I was talking to an American friend and he made this blanket statement, "Everyone wants to come here!"

Is this true?

DearMrDilkington I lived in Missouri mostly, but have lived here for 17 years now so my experiences are very out of date.

ChittyBB · 22/12/2016 20:00

I have lived there. I loved it. I lived in California where the weather was amazing and people lead very outdoorsy lives. I would happily live here again but I as love it here and I feel more at home here.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 22/12/2016 20:00

We did. We came back to the UK for a reason

backwardpossom · 22/12/2016 20:01

I'd rather shit in my hands and clap, tbh.

TinyTemperamental · 22/12/2016 20:02

No way!

SmellyHead · 22/12/2016 20:04

No no no no no. It sounds awful: guns, Trump, rapey colleges, no NHS, overt racism, war-mongering, environmental carelessness and rubbish food.

wheresmycake · 22/12/2016 20:04

No cos :
Guns
Healthcare
Education system
Politics
Religion
Too far from anywhere else I'd want to go

DearMrDilkington · 22/12/2016 20:05

Joiner oh Missouri looks beautifulGrin.

e1y1 · 22/12/2016 20:07

As much as I like the idea of living in the US. I have a feeling the reality would be very different.

The one thing that puts me off is gun crime, spending every day wondering if I was going to get shot, I know that sounds extreme, but the US gun control laws are just way too lax.

Blacksox · 22/12/2016 20:07

I'd love to live there - only somewhere really nice though.

We have a place in sw Florida, and, much as we love it - I couldn't live there. I need proper seasons.

bluetongue · 22/12/2016 20:08

Maybe, post Trump and if my health care was taken care of. It's a big diverse country,

Would love to move to the UK actually. Maybe I just spend too much time on Mumsnet Smile

cornflowerblu · 22/12/2016 20:08

Yes we would love to but visas are hard to come by. However, we would only live around New York, Boston or possibly Chicago.

PebbleInTheMoonlight · 22/12/2016 20:08

No...

  1. Trump
  2. Guns
  3. Erosion of women's rights (specifically abortion)
  4. Health care system

On the other hand their northern neighbour has always presented itself as a really attractive prospect.

lovelearning · 22/12/2016 20:10

"Everyone wants to come here!"

I can see his point.

I could happily live in any one of several states in the USA.

stuckinny · 22/12/2016 20:12

No way surely. There are plenty of people already in the US that don't want to be there.

LotisBlue · 22/12/2016 20:13

No way, for all the reasons above. I have visited the US and loved it but I couldn't live there.

AmysTiara · 22/12/2016 20:14

No way. What an arrogant way to think.

SquinkiesRule · 22/12/2016 20:14

We lived there for a loong time, too long. Sadly your friends idea that everyone wants to move there is a common belief among Americans, I heard it lots of times. I used to tell them it wasn't true, and why would they want to there are some beautiful places to live other than US, they still didn't think I was right. I gave up, I'd smile and nod and say "not really", and change the subject before they could ask more.

Spudlet · 22/12/2016 20:15

Guns
Healthcare (lack thereof)
Trump
No footpaths
Trump
Religion
Very different ideas on work-life balance
Trump

No, no thank you. The uk has many downsides, but I still prefer it to Trumplestilzkin-land.

periwinklepickspoppies · 22/12/2016 20:16

Hell would freeze over first.

MycatsaPirate · 22/12/2016 20:17

Guns

Death penalty

Rife racism

Trump

Guns

Medical bills

Guns

That would be a resounding no from me.

TheCatsMother99 · 22/12/2016 20:17

If trump hadn't been elected, then for a year or two.

Now - no bloody way. Doesn't appeal at all now.

Sybys · 22/12/2016 20:17

No way. Some beautiful places but the visible poverty (due to crap worker's rights, the lack of an nhs equivalent or an adequate social safety net) is horrible. Depressing place to even visit.

Redrocketship · 22/12/2016 20:17

"guns in every home"

Lol. Yes, as soon as you move here you are just given a gun, free of charge. It's compulsory to have one. Hmm

GinAndTeaForMe · 22/12/2016 20:18

No.
