To think well done to the actors standing up to try to prevent trump from entering the white house

Well done to them, they are risking their popularity in order to try to help keep someone unfit from office and a change to the political landscape that would be detrimental to the country.

Where is the same for UK actors standing up against brexit?

Oh dear

mothertruck3r · 20/12/2016 12:51

How would you feel if Hilary had won and pro-Republican boat makers or workers from another industry released a video urging people to vote against her and urging them to "use their conscience"? What qualifications and political experience do these Hollywood actors have that gives them the knowledge to lecture people on what they should or shouldn't do and why should the plebs listen to them? Don't you think they should respect the result of a democratic election even if they don't like it? Not everything is about Hollywood actors and their holy cows.

The video is just so patronising and cringeworthy and will probably make more people side with Trump tbh.

jdoe8 · 20/12/2016 13:16

How would you feel if Hilary had won
Hillary did win the popular vote, that is the whole point of it!

OP posts:
SirChenjin · 20/12/2016 13:17

Hilary did win - she got almost 2 million more votes than Trump.

I'll flip that round - do you think the Trump supporters would go quietly if he'd won 2 million votes more than Clinton but she was President Elect? Of course they wouldn't.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 20/12/2016 13:22

I really need to know what tobogganist was supposed to be

I cant stand Trump but i dont think it would end well if their "democratic process" wasnt followed through on

Badly worded but you get the jist

mothertruck3r · 20/12/2016 13:26

But she didn't win because the election was not based on who wins the popular vote but who wins the electoral vote. If Hilary had won the electoral college vote and Trump the popular vote would you be complaining that Trump won!?

mothertruck3r · 20/12/2016 13:29

I'll flip that round - do you think the Trump supporters would go quietly if he'd won 2 million votes more than Clinton but she was President Elect? Of course they wouldn't.

Hilary supporters would be telling them to respect democracy and to live with the result!

treaclesoda · 20/12/2016 13:32

I think that it's admirable to stand up for your beliefs. But when I see groups of actors coming together like this it just all feels a bit...Team America:World Police.

Donald Trump will be releasing the panthers on them next... Wink

treaclesoda · 20/12/2016 13:36

I hate the outcome of the election btw, I despise Trump and I find him sinister. But I believe in democracy even when I find the results unpleasant. Let's hope this is the starting point for someone coming up with an opposition that can actually get elected next time (assuming the USA still exists in four years and Trump hasn't started WW3)

Oliversmumsarmy · 20/12/2016 13:39

Wasn't that the worry with Hillary.

BoneyBackJefferson · 20/12/2016 13:45

jdoe8 and SirChen

But the system that is in place isn't based on how many votes but on the College system. I agree that the system is flawed

InfiniteSheldon · 20/12/2016 13:45

Those of you saying Trump didn't win that Hilary got two million more votes than him. Do you understand the US electoral process and why it's set up like it is? If so do you still really think she 'won' . She didn't she lost, mainly due to a sneering elitism voters hated, much like the actors sneering elitism.

SirChenjin · 20/12/2016 13:48

Hilary supporters would be telling them to respect democracy and to live with the result!

That wasn't my question. Do you think they would take it quietly or not? Clue: the answer is "not".

Viviennemary · 20/12/2016 13:50

Trump was elected. He will be President. Shame some folk didn't like it. All those rich stars did nothing to help Hillary's campaign. In fact I think they hindered it. If people didn't want Trump they should have voted for Hillary. Shame she was such a terrible candidate.

SirChenjin · 20/12/2016 13:50

Yes Boney, I understand the system gave the world President Trump rather than the individual will of the people.

WrongTrouser · 20/12/2016 13:51

Do you not believe in democracy OP? What are you suggesting in it's place?

Clinton has held high office, Trump has no experience at all.
From that video the point they are making seems to be that Trump is not qualified by their own criteria for the job.
They aren't asking republicans to vote a democrat into the top job as far as I can tell, the next president will still be a republican. From what I've read there are a lot of republicans who do not want Trump representing them - because the only person Trump represents is Trump. So maybe there is a possibility some of the 37 will take the risk of trying to change history.
If Trump had lost the electoral collage but got more votes maybe he would have tried going after this but really, he couldn't use the same argument with a straight face. I genuinely don't think he ever expected to win though.

Andrewofgg · 20/12/2016 14:10

Are we expected to believe that if Hillary Clinton had won the popular vote the actors would be saying That's all right then and not protest?

Trump terrifies me; but he won constitutionally - as did the Brexiteers here.

BoneyBackJefferson · 20/12/2016 14:35

SirChenjin

But like many systems it seems that it is supported until the"people" don't get what they want.

WrongTrouser · 20/12/2016 14:38

Those of you who think its okay to stand in rhe way of the democratically elected candidate taking office, please can you explain what system you want to replace democracy. Because we will need something else if we destroy democracy.

What do you want? - restricted franchise to middle class graduates under 55 only? a military dictatorship? government by big business? What do you suggest?

Pannnn · 20/12/2016 14:39

Me. Lord of Everything.

And everyone would be happy. Esp me.

TulipsInAJug · 20/12/2016 14:42

If trump is stopped that may help to stop brexit or get a revote.

What a bizarre statement.

Trump and Brexit are not related; are not interdependent, and are certainly the same thing.

InfiniteSheldon · 20/12/2016 14:44

Only actors, luvvies and perhaps Guardian readers should be allowed to vote. None of those nasty, dirty working people. Lily Allen and Bob Geldof should also get the final say unless those two paragons are happy no decision should be final.

TulipsInAJug · 20/12/2016 14:44

Completely agree with PP who say that these narcissistic, privileged elitist celebrities are only doing Trump a big favour by doing this.

What absolute twats they are.
