AIBU to be flabbergasted that DP had never heard of rickrolling?

I find it hard to believe that anyone who has spent any time on the internet in the past ten years has not come across the phenomenon - but I discovered last night that DP had no idea. He's in his 40s, a daily internet user (twitter etc) but has apparently never been rick-rolled.

Surely he must be the only one?

pah wrong one but hey you get the idea! slinks off like a failure

cornflowerblu · 29/12/2016 18:59

Never heard of it either, what is it ?

CactusFred · 29/12/2016 19:00

43 here and got not idea what this is either.

MollyHuaCha · 29/12/2016 19:02

Clueless here too I'm afraid (but I've only just learned what an elf on a shelf is...) 😁

maddiemookins16mum · 29/12/2016 19:03

Nope, 52 here. Have no idea (without google sorry).

CaptainHammer · 29/12/2016 19:04

I thought everyone knew what it was!

RitaCrudgington · 29/12/2016 19:05

Bloody hell, I thought it was ubiquitous. My DC, both children of the 21st century, can recite NGGYU word perfect because they were being rickrolled so often a couple of years ago. I went to a cafe in Brighton last year and got rickrolled by the staircase.

Another who has no idea what it is and doesn't understand the explanation.

Sparrowlegs248 · 29/12/2016 19:06

Also never heard of it. Late 30's.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/12/2016 19:06

Maybe Dave Gorman should do an explanation. I've only just found out what click bait is all about thanks to him explaining it on his Modern Life is Goodish programme.

FatalKittehCharms · 29/12/2016 19:06

Never heard of it, can't summon interest in googling it.

EveryDayIsASchoolDay · 29/12/2016 19:07

No idea. Early 30's, daily (hourly) Internet user. Never heard of this before. Are you in the UK, op? Just wondering if it's from overseas or something.

RaspberryOverloadTheFirst · 29/12/2016 19:07

I'm 48 and certainly know what rickrolling is. I remember smirking when the Foo Fighters rickrolled those homophobic protesters outside one of their shows.

ChickenPoop · 29/12/2016 19:09

It's basically pointless click bait. So, say you search on YouTube for a chocolate cake recipe... You click on one that has a picture of chocolate cake on the thumbnail but when you video loads you are greeted with Rick Ashley's Never Gonna Give You Up video. I know what it is, I've fallen victim many times but I don't understand the point.

Gatekeeper · 29/12/2016 19:10

Never heard of it, never been rickrolled either

ClaireLumia · 29/12/2016 19:10

Another 52 yr old here and no idea what you're on about.

cosytoaster · 29/12/2016 19:10

Rita - brilliant!

I'm 50s and have heard of it, surprised by how many haven't

dementedma · 29/12/2016 19:10

News to me. Checked with family and no-one heard of it either.

Akire · 29/12/2016 19:13

Sounds really exciting......41 never heard of it either! I'm oviously with the majority of MN who if wrong box popped up would switch it off straight away

GoldAndGlittery · 29/12/2016 19:14

No idea.

longdiling · 29/12/2016 19:17

Nope, never heard of it either.

DotForShort · 29/12/2016 19:19

I know what it means and I'm over 40.

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 29/12/2016 19:20

Late 40s, daily internet user for >10 years and never heard of it.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/12/2016 19:20

That's exactly it Akire if rickrolled or with click bait, I would just ignore and write it off as just some of the pointless waste of time crap on the Internet and take no notice whatsoever. What is it supposed to achieve?

HappyFlappy · 29/12/2016 19:22

Thankyou Ooooh. I had been going to ask.
