to keep extra item delivered from shop in error?

OK - This is actually my fault, not the shop's error. I will explain:

Ordered three identical multi-aperture photo frames from a well-known department store. Will be given as Xmas presents to relatives. Went to the store to 'click and collect'. When I got home and opened the plastic wrapping there were only two identical boxes in there.

Felt really annoyed that one is missing. Opened one up and put photos in - took ages to resize the pics and fit them but looked ace.

Went back to the store and explained they had only given me two frames. Was quite panicky as only 1 week until Xmas and needed that exact frame as photos printed in sizes to fit it. Also, it's an inconvenient journey to get to the store (live out in sticks). Store Manager gave me 15% off for inconvenience.

Went and collected third frame next day. Got home and unwrapped the remaining two boxes, and........there was TWO in the second box. So now I have FOUR frames.

It may sound silly that I did not open the second box originally, but the boxes were both the same size (quite narrow) and the frame in the first box was wrapped in bubble wrap - whilst the frames on the second were squeezed in, with no protective wrapping at all.

Do I own up and take the fourth frame back, or keep it for myself? I know everyone is going to say take it back probably, but please try to imagine what you would do.

Best to let them know. They may say keep it I would take it back at some point if they require it or ask for a prepaid return label.

I received unordered items in a package and sent them back.

Rubies12345 · 20/12/2016 12:44

and it's their error so I wouldn't bother

No it's not. It's the OPs error, she didn't check the 2nd box.

LuluJakey1 · 20/12/2016 12:44

We had this with Homebase and a Farrow and Ball paint delivery. We got two deliveries and they refused to come back and collect one when I rang. Just charged us for one. Seemed madness to me - over £400 of paint that we paid for half of despite ringing and telling them.

LotsoNumbers · 20/12/2016 12:47

I end3d up with something free from a shop once, I called and tried to pay over the phone but they couldnt accept card payments over the phone so they told me not to worry about it

ohtheholidays · 20/12/2016 13:00

They've already given you a discount OP for your mistake!

I'd ring them and let them know what's happened they're more than likely thank you and tell you to keep the extra one.

LivingInMidnight · 20/12/2016 13:01

Lying so it's a free for all as long as you don't check what's in the box? Blimey.

ZouBisou · 20/12/2016 13:09

It may technically be theft, but a) she didn't set out to steal anything, b) it's a low value item and c) there is very little at stake in terms of risk/reprobation. Yes we can say theft is theft is theft but in reality there are different shades of moral wrongness involved.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 20/12/2016 13:09

Just keep it Cabbage.

pklme · 20/12/2016 14:02

I'd take it back next time I am in the area. Halo

PissFlappage · 20/12/2016 14:05

God, only on MN would people tell you to return it. Bloody hell.

Obviously keep it.

IKEA once delivered us an extra sofa Confused We waited for them to be in touch about it but the call never came. Eight years later, it still looks great Grin

woodhill · 20/12/2016 14:08

I still think being honest in these situations is the best way forward.

MoreThanUs · 20/12/2016 14:17

The reason so many people are saying to keep it is because they think it was the shop's error. If it had been, I too would say keep it, but no way should you when it was your mistake.
You have benefited from a discount too, and now you want to keep something you haven't paid for.
Take it back ASAP and give JL back the item that belongs to them.

ovenchips · 20/12/2016 15:37

It really isn't a life defining decision either way. Make a decision to keep/ return it then move on. It's not worth the headspace.

If it were me, I'm pretty sure I'd keep it purely because of the hassle involved in returning it.

SoupDragon · 20/12/2016 15:40

only on MN would people tell you to return it.

No, I would tell someone to email the company in real life too.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 20/12/2016 15:47

LivingInMidnight, no, did you miss where I said OP should ring the shop to tell them about it and give the option for them to collect it?

Blimey yourself.

MummyStep123 · 20/12/2016 15:50

I think it depends on the type of store, if it's a small local run business I'd take it back, if it's some big chain store then keep it - fo' sho' WinkGrin

FancyPantsDelacroixTheFirst · 20/12/2016 16:01

I would call them and let them know. As others have said, there is a good chance they will say keep it anyway and there is a small chance that customer services have passed the issue over to dispatch, and someone has had an unfair bollocking.

Earlgreywithmilk · 20/12/2016 17:08

Can u live with it or will it be something that will keep u awake at night? If not, keep it for god's sake.
I wouldn't think twice about keeping it I'm afraid, it's definitely not worth my time.

And I wouldn't feel guilty.

MummyStep123 · 20/12/2016 17:17

Same here earlgrey

Deux · 20/12/2016 17:29

Look, you made a mistake by not opening both boxes and made an assumption that there would only be one frame in the other box. Your error.

You are obviously wrestling with this. Me, I would take it back or at the very least phone customer service. Just because I always feel that in these situations there will be some kind of karma further down the line that will leave me worse off.

You know what the right thing to do is, so ring them and explain your mistake. Mea culpa and I reckon they'll thank you for your honesty and tell you to keep it.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 20/12/2016 17:32

Can't believe the people saying you should keep it!

Next time I get a delivery I won't bother opening the box at all but claim to the store that half my order is missing. Sounds fair?

Sallystyle · 20/12/2016 17:45

I would keep it.

Bobkinyoyo · 20/12/2016 17:45

Sounds like a plan pumpus

CaraAspen · 20/12/2016 17:47

"TheWildRumpyPumpus

Nor can I. I certainly wouldn't trust anyone who would advocate such a thing.

DeepanKrispanEven · 20/12/2016 17:58

People need to turn this round:

I (hypothetically) run a business selling things: someone ordered two items, and I duly sent them off. She turns up, claims she only received one, so I gave her another plus a 15% discount as a gesture of goodwill for her inconvenience. Subsequently it turned out that she had received a second box but just hadn't bothered to open it, and in fact she did receive both items. However, she has decided that she fully intends to keep the third item and not pay me for it, because she can't be bothered to bring it back or send payment.

AIBU to think she's taking the piss, and thoroughly dishonest with it?
