to keep extra item delivered from shop in error?

OK - This is actually my fault, not the shop's error. I will explain:

Ordered three identical multi-aperture photo frames from a well-known department store. Will be given as Xmas presents to relatives. Went to the store to 'click and collect'. When I got home and opened the plastic wrapping there were only two identical boxes in there.

Felt really annoyed that one is missing. Opened one up and put photos in - took ages to resize the pics and fit them but looked ace.

Went back to the store and explained they had only given me two frames. Was quite panicky as only 1 week until Xmas and needed that exact frame as photos printed in sizes to fit it. Also, it's an inconvenient journey to get to the store (live out in sticks). Store Manager gave me 15% off for inconvenience.

Went and collected third frame next day. Got home and unwrapped the remaining two boxes, and........there was TWO in the second box. So now I have FOUR frames.

It may sound silly that I did not open the second box originally, but the boxes were both the same size (quite narrow) and the frame in the first box was wrapped in bubble wrap - whilst the frames on the second were squeezed in, with no protective wrapping at all.

Do I own up and take the fourth frame back, or keep it for myself? I know everyone is going to say take it back probably, but please try to imagine what you would do.

Return it. It is not yours to keep. How. An you even ask that? Anyone advising you to keep it has a skewed sense of right and wrong.

Lots of people advocating theft by deception here Hmm

CaraAspen · 20/12/2016 10:46

OP:

"We don't have a lot of spare cash (not a good reason to keep it I know), but we had no plans to have any of photos framed for ourselves, and this would enable us to have some :-)

Fee a bit bad about it though. I may change my mind."

Unbelievable. What you are contemplating is basically theft. Charming.

CookingCabbage · 20/12/2016 10:48

JustAnother - It wasn't deception. It was a genuine mistake on my behalf. I know that doesn't mean I should keep it - right thing to do would be to take it back.

Just because the soldiers are ...blah...blah... does not make what you are planning right. I hate your sort of attitude.

CaraAspen · 20/12/2016 10:49

Yes, so you made a genuine mistake, apparently but now that you have worked it out be HONEST fgs. Grrrrr

JustAnotherPoster00 · 20/12/2016 10:49

Oh just keep it. This big stores are insured for this type of thing

Shall I just pop over to empty your house into a van? I mean youre insured for this type of thing right? Hmm

PotteringAlong · 20/12/2016 10:50

Return it. It was a genuine mistake to start with. Keeping it is theft

CaraAspen · 20/12/2016 10:51

mysistersimone · 20/12/2016 10:51

Keep it. I am sure over the years we all lose out far more than we gain. Merry Christmas

user1480946351 · 20/12/2016 10:52

Meh, I'd keep it.

FrizzBombDelight · 20/12/2016 10:55

In a Boots order once I had an extra moisturiser worth about £25. I emailed them and they said to keep it! I would ring to let them know to keep your conscience clear and let them know you are not willing to travel but will post it back if they pay for the postage. Pretty sure they will say to keep it!

Introvertedbuthappy · 20/12/2016 10:57

You should really have checked before going through the faff of going all the way to the store. Basically what you are advocating in keeping it is lying to a store about not receiving goods and keeping the spare, i.e. theft.
When you next are going in that direction I would take it back and explain the mistake.

Mirandawest · 20/12/2016 10:57

Get in touch with the shop and explain what has happened and see what they say. If it had been their fault it would be a bit different but it was your own fault here

viques · 20/12/2016 10:58

Someone I know made a huge fuss at M&S when they emailed her to tell her she had had all her delivery. One item was missing but no note on the delivery information to say to follow so she steamed in during her lunch break , they said it had been delivered, she said no, item now out of stock. M&S apologised, gave refund and extra voucher for inconvenience. Friend went back to work. Parcel on her desk...........

CookingCabbage · 20/12/2016 11:01

Is it right to expect them to pay for the postage though? I think if I am going to be honest I should be competely fair. Or....just stay quiet!

Interesting to see how this has really split opinion. I thought more people would have said 'take it back'. Being on Mumsnet really gives you an insight into true human nature!

Still undecided - but leaning towards taking it back, despite temptation.

A couple of years ago I ordered a garden boot scrapper as a Christmas present. Box arrived, it appeared a little larger and heavier than expected, I opened the box and there was two! It would seem the "picker" at the warehouse hadn't realised that two items were in the box and they were meant to open and split them. This was a major high street retailer - I kept the extra one and it was given as a gift to someone else.

You must feel very proud.

I had this once - ordered bedding oline from John Lewis for collection and they sent extra pillow cases in the order. Wasnt a huge amount of money and definitely their error. I phoned them and they thanked me but told me to keep them.

So my advice is to phone and see. They might say bring it back, they might say don't worry.

Sonders · 20/12/2016 11:17

Just call the store and tell them what happened, they will probably tell you to keep it anyway.

By keeping the frame you're rewarding their great customer service (not questioning what you had delivered and also giving you a discount) with theft.

I honestly can't believe anyone would suggest the retailer covers cost for posting back - it's OP's fault (even though it was an honest mistake) they don't have the product in the first place.

CaraAspen · 20/12/2016 11:19

That is the thing. IF you are honest and contact the store, they will probably tell you to keep the item. Superb irony, huh?

ZouBisou · 20/12/2016 11:24

I'd find an email address for either the store or the customer service department if it's a big chain, and email them saying what has happened and would they like you to return it to the store after Xmas when you have time. See what comes of that, I bet they'll just say keep it or not reply at all.

SoupDragon · 20/12/2016 11:27

I would phone or email the store and explain.

Katy07 · 20/12/2016 11:30

Drop them a line and explain, see what they say - chances are they'll just say to keep it, but if not they'll probably send you an SAE to post it back to them.
^^ This. That way your conscience is clear. You'll probably still end up keeping it but at least it will be with permission.
