To think if you have a party on New Year's Eve people will expect food?

DH wants a party on NYE. He's been pestering me for years but I've never been keen. It sounds like a lot of hassle and work and expense. We could easily end up with 30 adults and 40 kids ( children would have to be invited). I'm generally ofvthe opinion NYE is overrated.

He says we would only need to provide nibbles/ crisps. I think proper food would be expected e.g. a hot buffet or a big chilli and jacket potatoes and that alcohol would need to be provided. I have told him I'm asking for your opinion and will show him the thread.

Hmmm I think most likely, we're hosting for 12 on NYE and having takeaway as am over shopping/cooking/hard work and am working up to it.

But you could always invite guests as a drinks and nibbles party?

I'd expect there to be food at least. I've always took my own alcohol but would expect food.

Yes I'm expecting to be fed and for drink to be provided at the party I'm going to (though we'll bring booze and a dish or two)

I suppose it depends what time it started? If I went to a party at 6pm I'd probably expect a larger buffet but if it was 8pm> I wouldn't expect much at all, maybe a few crisps

At the very least it would have to be 'beige' food - pizza, sausage rolls, garlic bread. You could pop into Asda and get some platters!

For a large party no way would I expect proper food. But I would expect plenty of decent snacks and booze! If there was to be hot food I wouldn't expect anything more than a load of pizza and garlic bread.

Food yes but most people bring booze. Sounds hideous with 40 kids. I'd rather stay in!

I think a buffet would be needed - not necessarily hot food though - usually people have party nibbles from Tesco etc! You wouldn't be unreasonable to ask people to help contribute with food - we are going to a NYE party and have been asked to bring certain food - I have no problem with this sr all. Re drink you definitely need to supply drink as extras but everyone should also bring drink - quite often we end up with extras at the end of the night!

I don't think you would have to provide a hot meal such as chilli, but I would expect a decent buffet with foods to "pick at".

I think you would have to provide a lot of alcohol (beer/wine) for drinking during the evening, as well as soft drinks for the non drinkers/drivers/children and something fizzy to celebrate when it is midnight. People will probably bring something to drink with them, but probably this won't include anything for their children and they will inevitably drink more than they bring.

Yes I think you are right for this year. This has been going on for years and he's trying to get me to commit for next year. He wants to invite ' everyone' . And each couple will come with 2-4 kids ( aged 8-14 ish). That's a lot of people and a lot of food.

I'd put on a buffet of hot party food from M&S, probably a few trays of sandwiches, cocktail sausages, goujons and would provide alcohol too.

Not sure i'd expect jacket potatoes at an NYE party though.

Yes you will need to provide food. I would offer to bring a dish as a guest though.

i'd be sending him off tp the shops for a large buffet and for him to sort HIS party out, has been pestering you for years for a party, are you his mum ? -sorry - i'm sure it'll be great in reality and you'll have a great time, esp if he is doing most of the work

We went to neighbours last new year. Started at 8pm so we'd had dinner already then they provided nibbles. Everyone took drinks and she had extras. Doesn't have to cost the earth.
Wouldn't most people already have plans by now for NY though?! It's short notice.

NYE party? All I'd expect frankly is booze.

We always do NYE as a potluck among our friends. The host provides some food, we're all bring some things.

TBH we probably could pull a party together as lots of people we know don't have plans due to lack of babysitter. I'd rather put it off for another year!

I would, and so would most people.

It's a bit late to be organising something for this year as most people will have already made arrangements, unless you are sad like me and never do anything at new year.

I'm having a party New Year's Eve, fifteen of us, I'm providing starters, party food buffet, a friend is doing the main course of jumbalya and I'm providing some garlic bread to go with it, I've done dessert of cheese cakes, and another friend is doing cheese board, I'm also providing the nibbles, crisps, nuts, olives that kind of thing.

We have tones of booze in inc champagne, and also soft drinks and bottles of water, plus a load of ice, but I'm also aware everyone will also bring their body weight in booze.

I think a party with just some nibbles and reliant on people bringing booze would work but it's not what I would do if I was hosting personally. However hosting for 76 people is something else and I think I'd professionally cater that.

Yes, I would expect some sort of snacky buffet at least, preferably with a couple of hot options. But I think it's too late to organize for this year .

Yeah I would expect more than crisps at a NYE party. If there are going to be loads of kids I would assume it's starting early ish and going on till after the bells.

However I wouldn't be offended at all if when invited I was asked to bring a bottle and a dish.

I think you definitely need more than crisps and nibbles but not necessarily a hot buffet, just cold would suffice but with up to 70 people this would still cost a lot!

Even though people usually do bring a bottle you still need to have some alcohol in as the hosts. As well as mixers, soft drinks for the younger guests etc!
