To think westerners shouldn't smoke

TonaldDrump · 24/12/2016 15:51

On holiday abroad right now in Asia. We've been staying at a resort where there are loads of Scandinavians, Dutch and Brits.

It really bothers me when they just light up in places they'd never do at home. We were sitting in a cafe and someone (Scandinavian) started smoking next to us. A Brit did the same at another restaurant.

Locals, including local tourists I can understand because there isn't a no- smoking culture here but anyone from northern or Western Europe or Northern America should have it ingrained that it's disgusting and unhealthy for those around them and it should be second nature.

It feels like they're just taking advantage even though they know it's anti-social!

It's disgusting, right? Or aibu?

Wait til they all grow up gow

Feels like ages but time just slips by

DancingDinosaur · 24/12/2016 22:07

Oh you're still rattling on namechange. Yawn.

gamerchick · 24/12/2016 22:08

JustAnotherPoster00 · 24/12/2016 22:09

As its Xmas name change I got you the gift of being reported for being a GF

Gowgirl · 24/12/2016 22:09

Yep, I suppose I could take them to a smoke free pub, but its an adult environment, boring for them and irratating for every other person enjoying their lunchtime pint....
Almost as irritating as non smokers banging on about fag smoke in the few places its allowed Grin

Badcat666 · 24/12/2016 22:13

Asthma does kill people.

But it's nothing to do with other people smoking these days, it's the shitty air quality that fucking causes it. Shitty air quality caused by the emissions from planes and cars. Planes and cars that the OP has been using to travel round the world to moan about people smoking. FFS.

DancingDinosaur · 24/12/2016 22:25

Yep, I'd go with that Badcat.

Gowgirl · 24/12/2016 22:26

Me too!

kali110 · 24/12/2016 22:28

I think some of the nastiest comments have come from the non smokers to the so called 'selfish smokers'.

Btw i'm an asthmatic non smoker before anyone tries to say i'm a defensive smoker Grin

MunchMunch · 24/12/2016 22:28

OP YANBU

I wonder how many of the smokers on this thread, (who will smoke anywhere in public if they're allowed to) would smoke in their own home?

Most smokers I know go into their gardens, even in shitty weather so that their homes don't stink.

But that's ok, I don't mind going on holiday and inhaling second hand smoke while I eat. Yum! Hmm

kali110 · 24/12/2016 22:34

munch and the few Smokers i know smoke in their own homes.
Maybe smokers, like all people are different?

DancingDinosaur · 24/12/2016 22:38

Goodness Munch, maybe you should stay home then. Or get food delivery to your holiday apartment?

Xenophile · 25/12/2016 10:25

Is smoke from "westerners" (which now includes Japan and Singapore(surprise!!)) in some way worse than smoke from those ill informed furrin types? Is second hand smoke from say, Salem's or Perilly's worse than from Silk Cut or Benson and Hedges? Because, unless it is, your view is imperialistic and ridiculous and YABVU.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 25/12/2016 10:27

Erm you're holidaying in their country.

user1481214040 · 25/12/2016 14:42

@gamerchick: Merry Christmas

Destinysdaughter · 25/12/2016 14:49

I was in Pune in India a few years ago. After 2 weeks I was having breathing difficulties, nothing to do with smoking, it was the pollution from the traffic, burning rubbish etc. These to me are a much bigger deal than a bit of fag smoke TBH.

Get a grip OP!

Hysterectical · 25/12/2016 17:20

As someone who lives in Asia, you may want to ask them if they realise that young prostitutes hanging off your arm is both abusive and ugly. But to answer your OP, I think fuck off sums up a timely response to your stupid and ignorant words.

expatinscotland · 25/12/2016 17:31

Get a fucking life.

MarjorieSimpson · 25/12/2016 17:34

If they feel that strongly about it (passive smoking) then maybe a job in a smoky bar or restaurant isn't the right career choice.

Now I'm really wondering if anyone would dare saying something like this to someone working in a bar/restaurant in the UK....
I suspect not. Actually I'm sure no one would ever dare. And for very obvious reasons too (such as they might well not have the choice to do any other job!!)

Strange how one rule works on Brits but not on people from other countries doesn't it?

OliviaBensonOnAGoodDay · 25/12/2016 17:39

While I kind of get what you mean, I must say as a smoker one of the best things about being on holiday is being able to light up on a terrace without feeling like a pariah.

I suppose I deserve to feel like a pariah, but it's nice not to.

Grin yes of course I dare to say that to someone in the UK. You might not dare but I have no hesitation. Loving the way you're pitifully attempting to turn that round though. Crap attempt though Wink

user1481214040 · 25/12/2016 17:59

@Olivia. Why should you feel like a pariah for smoking on a terrace outside?

RoseGoldHippie · 25/12/2016 18:08

It's weird but you sound like your supporting the OP but then say this...

Strange how one rule works on Brits but not on people from other countries doesn't it?

Isn't that what the op is suggesting? Just replacing 'Brits' with 'Westoners'

OliviaBensonOnAGoodDay · 25/12/2016 18:09

In the UK, on a restaurant terrace, I wouldn't smoke. I just know it wouldn't be cricket. But on holiday, everyone does it, so I do it too.

I'm a few Kir Royales in so I'm probably not explaining myself well!
