To think westerners shouldn't smoke

On holiday abroad right now in Asia. We've been staying at a resort where there are loads of Scandinavians, Dutch and Brits.

It really bothers me when they just light up in places they'd never do at home. We were sitting in a cafe and someone (Scandinavian) started smoking next to us. A Brit did the same at another restaurant.

Locals, including local tourists I can understand because there isn't a no- smoking culture here but anyone from northern or Western Europe or Northern America should have it ingrained that it's disgusting and unhealthy for those around them and it should be second nature.

It feels like they're just taking advantage even though they know it's anti-social!

It's disgusting, right? Or aibu?

I usually hang out at posh Asian hotels/restaurants that make patrons leave to smoke.

LBOCS2 · 24/12/2016 16:57

Me too Gamer. I loved smoking and then packed it in to have babies. If I'm having a drink (particularly with my MIL who is obviously a bad influence!) I'll have a couple and then not have any more for months.

OP, you've answered your own question. Smokers in the U.K. don't not smoke indoors because some people find it anti-social, they don't do it because it's the law. So freed from the restraints of that law, they go back to smoking indoors.

Sit outside.

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 16:57

Sirzy - drip feeding what exactly? Haven't drip fed anything. Other than my nationality which I hadn't thought relevant but hadn't expected accusations of racism which was quite ironic (btw, Asia is a huge continent!)

OP posts:
Sirzy · 24/12/2016 16:58

The "no smoking sign" appearing was a pretty big drip feed surely?

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 16:59

Still don't understand why I can't litter

And smokers are not demonized. Just don't do it where it affects me or
T kids.

And I won't stay home, thanks. The disgusting habits of smokers is but a small (albeit annoying) blip

Sirzy

That was in relation to a different anecdote about the hotel in the Middle East for work. There was a big no smoking sign but no enforcement. It's the same thing though. And it was hotel policy, not law.

@gamerchick: lol

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 24/12/2016 17:04

YABU, OP.

But... I understand where you're coming from.

How would we feel about a man who goes to x country on holiday and shags 12 years old with impunity because the AoC is lower there than the UK? Is that okay?

(And before anyone jumps on me, I'm not comparing smokers to paedophiles)

SherlockPotter · 24/12/2016 17:05

Oh boohoo, suck it up sunshine.

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 17:05

How about odfod yourself!

Honestly, these smokers are so defensive!!!

Sorry smokers, it IS a disgusting habit and, yes, it will kill you. I've seen it close up.

alphabook · 24/12/2016 17:06

YANBU to believe smoking is antisocial.

YABU to assume that smokers also think smoking is antisocial, just because they come from a country where smoking is banned.

YABU to expect these people to go outside and smoke on their own, when all the locals are smoking indoors anyway.

YABU to think that smoking being antisocial is an indisputable, universal fact, but that only Westerners are obligated to recognise this "fact".

user1481214040 · 24/12/2016 17:06

@SootSprite: thank you

SomeKindofNightmare · 24/12/2016 17:07

OP, I have to be a bit dubious about just how fantastic a holiday you can be having. Why in that case are you spending the best part of an hour on mn bitching about other tourists doing what they are legally entitled to do? Stop wasting your holiday, take the stick out of your arse and go visit another amazing place.

SootSprite · 24/12/2016 17:07

Actually I'm not a smoker, but I don't think it's the worst thing in the world and if people want to do it and aren't breaking any laws then I think you and your judgypants can bugger right off.

gamerchick · 24/12/2016 17:07

A blip big enough to interrupt your holiday to come on mumsnet to have a whinge?

Put your phone down and go do something fun with your kids. I wouldn't be on here if I was in a beautiful place. Wink

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 17:08

Not westerners (bad phrase- admitted that and not what I meant) but those from counties where there is awareness about smoking

But yeah, I get it. My mistake. I had assumed the memo about 2nd hand smoke etc had been internalized. I realise I was wrong (for some reason feel slightly shocked by that)

OP posts:
TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 17:10

Well, it's 1am here gamer so thanks for the advice but I'm not going to wake the kids right now to have fun with them.

However, I am going to hide this thread and try to get to sleep!!!

gamerchick · 24/12/2016 17:10

I'm the same LB nice to pick up and put down Grin

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 17:12

Yeah, you all caught me out. I'm having a shitty time because I came on to mumsnet to bitch about something that bothered me. You clever lot you!!!

OP posts:
TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 17:14

Merry Christmas one and all.

Thanks for those who helped me resolve this issue and I can now holiday in peace (while passive aggressively wafting away western cigarette smoke) Grin

Good night!

I'm with you -beautiful parts of the world, fabulous countries ruined by smoking. I would hesitate to return to Middle East resorts because of smoking in all the restaurants and coffee houses. Absolutely horrible. Sadly though, smoking is a powerful addiction and addiction is by nature, antisocial.

gamerchick · 24/12/2016 17:15

So is it Christmas eve or Christmas day? If the latter, hope its an awesome smoke free day for you tomorrow. Enjoy. Wine

DancingDinosaur · 24/12/2016 17:16

I take it theres no adults with you then. Or did they just get bored with your moaning and go to bed?

gamerchick · 24/12/2016 17:16

Today rather.
