To think westerners shouldn't smoke

On holiday abroad right now in Asia. We've been staying at a resort where there are loads of Scandinavians, Dutch and Brits.

It really bothers me when they just light up in places they'd never do at home. We were sitting in a cafe and someone (Scandinavian) started smoking next to us. A Brit did the same at another restaurant.

Locals, including local tourists I can understand because there isn't a no- smoking culture here but anyone from northern or Western Europe or Northern America should have it ingrained that it's disgusting and unhealthy for those around them and it should be second nature.

It feels like they're just taking advantage even though they know it's anti-social!

It's disgusting, right? Or aibu?

Buckyou

Why do you think I'm British?

Wario · 24/12/2016 16:15

I'm an Asian living in Britain Grin and I don't smoke, but I'd find it strange if tourists went and smoked outside or whatever rather then inside when it's allowed. When in Rome and all that. Plus the whole westerns should no better coming from more developed countries is cringe!

pigsDOfly · 24/12/2016 16:16

But they're allowed to smoke in the restaurants, so why wouldn't they.

I'm a non smoker so probably wouldn't go somewhere where people smoke where I'm eating. At the same time, I wouldn't expect them to adjust their behaviour for me if that's how it works in that country.

Wolverbamptonwanderer · 24/12/2016 16:16

Yeah the coherent counter argument is that you don't get to boss people around and that people will generally fit into local laws and customs when they go away. Your idea is completely ridiculous and you've not managed to convince anyone here that you have a coherent argument

Bailey101 · 24/12/2016 16:16

So it's ok for the locals to smoke, but westerners shouldnt be so stupid Hmm That's pretty xenophobic, and sounds like you're looking for reasons to look down on the people who's country you're imposing yourself on.

TrustySnail · 24/12/2016 16:16

When I was in the Middle East with the hotel smokers

So, lobby the governments of all the countries you want to visit to change their smoking laws.

Best of luck with that one Grin

Sdt

Well, for example, where we were staying, there was litter on the beach. I still wouldn't litter even if there weren't rules against it?
Why? Because it's anti social.
I wouldn't go to the beach and say 'woo hoo, no rules against littering, I don't have to go to the hassle of finding a bin!'
You know, consideration for others and all that. You don't check it out at heathrow.

OP do you drink? Because quite a chunk of people find alcohol anti-social, smelly and unpleasant. Or drive? Ditto. Or wear/don't wear smelly deodorant?

Just because certain countries have their knickers in a twist about smoking doesn't mean we all don't do things that impact on others.

ohdofeckoffnowdear · 24/12/2016 16:18

Christ, get over yourself. If you feel that strongly about it maybe think about your future holidays and not go to the country's that don't have any smoking laws.

user1481214040 · 24/12/2016 16:19

"Why not? I'll smoke wherever I'm legally permitted to do so.

Sounds like a lovely places "

This.

Wolverbamptonwanderer · 24/12/2016 16:19

I am always a bit miffed when People don't seem to understand that smokers smoke. That's what they do.

As far as I know, being addicted to/ loving littering and doing it 15 times a day isn't a "thing"

gamerchick · 24/12/2016 16:19

Oh yay, a Christmas smoking thread. Thankyou thankyou Xmas Grin Xmas Grin Wine Star Xmas Grin

NoJimmyProtested · 24/12/2016 16:19

YABU. Smoking whenever and wherever i want, especially in the sunshine, is one of the true perks of being on holiday Grin

Trifleorbust · 24/12/2016 16:20

Sanctimonious twaddle. You can choose to abide by a law at home without voluntarily abiding by it in a place where it doesn't apply.

Ahickiefromkinickie · 24/12/2016 16:20

This smacks of 'enlightened white people should know better than those poor heathen foreign smokers'.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/12/2016 16:20

Hi gamer. Did you hear the klaxon?

I always end up on these with you dirty, anti-social weirdos. Even though I don't smoke and dislike the smell. I hope you appreciate the support. Grin

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 16:20

Trusty

Actually in this case there were big fucking no smoking signs on the hotel lobby. No one cared.

I couldn't excuse myself, I had to be there.

Still thinks it's anti social. And disgusting.

Sure, I understand it's legal and that people WiLl do it because they can. But doesn't make it any less anti social than if they lit up in a restaurant in London or Stockholm

TheCompanyOfCats · 24/12/2016 16:21

Of course user

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 16:22

Mrsterry

Your health won't be impacted because others drink or don't wear deodorant.

Smoking is different in how it impacts those around.

OP posts:
MrsTerryPratchett · 24/12/2016 16:22
That`s what it should be like...
Sirzy · 24/12/2016 16:22

Ooh a bit of drip feeding because things aren't going your way!

AliceThrewTheFookingGlass · 24/12/2016 16:23

Do you object to a Saudi drinking in a British restaurant? After all we haven't caught up to their drinking laws yet.

I was going to ask the same thing sparkly

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/12/2016 16:23

Yes it will. I get migraines, which can lead to an increased risk of strokes. Screw you all with your fake-vanilla armpits.

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 16:23

Ahickie

Who said anything about being white?

And westerners expanded to include singaporeans and Japanese too for that matter. All should know better

OP posts:
memyselfandaye · 24/12/2016 16:23

Did you ask them to stop smoking near you?
