Five years ago. How did I not know?

I worked with someone once who genuinely had doubts about whether the earth was round. She said she saw compelling truth in some of the flat earth arguments

It was when she asked me what the curvature of the earth was. I said I had absolutely no idea, and she said that proved her point. I'm a structural engineer, and apparently the fact that we don't take into account the curvature of the earth when designing buildings means that we are all in on some conspiracy that the earth is flat.

The fact that over the length of a 20m building, the curvature of the earth would be utterly insignificant compared to natural variations in ground level, and indeed construction tolerance (we allow around 10-15mm vertical inaccuracy just from the construction) is a convenient excuse...

Thing is, you only have to go up a high mountain near the sea, with a wide view of the horizon, to actually see the curvature of the earth.

There was a great bit in Toast Of London last year, where Stephen Toast accidentally walks into the soundstage where Kubrick is filming the Moon Landing.

If you look up Lenny Pozner, he's the father of one of the Sandy Hook victims and has been fighting conspiracy theorists ever since he lost his son. People who claim his son never existed etc, puts a really human spin on being on the other side of these fantasists.

And back to the Diana thing; who would benefit by lying about the death of Diana? A long list of credible witnesses, with the complicity of the media at large? Or the employer of a driver that drove Diana's car into a pillar? How a film bankrolled by Al Fayed can be seen as a beacon of investigative integrity just baffles me. People want to believe conspiracies because they feel that it gives them a special insight, that they are better than the 'sheeple'.
The fact is that they are the gullible ones; able to be distracted by any nutter with a grudge.
