DH and I like the name Felicia. But we would pronounce it 'Fuh-liss-ee-a'
rather than like Feleesha. What would you think if you saw a baby with this name? Would people always pronounce it wrong?

That's interesting. I have never heard Katerina with a short -i sound. What language is it from?

Isn't it Russian?

Yes, Katerina's a lovely name. But what language does the short -i pronunciation come from?

What ina names ever have the in sound?

Oh, I don't know... how about lots of foreign ones that don't follow English phonics? Just a thought.

I agree. Katerina is a common name in many languages and cultures. I am just interested in finding out in which it is pronounced Kater-I-an, because a pp said it was the correct pronounciation.

Inez?

That's an In sound isn't it? Or is that Ee-nez?

Report
BertrandRussell · 03/01/2017 10:11

Inez is Eenez.

I'm not saying it can't be Kater-I-na. I just have't heard and wondered which language pronounces it that way. It's a name common in two languages/cultures in my heritage, and is Kata-reena in both.

I suppose it's different strokes for different folks then really isn't it?

Like Felicia

People form Azerbaijan do pronounce it with a short i.

That's interesting. Is Azerbaijani not a Russian type language then?

Report
1horatio · 03/01/2017 10:33

It's a Turkic language.

BertrandRussell · 03/01/2017 12:21

So how would an Azerbaijani say Katerina? Kater-ryne-a?

I mean really bad at writing names phonetically in English. My English isn't that great, so... wait. It exists online 😅

I think at least that this is how polly meant it. Probably...

Katariina was almost my name, its nice. If I was to use Finnish pronunciation rules I'd pronounce Katarina as kat-a-rin-a (one I is a short i sound and two Is is the long ee sound)

Natsku · 03/01/2017 12:30

Oops, Katerina so kat-eh-rin-a.

I've never heard of it pronounced "fuh-Liss-ia", only "Ful-eesha" as in "bye Felicia" - and I'm British. I would pronounce Alicia as "Alice-ia" though, rather than "Alesha"

I've honestly never heard anybody say Feleesha.

I've only heard feleesha in Pricilla Queen of the Desert - otherwise it's been felissia. I definitely prefer the felissia pronunciation anyway.
