Is my Christmas dinner unreasonable?

shivermytimbers · 18/12/2016 14:24

I have just done a big chunk of the Xmas food shop today. I'll be cooking for 10 including PILs who haven't had Xmas lunch with us before. I luuurve Christmas dinner and all the leftovers so tend to make a bit of a feast. DH has happily tucked into said feast for many years. I'm doing...
Smoked salmon starter
Turkey
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Roasties
Parsnips
Sprouts with bacon
Red cabbage
Gravy
Christmas pudding with brandy butter and cream

Apparently, according to DH, PILs will not be happy because 1) pigs in blankets are a bit common 2) sprouts shouldn't have bacon anywhere near them 3) starters are unnecessary 4) it really is too much food to be able to enjoy it.

My response was that I've bought the food, I will cook the food and if they don't eat it I will happily consume the leftovers. Therefore - tough bloody luck if they don't like it!!!

I know I'm right... aren't I??? Grin

Your choice but why the sprouts? Think of the after effects.

murakamilove · 19/12/2016 18:51

Did your marry the Grinch by any chance?

Lynnm63 · 19/12/2016 19:08

Rhoda I lurve cooking so when we redid the kitchen I had a 1200 range (900 and 300) and two 600 built in ovens. I bake the Ham the night before. It does feel like a canteen and I do occasionally swear a la Gordon Ramsey 😳

WildRoses · 19/12/2016 19:09

Sounds beautiful. I organise everything to do with Christmas, presents, wrapping, shopping, dinner, preparing, cooking, cleaning and washing up. 3dc, 3 dsc and dh do nothing. I also work until 1am every Christmas eve. By the time I've done everything, I can't even face Xmas dinner. I would absolutely love it if someone made me that dinner and I had nothing to do other than eat it. They are lucky to have you OP. So lucky. They should appreciate your hard work and generosity. No sprouts because none of us like them

Barbarians!

My sprouts have been gently simmering since October, and should be al dente by 2.00pm on December 25th.

Kellyhoddinott1979 · 19/12/2016 19:15

Does your hubby actually want to eat on Christmas Day??? 🙄

Postchildrenpregranny · 19/12/2016 19:18

No bread sauce ?I love bread sauce ...

cloudspotter · 19/12/2016 19:20

This would bring out the devil in me. I would turn it into an opportunity to poke fun at the Great British class system.

Why not be forewarned and forearmed, turn the tables on dh, since its essentially him that's the problem, not his poor parents?

Without any warning, innocently drop in some choice comments such as:

"dh loves these horrible sausage things. I find them a bit naff myself, but then I suppose that's Christmas isn't it?"

"I don't know why it's so fashionable to put bacon with sprouts, but I tried it and by God they're good"

I'm sure you get the idea. It would entertain me to at least think of these revenge ideas, even if I actually didn't do them.

Also, you could think of ways to embarrass him further. For example by putting a whoopee cushion on his chair, or giving a singing trout as a gift. Think of the most genuinely tasteless things and make a point of presenting them unannounced.

At least by making fun of it, you flush out any stress or anxiety that might otherwise spoil your day.

Daydream007 · 19/12/2016 19:21

YANBU. Sounds perfect to me

Grilledaubergines · 19/12/2016 19:21

All your menus sound delicious.

Sad to see that no one has piped up with "mmm well, the menu does seem heavy on the carbs and there is an excessive amount of protein and enjoyment in your menu".

Bloody tuck in and enjoy every morsel!

Lindsxxx · 19/12/2016 19:36

avamiah · 19/12/2016 19:42

Sounds lovely .
Ignore them.
Enjoy .

Drama123 · 19/12/2016 19:42

OP, I'd happily come to dinner at yours.
Where I'm going, ILs are charging per head 😮😕

nazzina · 19/12/2016 19:44

I think that's quite a simple offering. I do smoked salmon and prawn coctails in glasses for starter. Everything you mentioned plus roasted butternut squash, roast ham, roast beef and homemade stuffing.

For dessert I would never just do Christmas pudding as so many people dont like it. I have it as an option with cheesecake, roulade, ice cream and trifle.

So in my opnion your chriustmas dinner is quite minimalist.

cheval · 19/12/2016 19:46

Pigs in blankets are the hIghpoint of meal here. Never have enough of them. Proud to be considered common!

FurryLittleTwerp · 19/12/2016 19:46

I wouldn't put bacon with the sprouts as well as with the pigs, but that's just me.

They sound rude - common actually Grin as well-brought-up folk would graciously accept & eat all...

BoffinMum · 19/12/2016 19:47

What no roasted ox, suckling pig with apple in its mouth, and mahoosive carp swimming in a dish? That's no Christmas `dinner at all, I tell you Wink

EddieStobbart · 19/12/2016 19:47

I hope all this ham is naice.

BoffinMum · 19/12/2016 19:48

CherryCoke, what what? Tell us more about what happened with the dogs.

Y'see, this is why we need MNet. How would we know the dangers of chestnuts otherwise?
