I can't ask this, can I?!

My neighbours parents have come for Christmas. Lovely for them, but all they do is stand outside smoking - and their patio is basically underneath my bedroom window. For the past 3 nights I have been kept up til 2-3am by the security light blazing, them gabbing away at the top of their voices, and I can't open my window as my bedroom fills with cigarette smoke. And then it starts again at 8am.

I really can't ask them to smoke elsewhere can I?

Just say to neighbours can they ask their relatives to be quiet when smoking outside after 11 as sound carries

The smoke it isn't ice but not the end of the world.

Can security light be aimed slightly different angle by prodding it with a large brush

Comedyboobs

I was going to suggest that ()

Why would you want your window open at night in December? If you're in the UK then YABU. It's cold enough with all the windows closed and the heating on!
If you close your window that will solve the smoke issue and lessen the noise. There's not much you can do about the security light. Our neighbours ones go off every time a cat goes past.
I wouldn't say anything personally. Once you start complaining to neighbours you will find that there are minor things that bother them about how you live and they won't hold back.

Apologies flappys Xmas Grin

DurdleDurdle · 18/12/2016 23:20

I'd lean out the window when they were disturbing you and politely ask if they mind keeping the noise down as you are trying to sleep. Then you could ask if they could avoid smoking under your window. You never know they might not mind at all.

Smoke is a health and safety issue.

Hmm
haveacupoftea · 19/12/2016 00:24

I'd just close the window and the curtains tbh.

haveacupoftea · 19/12/2016 00:24

Or leave the window open and have really loud sex. That would put them off sitting outside!

I've just woken DH by actually snorting at ontheup's naked smiling suggestion Grin
Please, I beg of you - do this!

Approaching the issue directly and honestly with your neighbours/ their visitors would be your best bet, but if there's reason not to feel able to do so/ it's too awkward (understandable), and you do choose to go down the passive aggressive route:

At next night-time disturbance

  1. Suddenly fling bedroom windows wide open
  1. Lean out, rapidly and loudly taking in deep lungfuls of air, whilst making hyperventilating-type/ having-difficulty-breathing-type groans...
  1. Turn away from window a few times, loudly reassuring bed partner (real or imaginary!) "It was another bad asthma attack / another allergic reaction to nicotine"

(btw, disclaimer: they can both be terrifying in RL, and I'm definitely not minimising that).

  1. Speculate (loudly) with bed partner (real or imaginary) that there must be smoke leaking in from those wretched gaps in the window frame...
  1. If PITA visitors haven't already fled in embarrassed horror, then explain (whilst smiling apologetically), that you're sorry to have to ask, but would they mind awfully smoking elsewhere, as you react severely to asthma/ allergy triggers...

Good luck Xmas Wink

I would definitely have to say something.
Keeping you awake with chatter outside your bedroom window until 3am is bloody rude.
Asking them politely, to keep the noise down as you need your sleep - is not unreasonable in the slightest.

PickledCauliflower · 19/12/2016 06:10

I often have by bedroom window open during December too - unless it's freezing (and it hasn't been recently). I like my bedroom to be chilly so that I can wrap up under the bed covers :)
