able to contact my GP thank goodness my gp gave me emergency appointment after hearing my voice. I was dehydrated as soon as I reach A&E they started IV fluids and IV paracetamol which made me feel more alive. Sorry to write too much as this is my own story writing it lying down on hospital bed.

It can be awful, the last time I had it was honestly the worst I have ever felt in my life. My GP took one recoiling look at my throat and said if it got any worse at all to go straight to a&e.

I had frequent bouts of tonsillitis which would develop into quincy on a couple of occasions. Each bout hospitalised me and i needed iv antibiotics. On the last occasion an ENT consultant came down to see me and asked if I wanted my tonsils removing. I jumped at the chance. I am now tonsil free with no more bouts of tonsillitis. Grin

Tonsillitis is just tonsillitis until it suddenly... Isn't.

My husband had it, saw doctor twice, got his friend who's a nurse to have a look but kept on saying "something's not right" but everyone just said "it's just tonsillitis". A couple of days later he takes himself off to A&E, throat nearly shut, 5ml of fluid taken out of an abscess and in hospital for 5 days.

So yeh, it's sometimes a big deal.

ThesecondLEM · 14/12/2021 07:23

Maybe they couldn't get a Dr's appointment Hmm
