Latest time for hotel breakfast

If a hotel breakfast is served until 10am is it acceptable to stay later than that?

I leave by 10am but there are always people who turn up 15 minutes before and stay well past 10am...

What's the rule?

I worked in hotels. It was always last food at 10am in the one I worked in. Buffet styles wouldn't have the buffet topped up. Ones where you order wouldn't take an orders. The room didn't have to be clear of people by 10 though.

No rule ,but I would rather not eat my breakfast while the staff are clearing tables around me and the buffet has run out of the good stuff.

Anyway, if you eat your breakfast at 10 that means you will have to miss out on lunch! And also half the day has gone.

I'm not sure it's defined in the constitution, but mostly in restaurants/bars etc the 'served until' means you can order up until that point but can sit and eat/drink what you already have for a little while afterwards. So they'd probably start packing up the buffet at 10 (and stop adding to it about half an hour before) but if you arrive at 5 to 10, you can have your pick of what's left and sit and eat it.

That's just what I would assume, I've never worked in a hotel but that was what we did when I worked in a cafe.

Why would you need to miss out on lunch? You would just have it a bit later, surely. And half the day really hasn't gone by 10:00am

I'm with the other posters on this one, last food will be served at 10:00 but it doesn't mean you have to leave the room at that time.

If half your day is gone by 10am then it sounds to me like you're just wasting the evenings by spending them in bed!

We stayed at a hotel recently where last serving for breakfast was 8.30am - I don't mind in the week but on a Sunday? We'd been at a wedding the night before and woke hungry at 9. Total pain!

Back on the topic, I wouldn't go 15 mins before they close, but only because I'd be worried about what they'd run out of.

Me too. I love breakfast buffets and would hate to arrive to one with only the dregs left.

I work in a five star hotel. Breakfast finishes at quarter to ten checkout is at 11. People have jobs to do which revolve around these times

I have this issue every time we stay in a hotel - the teenage DCs and DH want a lovely lie-in in a nice hotel bed while I'm chomping at the bit thinking "We're wasting the day! The nice sausages will have gone! What if they're out of Earl Grey tea!". I sort of wish breakfasts finished earlier and then they'd have to get up.

If you're staying in a hotel I guess you're going for a holiday break. Not many people want to get up at the crack of dawn on a relaxing break so it's fine to go just before 10. They usually have a lot of food leftover.

If half your day is gone at 10am then you must go to bed at 6pm and wake up at 2am! :S

10am last order

So 9.40am in restaurant and ordered and eating by 10am is fine and head out around 10.30am

On holiday eating times for us would be roughly 9-10am breakfast, 3pm lunch, 9-10pm dinner. Many hot countries don't even start serving dinner until after 9pm so you don't want to start breakfast and lunch too early, plus your still full early as late dinner

I will never understand people who think that having a lie-in and relaxing ON HOLIDAY is "wasting" a day. Rest is important as well as seeing all the sights!

Wherever we've been, it is just that they stop taking orders AFTER 10am, and stop refilling the buffet breakfast at 10am. You can still go in at 9:55am and order, get food, etc.

Re the tidying up around you - well they are constantly clearing tables anyway, as and when people arrive and leave. Never had them clear the buffet away at that time - they must have some grace period after - maybe start clearing away at 10:30 I guess.

Re wasting the day... 10am isn't that late for breakfast in a hotel, bearing mind you need to be washed and dressed beforehand. So you'd be up no later than 9ish. Definitely not late for lunch: just push everything back a bit.

So for me on a normal work day:
Up at 7am
Breakfast (very quick, on the go) around 7:45am
Lunch at 12:30am (in a school so early)
Dinner at 7pm
Bed around 10:30pm

On a hotel relaxing weekend:
Up at 8:30am
Breakfast around 9:30am (if finishes at 10aml would push back a bit if later finish)
Lunch: 2-3pm
Dinner: 8pm
Bed: later

I don't feel like I'd miss out on lunch eating brekkie at 10. I eat if I'm hungry and not if I'm not. I'd probably just have a snack in the afternoon or an earlier evening meal.

If a hotel breakfast says that it ends at 10 I would try and get there at 9.45 at the latest but would expect all or most of the selection to be available if it is a buffet, or for them to cook to order if that's what they do. I wouldn't expect to have to leave by 10 but wouldn't be surprised or annoyed if they started clearing things away at that time.

On holiday we tend to have breakfast at 9-10, lunch at 3-4 pm and dinner around 9-10, but that is usually in Spain where those times are totally normal for the locals anyway.

Thanks all.

The 10am bit has really ruffled some feathers, it was just an example really. Seems like the majority think it's fine to go towards the end. I always worried that I would be holding the staff up from other jobs as Glinda mentions.
