AIBU to be flabbergasted that DP had never heard of rickrolling?

I find it hard to believe that anyone who has spent any time on the internet in the past ten years has not come across the phenomenon - but I discovered last night that DP had no idea. He's in his 40s, a daily internet user (twitter etc) but has apparently never been rick-rolled.

Surely he must be the only one?

But... er... what's the point of it?

Anniegetyourgun · 29/12/2016 19:26

I'm not surprised I hadn't heard of it. It sounds damn' stupid. I do know that in the chat channel of some online games some idiot starts up with "What is love" and the next goes on with "baby don't hurt me" etc. That's a crap song too, which no doubt is what is supposed to make it funny. But it really, really isn't.

ChristmasTreeKisses · 29/12/2016 19:27

30 and never heard of this and it hasn't happened to me either. Not really something I would expect people I know to know either.

Fluffyears · 29/12/2016 19:28

Erm what the what now? Never heard of it and on the internet constantly pretty much.

Teddy1970 · 29/12/2016 19:29

I haven't got the faintest idea what you're talking about...

SocksRock · 29/12/2016 19:30

Not quite rickrolling as it didn't involved the video, but my sister had the lyrics as a reading at her wedding and there was a lot of muffled snickering going on - rickrolling an entire room at your own wedding!

NoCapes · 29/12/2016 19:31

I'm 27, constant daily Internet user and I've no fucking idea what you're on about

I do love Rick Astley though Grin

HicDraconis · 29/12/2016 19:33

Never come across it as a disguised hyperlink (as the explanation above).
Going to look around now and see if I can find other examples.
To be honest I thought it was a craze that died out a while ago.
Give it a chance and it may come back though!
You may not be aware of the number of people that haven't heard of Rick :(
Up to the individual to look up something they've not heard of?
Never really gave it much thought.
Going to have to come up with something better than this 😉
To illustrate my point, I mean.
Let me see if I can find a better example.
You have all been rickrolled (badly!)
Down with the eighties (not really, loved the era).

(There was an example a while ago of a handwritten essay in this style, it was done amazingly well).

Mulberry72 · 29/12/2016 19:33

Nope, mid 40's and absolutely no idea what you're on about!

cardibach · 29/12/2016 19:34

Had no idea what it was. He's not alone.

tenterden · 29/12/2016 19:34

I spend a good part of each day online and have never heard of it. Still don't really understand what it is.............looks a bit silly really.

Notinmybackyard · 29/12/2016 19:41

Not heard of the name but I've been sent the link.

Early 40s and absolutely no clue until I clicked on this.

Ibloodyhatethomasthetankengine · 29/12/2016 19:43

Not a clue here...

GilMartin · 29/12/2016 19:45

I'd heard the term, but had no idea what it was until I read this thread.

lottiegarbanzo · 29/12/2016 19:47

Never heard of the click bait version (why? Cos wasting people's time is funny?).

Thought it was just when groups of people sang the song suddenly and unexpectedly in public places. A specific type of flash mob. Harmless and sort of entertaining?

I thought it was a large city, largely London phenomenon. An outlet for bored junior office workers, essentially.

exexpat · 29/12/2016 19:50

Wow, lots of lucky people who have never been rick-rolled.

I have informed DP that I am wrong and he is not the only rick-roll-virgin on the internet.

I just thought it was one of those stupid, ubiquitous internet things that no one could possibly have avoided encountering or at least hearing about over the past decade.

Maybe he (and all the others who haven't come across it) just stay on sensible bits of the internet, or don't click on links. I suppose MN is pretty rick-roll proof these days with the automatic previews of youtube clips...

OP posts:
GilMartin · 29/12/2016 19:51

So would this be a rickroll?

Atenco · 29/12/2016 19:51

Ok, I've been almost surgically attached to the internet for almost fifteen years and haven't a clue what it is, even after having read the explanation here, duh

topcat2014 · 29/12/2016 19:51

DW & I are off to see Rick Astley in concert in April - should be ace..

Kpo58 · 29/12/2016 19:52

My DH was Rick rolled at our wedding during the disco part. Grin

exexpat · 29/12/2016 19:54

gilmartin - that's an attempt at rick-rolling, but the preview thing means no one will fall for it on here.

OP posts:
PandasRock · 29/12/2016 19:54

I gues a lot of you weren't around in the olden days when a hyperlink was to be approached with caution on here as over 50% led to Soupy?

Just as pointless, but funny at the time.

A bit like rickrolling (have never fallen victim to this one, but have been batted many a time!)

Eevee77 · 29/12/2016 19:54

Oh, I had no idea what you were talking about then. But now I see, and yes I've endured this several times over the years experience I've had on the Internet. I know better now Grin
