To expect to be informed by school?

My son has been to a trampoline place with school today and at around half past 2 landed badly which resulted in his tooth puncturing his inner lip. He bled a lot and was seen by a first aider at the trompline place that said the wound may need stitches (although I don't think it does).

After this he was taken back to school and then to the after school club that he attends every week until half past 7 when I collected him like normal. It was only then I was told about this injury.

AIBU to think school should have contacted me as soon as possible after the incident so I could have collected him and decided if it needs further treatment or at least given the poor thing some pain killers?

How old is he? Does he wish that you'd been contacted?

He's 12 but has special needs so mentally much younger. And yes as soon as I picked him up he asked for calpol and an ice lolly to suck as it's so sore.

Ah bless him. Then no, YANBU. I can imagine that a primary school would have phoned home but a secondary might not...

Ouch poor thing that looks sore. Not sure there would have been much you could have done but might be worth asking the pharmacist if there's anything you can do to help it heal and stop it becoming a big mouth ulcer.

I was going to say you were unreasonable but actually I think a heads up from the school would have been appropriate

It's a special needs school by the way primary and secondary school together. They were aware he was in pain as he couldn't eat his tea.

Just feel awful that he sat for hours in pain when I could have collected him and sorted him out. He stays for an activity not for childcare and they know I'm home. I suppose it's parental guilt we all get our (not so little) babies get injured.

Yes you should have been informed.

It is an injury that caused him pain & they thought he may need stitches ( I get calls to 'just let me know' about injuries even if no treatment is required).

I wouldn't be happy.

Is he in school tomorrow? Can you go into the office and say:-

"I'm just wondering why I wasn't called yesterday?"

He is yes but he gets a taxi to school and back. It's not local. I'm planning on phoning to ask, even if they didn't think he needed to go home they could have phoned to ask permission for calpol.

I did yes Daisy however the after school club is the residential team so it's different staff then the school team. They thought I knew and was shocked when I said I didn't.

I would have phoned you. (I'm a primary teacher). I'm very surprised that no-one did to be honest.

I would talk to someone about it tomorrow if I were you.

YANBU. DD2 once got sent home from school with a note saying they thought she had broken her wrist at morning break and that I should "take her to A & E as a matter of priority."

The 7.30 after school is because the school have some children stay residential. My son likes football and we're keen to encourage him to socialise so he stays for that. However he isn't yet settled enough to stay overnight with the other children after football and tbh I would rather he didn't so the compromise to allow him to access football without him staying in the residential unit is that I collect him at half 7 before the other children settle down for the night.

I think our school would have phoned for that, however, as it looks pretty ok i'd agree it doesn't need stitching or anything, and that if he wanted to stay at the afterschool activity i'd have left mine there.
but yes, i'd ask that in future they let me know that kind of thing.

Yanbu, if the first aider thought medical attention may be needed, they should've called you so you could make that decision (only exception would be if it was so close to normal pick up that it wouldn't make a difference, but that's clearly not the case). Him being in too much pain to eat is another thing that should've triggered a call.

I would also want to make sure that it has been written up as an accident both by the school and the trampoline place.

There's been a lot of press recently about injuries kids are having at trampoline places so I'm guessing that maybe if they can get away with not recording one it's one less bad stat for the overall figures.

I'd also be worried about staff from school not recording it because it then makes you wonder what else you're not being told about... Or if they don't want knock on effects on their health and safety reviews before doing trips or I don't know what other reasons they might have...

But yes, really not on of them not to bother telling you. It's also easy with something like that to concentrate on the wound and the blood - how is his tooth? Has it become wobbly or sore or anything?

Oh dear OP, they really should have told you.

My DS (also SN but at mainstream school) fell down some stairs at school and I also wasn't called. Turned up at 5:30 to collect him from after school club to find him hobbling.

Luckily I'm a first aider so I strapped him up and dosed him with calpol to see how it is in the morning, but it's the second time he fallen at school and twisted his ankle (there is hypermobility in the famiy which they know about) and I've not been told!

Hope your DS is in less pain soon. Lots of lollies to help with the pain and for being brave! Definitely check they've recorded it and ask them to notify you in future.
