To think westerners shouldn't smoke

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 15:51

On holiday abroad right now in Asia. We've been staying at a resort where there are loads of Scandinavians, Dutch and Brits.

It really bothers me when they just light up in places they'd never do at home. We were sitting in a cafe and someone (Scandinavian) started smoking next to us. A Brit did the same at another restaurant.

Locals, including local tourists I can understand because there isn't a no- smoking culture here but anyone from northern or Western Europe or Northern America should have it ingrained that it's disgusting and unhealthy for those around them and it should be second nature.

It feels like they're just taking advantage even though they know it's anti-social!

It's disgusting, right? Or aibu?

BewtySkoolDropowt · 24/12/2016 19:15

Hope you enjoyed your two hours spend on Mumsnet during your fantastic holiday visiting fantastic places.

I didn't go on Mumsnet once the last time I was on holiday.

Assuming you are on holiday with others, aren't you being a bit anti-social?

m17362772 · 24/12/2016 19:18

I personally think it's just bad mannered to speak up when someone is eating near you. Selfish. There are lots of selfish people in the world though unfortunately.

m17362772 · 24/12/2016 19:18

Anti-social ? Have you seen the smokers corner it's the happiest most social place to be, outside any pub or work place. I think you non smokers are just pissed as you miss the gossip and business opportunities that pop up during a quick smokeGrin
Btw yes I love going on holiday to relaxed countries who accept smokers

passes a full pack around

Cherrysoup · 24/12/2016 19:44

I could have gone up the Empire State Building or be rafting in Tennessee, but end of the day, I am highly likely to get on the forums I use. Bad me.

As an ex-smoker, I'd be sure to keep away from smoky restaurants, it would annoy me.

Re throwing trash (stop it with the persistent demands to be told you're correct on that point, OP!), would you pop into a cafe in Amsterdam and demand that everyone stop smoking weed? Or tell the girls in the red light district to cover up? Or go to most states in the USA and stop people buying guns? that's not a bad idea.....

DancingDinosaur · 24/12/2016 20:22

This is true flump. Smokers are the first to get all the gossip and its great for networking, as they stand huddled outside chatting to all sorts of people they wouldn't otherwise know!

WeAreTheOthers · 24/12/2016 20:50

Would anyone like some wine with their popcorn? I have plenty. Xmas Grin

Namechangebitch · 24/12/2016 20:59

Anti social/social who gives a fuck.
If you smoke near other people you can harm their health. If this is in a county with limited health care you risk their life. I don't care about you, you self centered entitled prick. YOU know better, so act responsibly.

Legal/ illegal irrelevant, you know the science. You know the facts. You know you could harm or kill people. So don't do it. It really is that simple.

Namechangebitch · 24/12/2016 21:02

Dancingdinosaur the people who work in the bar can not step away. It might be that easy for you, lucky you. It is not that easy for others especially if you are poor.

Badcat666 · 24/12/2016 21:02

Another anti smoking thread? yawns and goes back to watching Elf

Gowgirl · 24/12/2016 21:02

RoseGoldHippie · 24/12/2016 21:07

Am I the only one wondering why the OP thinks she can't be a racist because she's Asian?

RoseGoldHippie · 24/12/2016 21:07

sorry not BE a racist, making racist comments^^

Gowgirl · 24/12/2016 21:09

You tend to get idiots in all nationalities rosegoldGrin

RoseGoldHippie · 24/12/2016 21:11

Gowgirl pretty much been my experience! 😊

lilyb84 · 24/12/2016 21:13

But, but, but... a smoking ban in your native country doesn't necessarily educate you that smoking is bad. It just means you can't smoke in certain places. As a smoker going somewhere it's legal to smoke in those places you're probably going to do so. You know all smoking 'westerners' (and anyone who smokes from anywhere with a smoking ban in place) covers a wide variety of people with different personalities, habits, approaches to life and levels of giving a shit about other people, right?

I normally come down on the anti-smoking side of things on here but YABU.

We're technically a Christian country in the UK so should we as a nation also be setting a Christian example everywhere we go, and teaching the heathens to speak the Queen's English?

Namechangebitch · 24/12/2016 21:16

Sanctimonious with all your don't harm the health of others nonsense.
Yeah judgmental with your asthma kills people bollocks.
Wow you kill joys who don't want to main others.
Hey it's so much fun over here in the cause illness and distress to others corner.

We know how to enjoy ourselves and give no fucks at all about the health of others. Yeah party time!

memyselfandaye · 24/12/2016 21:17

What a twat. Funny though. Grin

Namechangebitch · 24/12/2016 21:18

We know, we KNOW, we know, passive smoking harms people.

That's science folks.

If you do it you harm people. It really is not complicated.

FineLookingHighHorse · 24/12/2016 21:27

Well people should pack it in with all this passively smoking and malarkey;

Either smoke with intention or fuck off out of harms way.

Ta Xmas Grin

Namechangebitch · 24/12/2016 21:32

Yep - die from an unpleasant preventable disease of you want to. I don't care. Don't make others suffer on your way out.

gamerchick · 24/12/2016 21:32

Ah the token asthmatic, the thread is now complete Grin happydance

DancingDinosaur · 24/12/2016 21:35
