To pronounce this name differently

DH and I like the name Felicia. But we would pronounce it 'Fuh-liss-ee-a'
rather than like Feleesha. What would you think if you saw a baby with this name? Would people always pronounce it wrong?

I went to primary school with an Alicia (Ah-liss-ia) and secondary school with an Elischa. I had no idea that Alicia could be pronounced Aleesha until I started watching the Good Wife a few years ago Grin

Felicia just makes me think of that "bye, Felicia" meme and I agree that you'd be setting your kid up for a lifetime of correcting people.

creakyknees13 · 01/01/2017 16:52

Creakyknees13...NO IM NOT...I think the very fact that we have nearly seven pages of discussion around it shows that I'm not alone in my thinking....ANY name that has an element of doubt on how to pronounce it can cause confusion, which is why I believe the OP was questioning whether she should chose it or not in the first place. Someone I know is called Alicia, and she constantly says I'm A-liss-ia and not Al-eesha

But you're projecting your own issues about your name which you have said is very unusual. The name Felicia is not weird or 'out there' or liable to result in teasing. Occasionally, it might result in mispronunciation which is easily corrected as both versions are acceptable. You have been repeatedly writing 'please don't do it', as if the OP is planning on calling her baby something completely outlandish. As I said before, there are lots of completely normal names with more than one pronunciation. It's really not as big a deal as you suggest it is.

Giddyaunt18 · 01/01/2017 16:55

The way you want to pronounce it IS the correct way. I had a friend at school called Felicia, it means happiness I think.

BillSykesDog · 01/01/2017 16:57

Also someone baring outraged by racism saying Caribbean people have problems with spelling. Give it up love.

Mumzypopz · 01/01/2017 17:11

Creakyknees13..I am actually permitted to come on here and say what I like if it is my opinion....You may not like it, but it is my opinion....So putting this very politely....BACK OFF. My name is unusual, in that it's not out there or likely to result in teasing. I was asked my opinion and I gave it....My friend who has a name similar to Felicia equally talks about how annoying it is when people say it the wrong way...So my opinion is not that unusual. Go and pick on someone else you big bully.

sleepy16 · 01/01/2017 17:13

I think it's a lovely name, two of my children have names that are pretty easy to know how they are pronounced, but still people say them wrong.
So I really wouldn't worry to much.

Fuxfurforall · 01/01/2017 17:15

...or just call her Susan?

MyNewBearTotoro · 01/01/2017 17:19

I only know one Felicia and her name is pronounced Full-ee-see-ya. She is Jamaican.

You do realise you only put one full stop at the end of sentences, right? Not four.

I found it insulting that you kept saying 'please don't do it' as there is nothing wrong with the name. I did not bully you so there is no need to overreact.

babynameconfusion · 01/01/2017 17:36

What a mix of responses! Seems like half of the people here are saying yeah go for it and the other half is saying no don't. I'll have a chat to DH later about it.

OP posts:
Mumzypopz · 01/01/2017 17:41

Creakyknees13.the very fact that you keep coming back at me and copying and pasting everything I say can come across as bullying...You are also criticising how many full stops I use ffs. Grow up and pick on someone else. I get that you don't agree with my opinion, doesn't mean you need to criticize everything I say and do. Think I only said twice (possibly) don't do it and you have come back at me several times. You even disbelieved that people ring me 20 times a day...What, you think I made that up?! Now just to annoy you and you alone. don't do it, don't do it, don't do it...........................................................Don't do it, don't do it, don't do it......

Mumzypopz · 01/01/2017 17:46

Creakyknees13.just checked..I said "don't do it" once.

babynameconfusion · 01/01/2017 17:48

mumzypops- It isn't copy and pasting, it's quoting, so that on long threads you can easily see which post you are replying to.

babynameconfusion · 01/01/2017 17:49

Anyway, back onto the topic of Felicia/Felissia

Mumzypopz · 01/01/2017 17:54

Babynameconfusion....Yes realise it is quoting, thanks, it's also copy and pasting?

creakyknees13 · 01/01/2017 18:03

Exactly. There are multiple conversations going on at the same time. If I copy the bit I am replying to, it is clear for everyone what I am talking about and who I am talking to. It is not bullying.

Sorry mumzypopz, I might have mixed you up with another poster that said something similar and thought you said 'please don't do it' more than once. Apologise for that, but still think it's an overreaction to an absolutely lovely name and could unnecessarily worry someone who has called their baby Felicia and now thinks she is in for a lifetime of having to correct people.

People often mistake my name for another similar sounding one. Does not bother me.

MyWineTime · 01/01/2017 18:18

But would kids pick up on the fellatio link? I wouldn't expect them to as it isn't that close tbh.
Sorry but it was the very first thing that came into my head!
Fell-eehsa, Felicia and Fellatio are VERY similar!
The fact that several people on this thread came up with the link immediately on hearing it, means that it is inevitable that your daughter will come across people who do exactly the same thing and think it's hilarious.

I also hope you like all the shortened versions - Flick, Fliss, Flissy

And it's absolutely bloody awful being lumbered with a name that people get wrong all the time. It NEVER stops! Class teachers in primary school might remember, but everywhere else for the rest of her life, people will get it wrong. I agree with Mumzypopz on that one!

Mumzypopz · 01/01/2017 18:25

Creakyknees13.I accept your apology thankyou, it wasn't just the copy and pasting, it was the way you kept coming back at me, criticising everything I said. Then to almost prove you were being a bully you said about how many full stops I used. That didn't put you in a good light at all.
Sometimes you just have to accept that people may have a different opinion. The OP wasn't sure about the name Felicity, which is why she asked the question in the first place, so there was an element of doubt there. As you say, other people have also said don't do it, not just me. And other people have commented, almost eight pages worth. I don't think what I said was that outlandish or shocking.

Mumzypopz · 01/01/2017 18:27

Thankyou MyWineTime

Mumzypopz · 01/01/2017 18:28

Sorry Felicia, not Felicity

Jux · 01/01/2017 18:33

My own children are called Xzsdfjq and Spawn-of-Satan. Neither have encountered any problems.

So, go ahead, op. You love the name, give it to your dd. (Seriously.)

1horatio · 01/01/2017 19:02

Jux · 01/01/2017 19:07
