Depends on the airline, airport, where you're flying to etc. Go on the airline's website and it should tell you. Rule of thumb - at this time of year if you're at a busy airport I'd allow half an hour to check luggage in and half an hour to get through security and to the gate. Most airlines you have to be at the gate half an hour before departure for international flights but it could be more, so worth checking.

I've been really late before. Made it known to check in staff and at security and have been whisked through. Could not believe how helpful they were. It's happened twice, same help each time.
(I had pretty good reasons so didn't feel guilty about queue jumping)

And totally agree with Bitless - there's just no place for embarrassment if you're going to miss a flight - head down, lots of "I'm sorry" and walk straight to the front of the queue, and grab staff for help!

Unfortunately my life is not as interesting but you made me smile so much . It's to do with my sister and her catching the flight and options .
But reading some of the posts I wish I can give you some exciting story ....just because it's Christmas ( love actually????)

Heathrow to US they like you there 3 hours before the to rest of EU 2 hours. if your sister is late always worth when you go to passport and security scanning to go front of queue and tell them if you rae very late and they will let you to front of queue and ditto once through there and trying to queue at the air line desk whether you have boarding passes already or not.
