To spend next NYE in a capital city

With 3 DC' aged 16, 10 and 8

DH thinks I am absolutely insane to even suggest it.

I'd never dream of it. I've been out on NYE once, and I much prefer staying in. It's warmer, cheaper, and much more relaxed. And with children it would be even more difficult.

I'd recommend Sydney! Spectacular fireworks, lovely and warm too!

We used to do this every year pre children. London, Paris, Brussels, Dublin, Oslo amongst others. I wouldn't even contemplate it with children if you plan on being out to see the new year in. It gets really crowded with alot of pissed up people around. There were a couple of hairy moments as well (riot on champs elysees with fighting and bottle throwing, followed by gangs of men in Brussels). I suppose it would be OK if you just had a nice family meal and went back to the hotel early but then you could just as easily be nearer home!

I'm going to Sydney!! Can't wait! No kids though.

Just spent NYE in Edinburgh with 13 and 16 year old daughters. Had a lovely meal, then a walk up Calton Hill to watch the fireworks over the castle, Salisbury Crags and the hill behind us. It was magical, all the busyness happens at the street party down below 🎉

I wouldn't bother with London. They've lost the plot with NYE, other than as an opportunity to sell it.

I wouldn't recommend Berlin. Everyone and his dog sets off fireworks in the street from around 6pm onwards. I found it a bit scary as an adult. Edinburgh or somewhere like that could be OK.

I think it depends what you're looking for and where you usually are - I live in Edinburgh and I wouldn't go near the centre, especially with kids, because I know how crowded and unpleasant (to me! I know loads of other people love it) it can be. I dream of a remote cottage for New Year.

If your DH is not on board, would you go with the kids on your own? At those ages the kids should be much easier to cope with than younger ones.
