Totally not AIBU but I need help... having people round for dinner tonight, DH told everyone we're having fish because we have some vegetarians coming. Were skint after Christmas. We never ever cook fresh fish so I have no idea of prices or anything.

How much fresh salmon from the fish counter would i need for 4 people? Three are big eaters... how much would it roughly cost? Thank you!!!!

Vegetarians don't eat fish!

Motherfuckers · 01/01/2017 09:03

Do they eat fish if they are vegetarian?

user1477282676 · 01/01/2017 09:03

Also if you're skint, fresh salmon is hardly the way to go....

PuntasticUsername · 01/01/2017 09:03

"we're having fish because we have some vegetarians coming"

So are they those not-really-vegetarians that eat fish, or has DH just...got it all a bit wrong?

ilovesooty · 01/01/2017 09:04

You're serving fish to vegetarians?

FeckinCrutches · 01/01/2017 09:04

Does your husband know what a vegetarian is? Grin

Maverickismywingman · 01/01/2017 09:04

Buy some filo pastry and do cherry tomato and cheese tarts. Have roasties and green beans.

FeckinCrutches · 01/01/2017 09:05

But if they aren't vegetarian 4 salmon fillets will cost about a tenner.

PumpkinPie2016 · 01/01/2017 09:05

Most vegetarians I know don't eat fish?

Salmon is likely to be expensive. I'd go for a different meal - I'm sure nobody would mind.

natwebb79 · 01/01/2017 09:06

"DH told everyone we're having fish"

I assume DH is at the shop (if they're open) sorting it out then?

MiddleClassProblem · 01/01/2017 09:07

Er...

Tryingtostayyoung · 01/01/2017 09:07

No they definitely 100% eat fish, I know I've had this convo before with them, but strange I know.

Are they vegetarian or pescatarian? You can get 4 salmon fillets for about £6-10 depending on size.

cardibach · 01/01/2017 09:08

More seriously, according to the internet most shops are closed today...

welshweasel · 01/01/2017 09:08

2 fresh salmon fillets in Aldi are around £2.50 but agree you need to check whether everyone eats fish!

FeckinCrutches · 01/01/2017 09:08

So they aren't vegetarian then!

Allalonenow · 01/01/2017 09:08

You would be better making something like a vegetable pasta bake, that a vegetarian would eat, cheaper too!

sashh · 01/01/2017 09:08

Assuming your vegi people eat fish - do check, I know most don't but some do.

Get salmon steaks about 1.5 inches 'deep', you need one per person.

If you have not cooked them before

Put a little oil on each salmon steak, heat some oil in a frying pan and place steaks in - watch for the colour to change and once it gets half way turn steaks over add mushrooms to pan with a bit of butter.

When the 'other half' of the steak is cooked add a few dollops of creme fresh or cream and stir until it is warm.

Serve with loads of veg for the big eaters.

PaperdollCartoon · 01/01/2017 09:08

Ah crossed post. Salmon isn't hugely expensive, but does vary a fair bit.

MiddleClassProblem · 01/01/2017 09:08

Our supermarkets are open today until 4...

user1477282676 · 01/01/2017 09:08

Then they are Pescatarians. Not vegetarians.

ChuckSnowballs · 01/01/2017 09:10

No they definitely 100% eat fish, I know I've had this convo before with them, but strange I know.

It is not strange, it is wrong.

Vegetarians do not eat fish end of.

A nice big veggie curry full of pulses and with some rice will cost you a fraction of the price of some salmon; plus it will be VEGETARIAN.

thumpingrug · 01/01/2017 09:10

People who eat fish and claim to be vegetarian are lying to you and to themselves. Feed them beef, raw, and point out that dead flesh is all the same.

Getnakedorgohome · 01/01/2017 09:13

I would make a veggie curry or veggie chilli. Much cheaper and warmer for what is a miserable winter day here. Serve with rice/poppadoms/chutneys to make it a bit more party food.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 01/01/2017 09:14

A lot of vegetarians eat fish....of course that means they're technically pescatarian but who uses that word? It's really not that strange or unheard of...

...if you know they eat fish, I wouldn't go for salmon fillets - too pricey. Could you make a fish pie? You'll still need quality fish but it it'll go further. Or what about a mushroom or butternut squash risotto?
