I was talking to an American friend and he made this blanket statement, "Everyone wants to come here!"

Is this true?

Not a cat's chance. I can't begin to imagine what it would be like to live in a country where any stupide tosser can own and carry a gun. Madness.

kerryob · 22/12/2016 19:51

Nope no way, image in films and tv is very different to the actual country

SabineUndine · 22/12/2016 19:51

I wouldn't even go for a holiday, even if it was free.

Simply not somewhere I'm remotely interested in seeing and a culture I see more than enough of in the UK.

DearMrDilkington · 22/12/2016 19:51

I'd love to live in America purely because I think it's a beautiful country, but the guns and trump would put me off if I could ever afford to move there. Connecticut does looks beautiful though.Grin

I'm in the minority though so not sure what your friend is on about.

SloanyAnne · 22/12/2016 19:51

That's stupid obvs Blush and Grin

oldlaundbooth · 22/12/2016 19:52

No.

Guns and the healthcare situation? No thanks.

squoosh · 22/12/2016 19:53

I like America and plan to visit again in the future. But no, I don't want to live there. Especially since recent fucked up electoral events.

Although a 6 month secondment to Manhattan would be okay with me!

DearMrDilkington · 22/12/2016 19:53

Ah yes, I forgot about the crap healthcare as well. Although I expect the UK will be the same in a few years sadly.

GingerHollyandIvy · 22/12/2016 19:54

I've been asked loads of times why I would live in the UK when I could live in the US. This is by British people, mind you.

Frankly, I'd much rather live in the UK. But that's just me. Others may choose differently. (obviously)

SerialReJoiner · 22/12/2016 19:54

No, I moved to England to get away from there! Grin

Merriment · 22/12/2016 19:55

No way.

DearMrDilkington · 22/12/2016 19:55

Ooo where did you live in america Joiner?

FrostyWind · 22/12/2016 19:55

God, no. Don't even want to visit, especially not now they've elected Trump.

There are so many more countries I'd rather visit.

fueledbybacon · 22/12/2016 19:56

Not if you paid me. I live in a neutral country and that makes me very happy.

FuzzyCustard · 22/12/2016 19:56

Gosh no. Trump and guns.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 22/12/2016 19:56

No I wouldnt want to. The availability of guns makes me uncomfortable, their police make me uncomfortable, their health care system would worry me. I like the UKs proximity to Europe. My family are here and I like the fact that for the most part we are a live and let live society.

SherlockPotter · 22/12/2016 19:56

Fuck no.

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 22/12/2016 19:56

Guns

Death penalty

No free healthcare

Trump

No. I don't want to live there.

IcedVanillaLatte · 22/12/2016 19:56

Well, it's a very big country. Lots of parts of it have stricter gun laws than others, and of you go to the right places they've got all kinds of artisan and regional cheeses and beers and chocolate and whatnot (I've never been to the US but have had family living there), and given our own situation I don't want to judge a while country by its elected politicians. So I'm sure there are plenty of places in the US I'd like living, but I'm happy being British and living in Britain (political shite that makes me very sad notwithstanding).

FuzzyCustard · 22/12/2016 19:56

Oh and their shite chocolate.

Foldedtshirt · 22/12/2016 19:57

No, I have the right to, and we discuss it regularly but the guns and healthcare put me off.

SloanyAnne · 22/12/2016 19:58

The lovely American woman working in a shop near me said she moved here with her British husband as they wanted their kids to grow up where there was a vanishingly small chance that they'd be shot. I don't know whichpart of America she came from but it really shocked me at the time.

IcedVanillaLatte · 22/12/2016 19:58

Thetruthfairy · 22/12/2016 19:58

Family in America.
Love it for a visit but I think I would have major fears for my family if I lived there; maternity pay (lack of), health insurance tied to job, gun laws, cost of higher education, sick pay.
We really do have a good thing over here :-)

SnorkelParka · 22/12/2016 20:00

There are things about the States I used to love, especially culturally, however now 1) lack of gun control and the failure to respond to the massively unneccessary and endless daily loss of life, including shootings by armed officers disproportionally against black people ,and 2) trump would both be reasons enough in their own not to to travel there, let alone live there. Sad.
