To pronounce this name differently

DH and I like the name Felicia. But we would pronounce it 'Fuh-liss-ee-a'
rather than like Feleesha. What would you think if you saw a baby with this name? Would people always pronounce it wrong?

OP posts:
38cody · 02/01/2017 19:20

Agreed - it's Cat Lyn

MyWineTime · 02/01/2017 19:22

I would pronounce Katlin as cat Lynn.
I would expect Kate Lynn to be spelled Kaitlyn or Caitlyn.

Reality16 · 02/01/2017 19:28

People pronounce my daughters name wrong her name is katlin pronounced Kate Lynn some pronounce it cat Lynn!. How do you expect people to get the Kate sound without an i or an e ? I would say cat Lynn every time Confused

Booboo66 · 02/01/2017 19:32

I discounted many names that are pronounced beautifully in Greek but did not like the English pronounciation incase we moved back to the uk (we did). I wouldn't do it!

YoHoHoandabottleofTequila · 02/01/2017 19:34

That's because you've spelt it Kat. What did you expect?

Soubriquet · 02/01/2017 19:39

Katlin= Kat-lin

Kaitlin/Katelyn/Katelin/Kaitlyn etc = Kate-Lin

People are going to pronounce it how it is spelt. If you are going to get angry, spell it correctly

SoupDragon · 02/01/2017 19:40

Yes people will always pronounce it in the traditional way

Both ways are traditional and correct.

SoupDragon · 02/01/2017 19:41

Isn't Caitlin Cat-Lin too if pronounced correctly? I thought it was the Irish version of Kathleen

WankersHacksandThieves · 02/01/2017 19:44

I think the proper pronunciation is something like Cotch leen but is anglicised as Cait lin.

pieceofpurplesky · 02/01/2017 19:52

I teach an al-eesh-a, an a-liss-e-a and an a-lees-e-a.

I would say fel-ees-e-a - but would only need telling once if I got it wrong.

1horatio · 02/01/2017 20:03

Wait... Cat Lynn isn't pronounced like cat (the animal) and Lynn? Confused

MrsMeeseeks · 02/01/2017 20:18

I would imagine Cat Lynn is pronounced Cat Lynn, horatio, yes.

Jas2004 · 02/01/2017 20:19

You will probably need to correct people on the pronunciation but that's common place for unusual names. My youngest DD is Alyssia (Alice-ea), people struggle to prenounce it. Some older family members can't say it at all!

It's a lovely name. X

flyingspaghettimonster · 02/01/2017 21:05

It has such a negative connotation these days. Bye Felicia! The poor kid would hear nothing else.

BadKnee · 02/01/2017 21:12

My own children are called Xzsdfjq and Spawn-of-Satan. - Grin Jux

Pronounced "John" and "Sara" - Obvs!!

goadyfuckersgetmygoat · 02/01/2017 21:58

Agreed - it's Cat Lyn. 🎤💧bye Felicia 😂

WeatherwaxOrOgg · 02/01/2017 22:07

I like how you want to pronounce it.

And most people will hear it way before they write it down anyway, so they;ll already know how to pronounce it.

My children all have unusual names and have often had to spell them out but they all say, 5 as adults, that they much prefer their unusual names to what they call boring names, even while admitting it's caused them extra hassle over the years.

They say its minimal.

It's pretty, I'd say go for it :)

Badgoushk · 02/01/2017 22:19

To the person who knows someone with an Esme pronounced Es-may, isn't that how everyone pronounces it anyway?!

HermioneWoozle · 02/01/2017 22:21

I would pronounce Caitlin as Kathleen until told otherwise.

38cody · 02/01/2017 22:23

Yes - Esme is prom Esmay

TippyT · 02/01/2017 22:37

lol! It's a nightmare either spell it correctly and with correct pronunciation or choose another name ! I spend a lot of my working life with parents going no it's not said like that and me saying in my very clear dictation that's how you have spelt it/ or it reads doh!! All because the add extra vowels, or random constants. Then expect everyone that prounance the enitelligable name

pieceofpurplesky · 02/01/2017 23:07

I did teach a xaq once that I couldn't quite work out how to say at first.
Zach.

Confusednotcom · 02/01/2017 23:13

I've just had to Google Bye Felicia. It looks inane. I wouldn't let it put me off naming a child this.

However DD has a Dorothy in her class, and while DD doesn't know her, she tells me her pal Sarah IS a friend of Dorothy. I do like the name Dorothy but this did make me smile!

pollymere · 03/01/2017 01:11

I would say it how you want it pronounced. I have heard it pronounced the other way as well. You could just call them Felicity instead... once a school knows they'll stick with the way you pronounce it. Worked once with kids call Mia, Mia, Mya and Maya. But each one wasn't said the way you'd expect!

pollymere · 03/01/2017 01:13

My daughter's name is Katerina. Correct pronunciation is Kat er rin a but most call her Kat er ree na or Katrina!
