I just watched This Morning, normally I avoid it when Holly and Phill aren't on it, but I was curious about this baby nest thing and how this poor baby died.
Am I the only one who took one look at the baby nest and thought that it looked dangerous anyway. It looks very rickity and the top section where the pull down sides are have a gap between them that a baby food or hand could easily become wedged.
I am in no way blaming the parents, but I just think it STILL looks badly designed and dangerous to me.

We had one and I knew about the babies death and continued to use it. I thought it was a well made, sturdy, safe cot. I followed the instructions to the letter and never felt it was a risk.

I've just googled a baby nest and it's a soft nest, what are you talking about? How did the baby die?

The cot is actually called a bed nest Dame :-) Lots of articles in the news about the family this week.

I remember this story coming out just after the death of their little one and panicking as we used a bednest for my son. The official report stated the cot was set up at an unsafe angle with the mattresses higher than was advised, (there is a MAX line on the cot that the mattress should be underneath) the parents got the cot from friends and it didn't need come with instructions. We recieved additional instructions from NCT shortly after reminding us of the importance of following the instructions. Please don't think I'm placing blame, I'm not and can't imagine what these parents have gone through but there's a bit more to it.

We went on to use the Bednest for our second son who was born in a June with no problems.

Ds was a real wriggler they used to laugh in SCBU as he used to wriggler around in his incubator then his half cot thing.

Hind sight's great and we're all perfect parents until we're not.

Oh I remember when this was first in the news - a tragic accident and I can't imagine what the parents have been through.

That said I used a bednest with DC1 and will do so again with DC2.

Presumably they want it on record their other daughter is being blamed for their baby's death by babynest? . That's unforgivable of the company to do that.

Its leg arrangement is a bit weird to my mind.

Either way its a bit rough on the BabyNest to be suffering the rough publicity. Maybe report post to ask admin to change title?

It really is very sturdy if you're ever seen one in real life.

From reading, it seems that the side was zipped down to the halfway position and the baby rolled over and got her head over the edge and it cut off her breathing :( so sad.

It's quite sturdy irl. We used one with our daughter and thought it was great. I've read about the awful incident. However, I wouldn't hesitate to use one again (in accordance with instructions).

I have limited sympathy for the company. They designed the cot with a potentially deadly feature, and have published promotional photos wrongly suggesting that it's safe to leave your baby to sleep with the side half-down.

They're not really a victim in this.

I had one we hired for DD3 after this tragic incident was in the news. The design has since been modified so you can no longer have the side half up; we followed the instructions to the letter and used it for 5 months.

The wood is not thin(around 1cm thick of solid, polished wood) and it is jn no way flimsy. It is tethered to the bed anyway. Personally I found it to be intuitively designed, very practical and a joy to us.

Apparently the baby pushed against the foot of the crib and managed to lever herself on top of the half down side, she came down on it onto her neck but could not get off again, it restricted her airway.

So so sad.

I remember reading about this horrible accident when it happened and looking at the bednest. To be honest any place a baby sleeps can be dangerous if not used properly. People still use cot bumpers and fill cots and Moses baskets with toys and extra blankets etc.

I think midwives and HV need to more than explicit about safer sleep. I met loads of mums who just didn't know the guidelines at baby groups and didn't know the prevalence of SIDS so thought it was so unlikely there's no point in following guidelines. Really scary.

I read the story when I was struggling with newborn ds sleep (or lack of) and considering ago sleeping cot. Sadly, there seems to have been a catalogue of mistakes made due to not having the instructions etc. Cot tilted at too much of an angle, side left partially up, 7 wk old placed to sleep on her front I believe, and left unsupervised.

It did put me off getting one then, even though I would have followed instructions and safe sleeping advice.

I haven't seen anything about the other daughter though

Eek I don't think a 1cm is thick!!! That's what I mean and its not just the side panel I feel looks dodgy, in the op I did say there seems to be a gap at the sides of the lift up flap, which baby arms or legs could become trapped.
