Is my Christmas dinner unreasonable?

shivermytimbers · 18/12/2016 14:24

I have just done a big chunk of the Xmas food shop today. I'll be cooking for 10 including PILs who haven't had Xmas lunch with us before. I luuurve Christmas dinner and all the leftovers so tend to make a bit of a feast. DH has happily tucked into said feast for many years. I'm doing...
Smoked salmon starter
Turkey
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Roasties
Parsnips
Sprouts with bacon
Red cabbage
Gravy
Christmas pudding with brandy butter and cream

Apparently, according to DH, PILs will not be happy because 1) pigs in blankets are a bit common 2) sprouts shouldn't have bacon anywhere near them 3) starters are unnecessary 4) it really is too much food to be able to enjoy it.

My response was that I've bought the food, I will cook the food and if they don't eat it I will happily consume the leftovers. Therefore - tough bloody luck if they don't like it!!!

I know I'm right... aren't I??? Grin

Sorry, just noticed that you do have red cabbage. We also have leeks in sauce with cheesy breadcrumbs and I notice that there is no bread sauce (apologies if somebody else has said this, I've not been able to read all posts).

If you are cooking (and you enjoy doing it) I suggest that it is your right to choose the menu. And as for pigs in blankets being common, you can point out that Waitrose sell them at Christmas. Enough said.

voddiekeepsmesane · 19/12/2016 18:22

Wow ...just wow. Really am bowled over by the amount of families (mainly DH/DP or PILs) that are just rude, obnoxious, entitled GITS around Christmas. I would so not put up with the kind of shit that some people do. I really don't know why more people don't use the MN "did you mean to be that rude?" line cos over the years I have and things like this DO NOT happen twice with me.

Batsh1tcrazy · 19/12/2016 18:22

If they think yours is to much they should cone to my mil there will be roughly 7 adults 2 children 1 is 10 one is 7 a toddler aged 1 and a 7 month old baby our starts are a choice of melon, crackers and pate or prawn cocktail our main is roast tatties mashed tatties sprouts other veg meat is duck gammon and turkey dessert is Christmas pud, gateau or ice cream followed by a cheese board 😂 I love Christmas dinner

Lozzamas · 19/12/2016 18:25

We are having
Xmas day 1:30
Chicken
Beef
Yorkshires
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Roast potatoes
Roast Parsnips
Carrots
Petite pois
Cauliflower
Broccoli
Runner beans
Sprouts with nothing added
Mashed swede
Cranberry sauce
Cheese sauce
Horseradish
Chicken gravy
Beef gravy
All help yourself - don't take what you don't want.
Dessert
Xmas pud
Apple pie or chocolate pudding
Custard
Brandy butter,
Cream
Coffee and mints
Supper
Self Carve Ham, cold beef and chicken, sausage rolls,
Chesses, crackers, pickles, coleslaw
Breads, salads, Xmas cake, mince pies, chocolate log, trifle -pots of tea.
Again buffet - so sit up at table or take a sandwich worth to the T.V. On a plate.
Then we do it again Boxing Day with Pork and Turkey so change horseradish and yorkshires for apple sauce and crackling - otherwise same format different guests. Then BH Tues my lot hoover up the leftovers - lots of bubble and squeak and cold meats!!
Don't do starters - no room in fridge or stomach, pigs are not eaten by all, but most of the kids have more of those than anything else, my veg is unadulterated add your own cheese sauce and paprika if you like, no bacon in sprouts as some of my guests are verging on being vegetarian and wouldn't want bacon. I have a tonne of warming plates ala Chinese banquettes with tea lights to keep it all warm for the duration- and about 10 sauce boats that matching the dinner service / only get used at Christmas!!
I think your menu sounds very elegant and as expected for Christmas O.P. I have too many veg at mine - but that's due to everyone having a different favourite and a number of guests who eat veggies but not much or any meat.

RhodaBull · 19/12/2016 18:25

Lynnm63 - how on earth do you cook turkey, roast beef and yorkshire pudding and a gammon? You must live in a restaurant or works canteen to have enough ovens!

Haven't read full thread so sorry if it's been mentioned, but I think the term "pigs in blankets" is a bit johnny come lately. It was always "sausages wrapped in bacon" when I was growing up. I think pigs in blankets belongs in the same category as "roasties" and on a different subject, "uni" (uggghhhhh).

IHaventStoppedCravingYet · 19/12/2016 18:28

Sounds like a pretty standard and very lovely Christmas dinner to me. And pigs in blankets are one of the very best bits! My family would be not happy if we didn't have them. I have no idea why anybody be would think they were even a little bit common.

rslsys · 19/12/2016 18:28

Rare Breed MOONBEAMS CLASSIC Gloucester Old Spot Chipolata Sausages

wrapped in

Waitrose Organic Hand Seasoned & Dry Cured Italian Pancetta

Nothing common there . . .

voddiekeepsmesane · 19/12/2016 18:30

OH dear Rhoda I am so " johnny come lately " I say pigs in blankets, roasties and uni. Shame on me sooooo common I am Hmm

HoneyBeeMum1 · 19/12/2016 18:33

Your menu sounds absolutely yum OP. There is enough food there to satisfy anyone, even if they don't like some of it.

I don't do a starter for Christmas lunch. We have the smoked salmon for breakfast, along with scrambled egg and bucks fizz (I expect some people think that is common! 😋).

As for pigs in blankets, I prefer my bacon and chipolatas cooked separately, otherwise they go a bit soggy. That is probably my fault though.

Brussels sprouts are the devil's haemorrhoids, but they are traditional and must be included for that reason...

Have a great Christmas. I am sure your in-laws will love their lunch, even if they do think it is a bit 'common'.

MrsMattBomer · 19/12/2016 18:38

Pigs in blankets are common? If he thinks that way you need to LTB.

Pigs in blankets are amazing and I have bought 12 packets of them. I don't even care how retro or common they are, they are DELIGHTFUL.

And YY to sprouts with bacon too. They are one of the best things Dame Nigella has ever recommended in one of her books.

Bluesrunthegame · 19/12/2016 18:39

The OP's Christmas dinner is fabbo! Please can I come and have some?

I believe that anyone who calls anyone or anything "common" is in fact common. It's a ghastly, horrible thing to say, ExDP's family said it a lot, which is how I know.

AngryGinger · 19/12/2016 18:39

Sounds fabulous to me!! I look forward to my dinner on xmas day, thought that was pretty common. What did DH hope to gain from telling you that his family wouldn't like your offerings.

RhodaBull · 19/12/2016 18:39

Just read most of thread and there are loads of people cooking three joints of meat. HOW?????

I can barely fit a turkey in my oven, then use second oven (v small) for roast potatoes, parsnips, pigs in blankets (ok, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em!) and I'm pouring sweat and huffing and puffing as it is. I think I'd have a nervous breakdown if there was a hog on a spit in the garden, spatchcock chicken on bbq and rib of beef roasting on the fire in the sitting room.

Farmmummy · 19/12/2016 18:41

We 10 of us are having:

Carrot and parsnip mash
Roasted carrot and parsnip
Cheesy Leeks
Red cabbage & apple cooked in pomegranate
Gravy

Red Velvet Roulade
Blackberry and poached pear pavlova

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 19/12/2016 18:42

If pigs in blankets are common, then call me Waynetta. I love them. Like proper love then.

AngryGinger · 19/12/2016 18:42

They'd hate our house - we have turkey, beef, ham and Yorkshire puddings to go along with the usual stuff. And all served in the. Idle of the table in serving dishes so that people can help themselves to as much, or as little as they think they might enjoy.

Farmmummy · 19/12/2016 18:42

Argh forgot the pigs in blankets and the cheese board Xmas Blush

AngryGinger · 19/12/2016 18:43

The middle**

clarehhh · 19/12/2016 18:45

My menu similar with more sauces bread, cranberry and rum butter.Serve in dishes or make their portions smaller?

Batsh1tcrazy · 19/12/2016 18:47

My mil has a huge cooker with two large ovens and a grill. Most cooking of meat is done on Christmas eve

KayTee87 · 19/12/2016 18:47

Just a normal amount. We do;

Sweet potato & butternut squash soup

Turkey joint cooked in oranges
Gammon joint cooked in coke, glazed in treacle
Sirloin of beef
Pigs in blankets
Carrots
Parsnips
Sprouts
Sweetcorn
Cauliflower cheese
Mash
Roasties
Two different gravies

Whatever kind of cheesecake I fancy making that year.

It is ridiculous but we love to have a bit of everything and means there's something for everyone. This year we have a 5 month old baby so decided it would be too much work and going to my mums. Really wish we were still doing it though, we'd have managed somehow.

murakamilove · 19/12/2016 18:48

Sounds good -
We have:
Turkey
Pigs in blankets
Roast & mash pots
Yorkshires
Cauliflower cheese
Broccoli
Asparagus
Brussels sprouts with pancetta

Roast parsnips
Root mash
Peas & mange tout
Sauces & home made gravy
Stuffing

Absolutely no room for starters or dessert! Got 12 coming this year & can't wait!
Merry Christmas everyone. 🎄🎄🎄

I don't know why pigs in blankets might be 'common'. They never featured in my childhood (Ireland) so maybe they are particularly English? Or a new invention? Probably the nicest part of Christmas dinner though! Tastier than turkey.
