To think westerners shouldn't smoke

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 15:51

On holiday abroad right now in Asia. We've been staying at a resort where there are loads of Scandinavians, Dutch and Brits.

It really bothers me when they just light up in places they'd never do at home. We were sitting in a cafe and someone (Scandinavian) started smoking next to us. A Brit did the same at another restaurant.

Locals, including local tourists I can understand because there isn't a no- smoking culture here but anyone from northern or Western Europe or Northern America should have it ingrained that it's disgusting and unhealthy for those around them and it should be second nature.

It feels like they're just taking advantage even though they know it's anti-social!

It's disgusting, right? Or aibu?

OP posts:

You HAVE to do,the wofting. Its compulsory Grin

Blacksox · 24/12/2016 17:17

I think smoking is disgusting and regardless of the law, people should be considerate.

But many smokers are completely selfish and don't give a fig about anyone else.

As someone else said - smokers don't smoke to be nice. You can be sure they won't have given their fellow diners a second thought.

FizzBombBathTime · 24/12/2016 17:18

Op you need to chill out dude.

You were free to research the country's smoking laws before you went. YABU.

(And I'm not a smoker before you trot out your 'Oooohhh you're such a defensive smoker' line')

DeepanKrispanEven · 24/12/2016 17:25

I rather agree with you, OP. The fact that something is legal shouldn't be the only arbiter of whether it is moral. If we think it is wrong in our own countries to ruin people's evenings out by blowing smoke over them and their food, it is equally wrong in other countries. And if we accept that passive smoking causes serious health problems in the UK, that is not going to change magically just because we're in another country with more lax laws.

It's always interesting how aggressive smokers get on here about the slightest suggestion that their habit is anti-social. But it undoubtedly is. So it is no more OK to be anti-social in another country than it is in the UK.

Namechangebitch · 24/12/2016 17:30

With all the health education in the UK smokers know what they are doing is harming to other people. No excuses.

These smokers obviously have no concern for other people. It may be legal in that country but it is still wrong and these smokers know that. Vile, selfish behaviour.

DancingDinosaur · 24/12/2016 17:32

I don't smoke.....

CancellyMcChequeface · 24/12/2016 17:39

YABU and I don't smoke. I don't find smoking disgusting or anti-social, and these people aren't doing anything illegal. You're entitled to consider it immoral if you want, but I don't agree, and others aren't required to abide by your moral standards.

Namechangebitch · 24/12/2016 17:43

Smoking is a health issue. Passive smoking harms people. Fact.
Smokers know their actions are harmful that is what makes it immoral.

RachelRagged · 24/12/2016 17:44

Oh wtaf

YABU and more than goady . FFS

Really ? You know every single smoker then ?

Such pretentious shite.

Immoral my arse. Step away if you don't like it...

EagleIsland · 24/12/2016 17:54

The U.K. Has the NHS, the government pays for you right healthcare therefore gets a say in how you live your life. If you pay for your own healthcare you are free to live as you please. If they want to smoke they are free to.

MarjorieSimpson · 24/12/2016 17:58

dancing what about the staff that just can NOT step away from your smoking?

DancingDinosaur · 24/12/2016 18:00

If they feel that strongly about it then maybe a job in a smoky bar or restaurant isn't the right career choice.

ilovesooty · 24/12/2016 18:06

So it's a small annoying blip? A small price to pay? And you're having a wonderful time in an amazing place?

Yeah, right. Hmm

gamerchick · 24/12/2016 18:09

Really? The same government who is flapping because of the black hole in the treasury when vapers hit the million mark and therefore aren't buying their taxedcost50ptomake overpriced cigs?

DancingDinosaur · 24/12/2016 18:10

Thats the one gamer Wink

kali110 · 24/12/2016 18:12

gamer yes agree with you, it seems it's ok to slag off smokers on mnet Confused

MagicMary1 · 24/12/2016 18:13

Yabu

gamerchick · 24/12/2016 18:22

Ah I thought so Wink

It is ok because its one of the only groups of people left. If the government says so by relegating smokers to the great outdoors they must be whipped with no penalty.

harderandharder2breathe · 24/12/2016 18:27

Yabu

People can smoke wherever it's legal to do so. If it bothers you that much, only travel to places with string anti smoking legislation. With the internet on hand, it's surely easy to find out

I'm a non smoker btw. I hate smoking but would never presume to tell someone not to do something that's perfectly legal and other people are also doing.

Wolverbamptonwanderer · 24/12/2016 18:49

You can litter if you want OP. I gave you permisson Grin

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 24/12/2016 19:01

I hate smoking and don't understand why anyone under 40 and growing up with strong health messages would do so, however if they are in another country and smoking within the laws and cultural values of that place, it is not unreasonable behaviour.

I saved my private disgust for spitting on the floors of buses where it wasn't going to disappear any time soon Envy No other foreigners around though.

SallyGinnamon · 24/12/2016 19:07

Bit of a bizarre one here. Live according to the laws of where you are IMO.

Should a Saudi woman not drive in the U.K. or USA because she should know better?

Should Brits abroad insist on drinking in Saudi because the Saudis haven't caught up with us on drinking laws yet?

When in Rome...

wasonthelist · 24/12/2016 19:08

YABU OP If you don't like it in these places, don't go there.

(I am a non-smoker who has never smoked BTW)
