To think westerners shouldn't smoke

On holiday abroad right now in Asia. We've been staying at a resort where there are loads of Scandinavians, Dutch and Brits.

It really bothers me when they just light up in places they'd never do at home. We were sitting in a cafe and someone (Scandinavian) started smoking next to us. A Brit did the same at another restaurant.

Locals, including local tourists I can understand because there isn't a no- smoking culture here but anyone from northern or Western Europe or Northern America should have it ingrained that it's disgusting and unhealthy for those around them and it should be second nature.

It feels like they're just taking advantage even though they know it's anti-social!

It's disgusting, right? Or aibu?

Trusty so because other people are doing something that is dangerous to other epoepl, it doesn't matter if you do it.

You won't feel bad that you are actually adding to it (let's be honest, there WILL be more smoke around if you smoke)?

Or is it that it's not going to be visible and there are other people so it's not YOU who responsible anymore?

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 16:42

And I don't care that you don't care. I'm having a fantastic holiday and going to amazing places but thanks for the advice (which I'll totally ignore) Smile

YABU People can do what they like and if you think it's disgusting then don't do it.

sparechange · 24/12/2016 16:44

I guess smokers haven't fully understood just how disgusting they are to non smokers.

I can't be the only (lifelong) non smoker who quite likes the smell of smoke, can I?

Sirzy · 24/12/2016 16:44

But lots of smokers in the U.K. Don't like/agree with the ban so if they go somewhere that doesn't exist of course they won't follow it.

Just like lots of smokers in the uk don't smoke in places even when it is allowed because they know it's anti social.

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 16:44

So I guess it's ok for me to litter the beach?!

You know, because there aren't any rules about it and I want to do it. So much fun not needing to find a bin and just flinging my trash where I like.

OP posts:
SomeKindofNightmare · 24/12/2016 16:45

YABU. I'm not sure I follow your logic here. You're in a place where there are locals smoking so what difference does it make if the tourists smoke too? Is tourist smoke any more harmful than locals' smoke or any more anti-social? You're still going to be in a smoking environment regardless of what the tourists do.
You chose to go to a place where smoking is legally allowed inside and in public places, no one forced you to go there. Vote with your tourist wallet and don't go to those countries if you feel that strongly.

Ahickiefromkinickie · 24/12/2016 16:46

Can't be that fantastic if you're posting on Mumsnet.

user1481214040 · 24/12/2016 16:48

@gamerchick: :) Can you stop at one pack?

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 16:49

As I've explained, I would expect people from countries with regulations about smoking to be aware of how anti social it is. It just seemed really unpleasant to see people (in this case Brits and scandinavians) causally lighting up in places they'd never do at home, screw everyone else.

I don't like cigarette smoke but I've lived in this part of the world and so knew what to expect- a small price to pay for a fabulous holiday in an amazing part of the world, that's not the issue.

Jet lag, ahickie, jet lag. Midnight here...

OP posts:
gamerchick · 24/12/2016 16:50

Why do you keep banging on about littering the beach? Litter can be picked up, you don't see people wandering about with giant smoke catchers.

user1481214040 · 24/12/2016 16:50

@Colette. Do you smoke after dinner?

user789653241 · 24/12/2016 16:51

Doesn't that really depend on individual person's consciousness?
Even in England, a lot of people litter the street, parks, beaches, etc.
Some do, some don't.
Some westerners may not smoke even it's allowed.
Some of those from under developed countries may not litter, or may not drive without car seat.

Tweety2016 · 24/12/2016 16:52

I agree with you OP
but smokers tend to be selfish anyway and if theyre thick enough to smoke then your argument is probably better won with a brick wall tbh

MarjorieSimpson · 24/12/2016 16:52

You're in a place where there are locals smoking so what difference does it make if the tourists smoke too?

Much more smoke especially?
And if you are in a hotel dedicated to western tourists (which they are likely to be), a place that is now very smoky when it might not have been or very little?

gamerchick · 24/12/2016 16:52

I can user tbh I probably wouldn't smoke the pack. Cigs don't give a decent enough hit anymore. (I use the spray) I do like the smell. Like the bisto kid me when someone's smoking Grin

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 16:53

I think I've got the answer; smokers couldn't care less about others and the impact their smoke has and only follow the rules for fear of a fine. Yabu for expecting any different. I guess I did, I thought there was some basic awareness of how disgusting cigarette smoke is to others, but sadly this now makes sense. I was too optimistic

OP posts:
DancingDinosaur · 24/12/2016 16:54

Enjoy your smoky holiday in these totally amazing places then (from which you clearly feel compelled to take time out and get on MN to moan about other people instead of just enjoying being in this, like, really amazing place.... Wink )

TrustySnail · 24/12/2016 16:54

MarjorieSimpson

You won't feel bad that you are actually adding to it (let's be honest, there WILL be more smoke around if you smoke)?

So, are you saying a little bit of smoke is OK, but a lot is bad? If that's the case, perhaps we could modify the laws in the UK to make it OK to have one person at a time smoking in a restaurant.

Or is it that it's not going to be visible and there are other people so it's not YOU who responsible anymore?

I wasn't aware that smoking amid others made a person invisible. Confused

NeedsAsockamnesty · 24/12/2016 16:54

You do not get to go to a different country and decide what is antisocial there and what is not.

We base antisocial behaviour on what the law and custom in each area is.

If smoking is acceptable inside legal and the custom then it is not antisocial

MrsJayy · 24/12/2016 16:55

These westerners have restricted smoking put on them in their own country why shouldn't they smoke if they want to yes it is antisocial but they are just glad they can smoke whereever the like

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 16:55

Gamer

Both are anti social behaviors. Litter can be picked up so why not throw it? Smokers can smoke outside, away from others. It's not difficult.

OP posts:
gamerchick · 24/12/2016 16:56

No, smokers are practically the only group of people who can be demonised without much backlash these days. That's all.

If you don't like it, go somewhere smoking is limited or stay at home.

DancingDinosaur · 24/12/2016 16:57

Smokers can smoke outside, away from others. It's not difficult

Seems like they can smoke where they like where you are Smile
