Linkedin Invitation to Connect Request

Who do you add? People you directly work with, or do you add people you know in the same company even if you don't necessarily work with them?

Linkedin isn't FB. Strictly work related. I've seen attempts to make Linkedin more facebooky but it looked wrong and fake.

I agree. That's why I don't add people who are my friends but otherwise have no connection with on Linkedin.

But Linkedin is to expand networks. Make connections, in terms of future opportunities. So if you work in the same company, can you add them to broaden your horizons?

If others in my company invite me to connect I do so - you never know if following a reorg you will be working with them. People who aren't in my company I only accept if I know them.

My linked in is all professional contacts, work colleagues, clients etc... I don't have any family / friends on there as they don't work in my industry.

I have colleagues and former colleagues, as well as school alumni that I know personally. I do get frequent requests to.connect from "stakeholders" in my sphere of work - I am a civil servant and my customers are members of the public, so I don't think it's appropriate to connect to them.

I do sometimes get requests from recruitment companies and suchlike but usually reject them too.
