13 at the table

I've just realised we'll be 13 at my sister's Christmas dinner table. I'm superstitious, She isn't. AIBU to worry?

Bring a teddy bear to sit with you.

5000candlesinthewind · 24/12/2016 09:00

Don't worry, just make her get up from the table first.

harderandharder2breathe · 24/12/2016 09:19

Yabu

What are you going to do, ask someone to stand up for dinner?

Get a grip

ememem84 · 24/12/2016 09:19

Set a 14th place and bring a bear/doll/stuffed animal. And make sure that the first person to get up doesn't get up alone.

notagiraffe · 24/12/2016 09:20

Yes, bring a bear.

UnicornInDMboots · 24/12/2016 09:22

I'm truly baffled. Yabu

HerBluebiro · 24/12/2016 09:29

Traditional to put a place out for a stuffed toy if this sort of thing bothers you

All I can see is it makes newest member of the family feel uncomfortable for making the table 13.

Pinch the Jewish tradition and banish your superstition with an empty place set for Abraham. That should work :)

EnormousTiger · 24/12/2016 09:39

Does anyone really believe in or notice that kind of stuff? I know the Chinese have a big thing about buildings with a particular number - is that six?

Good ol' MN! Never ones to suffer fools gladly. I think I'd rather risk the bad luck than suggest to my sister that we set a place for a doll / teddy. Blush

Zimmerzammerbangbang · 24/12/2016 09:50

The Chinese number is 4 because it sounds like the word for death.

ChickenPoop · 24/12/2016 09:51

YABU.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 24/12/2016 09:52

Teddy bear or the cat.

IhatchedaSnorlax · 24/12/2016 10:01

I would set a 14th place - even if it weren't a full dinner place (just cutlery & a glass & likely I'd put water in the glass).

I also don't cross on the stairs or walk under ladders though. Grin

wornoutboots · 24/12/2016 10:03

it's traditional in some places to set a place at the table for your ancestors.

JigglyTuff · 24/12/2016 10:04

Tell your sister you're bringing your imaginary friend

sansoucitherednosedcariboo · 24/12/2016 10:49

My DSis is a pragmatic humanist & has absolutely zero tolerance for her CoE, slightly woo-woo, sometimes scatty and "sensitive" elder sister )yes, that's me). I think I should probably keep my weird ideas and fancies to myself.

Oh joy.

The Savoy hotel have a black china cat that they set a place for, if they have a booking for 13...

iklboodolphRedNoseReindeer · 24/12/2016 12:57

Unless one of you is called Jesus I wouldn't worry - it's not even Easter Wink

sansoucitherednosedcariboo · 24/12/2016 21:55

DD reminded me that all the DC sit at an adjoining table, so technically not all of us will be at one table. She's a love.
