To think westerners shouldn't smoke

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 15:51

On holiday abroad right now in Asia. We've been staying at a resort where there are loads of Scandinavians, Dutch and Brits.

It really bothers me when they just light up in places they'd never do at home. We were sitting in a cafe and someone (Scandinavian) started smoking next to us. A Brit did the same at another restaurant.

Locals, including local tourists I can understand because there isn't a no- smoking culture here but anyone from northern or Western Europe or Northern America should have it ingrained that it's disgusting and unhealthy for those around them and it should be second nature.

It feels like they're just taking advantage even though they know it's anti-social!

It's disgusting, right? Or aibu?

pluto do fuck off inside where its smoke free, there's a dear.....
Off for a fag, who's coming?

Namechangebitch · 26/12/2016 21:33

And I'll say it again.
If you want to kill yourself and pay for the pleasure please do.
If you don't like it in a restaurant, leave, or don't go in.

The workers in these bars and restaurants have no choice. It is a human right that you should be able to work free from harm. People who are fully aware of the harm they are doing to others by smoking in the work place of others are acting in a way that is immoral.
Knowingly harming others is immoral. You are violating the human rights of the people who work in these bars/restaurants.

1horatio you don't get outraged but assume we are discussing other holiday makers. Perhaps you should be outraged on behalf of the workers who have little choice.

Clearly there are issues with air quality in relation to smog and aircraft but that does not negate the issue with smoking. This argument is fatuous.

gamerchick · 26/12/2016 21:35

Off for a fag, who's coming?

Meeeee! I bought a pack of 10 yesterday, I still have 6 left Grin

Namechangebitch · 26/12/2016 21:36

Cowgirl a concise and considered argument that more or less sums up the level at which most pro smoking arguments operate. Thank you for clarifying the issue.

Gowgirl · 26/12/2016 21:39

namechange hardly pro smoking, more pro choice....inside you go its freezing out anyway

gamer its Christmas!!!!!Wine

YoScienceBitch · 26/12/2016 21:39

Maybe you should start smoking so you're not so fucking uptight.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 26/12/2016 21:43

My mum smoked a lot and so did my husband

The bit i really really dont get is how it all started

Who thought that putting a bunch of dry leaves in a piece of paper, setting light to it AND THEN PUTTING IT IN THEIR MOUTH was a good idea...-a self harming arsonist thats who

I appreciate that it must taste nice Smile

Its a bit like drinking cows milk...who thought " ooh look at that calf drinking from its mum...the calf seems to like it...MUST TRY IT MYSELF"

Or eggs....i love them, but still!!

Namechangebitch · 26/12/2016 21:47

You are absolutely right I am very uptight about improving the working conditions of people in other countries. I do loose me sense of humour while discussing the health of people who may not be born in a country where free health care is a right.

I suppose I could 'relax' and become an entitled, thoughtless brat who exploits people born in less fortunate circumstances. On the whole I think I will continue to support the rights of workers to work in a place free from harm.

gamerchick · 26/12/2016 21:47

TIs Wine

It really doesn't taste nice, but you get past that Grin

Lweji · 26/12/2016 21:47

Maybe you should start smoking so you're not so fucking uptight.

What a stupid thing to say.

You are really telling people to start killing themselves? Because they'd rather not breathe disgusting and cancer inducing smoke?

I don't smoke in pubs because it's illegal. Doesn't mean I agree with the law.
So, you don't care if you give others cancer?
You don't agree with a law that protects people who don't smoke (and smokers too) from developing cancer?

Maybe you're also happy with loud noises any time of the night. Or no sanitary regulations in restaurants or food manufacturers too.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 26/12/2016 21:48

gamer

Like coffee

Or whiskey

Grin
gamerchick · 26/12/2016 21:50

gamerchick · 26/12/2016 21:51

Like gin. Ruddy horrible stuff for the first 4 I think.

Gowgirl · 26/12/2016 21:52

Actually bar jobs are pretty hard to come by now days COS THE PUB IS EMPTY! They cant survive on the sunny days and one pint crowd!

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 26/12/2016 21:54

Sloe gin is nice

But again who thought

Fuck me this stuff is gross....lets add some berries

1horatio · 26/12/2016 21:55

you don't get outraged but assume we are discussing other holiday makers. Perhaps you should be outraged on behalf of the workers who have little choice.
Maybe I should. If you are actually outraged I suggest you try changing the laws of whatever countries you happen to think about...

Clearly there are issues with air quality in relation to smog and aircraft but that does not negate the issue with smoking. This argument is fatuous. I didn't make that argument...

gamerchick · 26/12/2016 21:56

Yep the anti smoking crowd REJOICED when the smoking ban came it. All the tales of how they would go the the pub more now the horrible smokers had pissed off. So much high fiving.

My favourite pub, always heaving is now a bookies. So many pubs died, so many jobs lost.. but it's ok because their health is saved! Woooo.

1horatio · 26/12/2016 21:57

I wonder whether this is a case of Westerners trying to civilise other countries or...

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 26/12/2016 21:57

All these empty pubs.

Five pubs in our large village pre smoking ban

Sane five pubs post smoking ban

Same with the villages around us and the towns

I am happy to accept that some may have shut

But anocdata wise, not here

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 26/12/2016 21:58

Aaah so you must live in a non pub area gamer

Maybe thats why i havent noticed a difference.....

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 26/12/2016 21:59

Sane!!!!

Same obviously

Honestly maybe i should start smoking to calm my nerves....or have another whiskey

gamerchick · 26/12/2016 22:00

Sloe gin is nice. But again who thought
Fuck me this stuff is gross....lets add some berries

I've never tried that one but to be fair I can't blame someone for seeking things to add to it Grin

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 26/12/2016 22:02

I think shit load of sugar helps as well

Grin
gamerchick · 26/12/2016 22:03

Well to be fair there's not much else to do in a village but get pissed I would have thought.

Gowgirl · 26/12/2016 22:03
