Is my Christmas dinner unreasonable?

shivermytimbers · 18/12/2016 14:24

I have just done a big chunk of the Xmas food shop today. I'll be cooking for 10 including PILs who haven't had Xmas lunch with us before. I luuurve Christmas dinner and all the leftovers so tend to make a bit of a feast. DH has happily tucked into said feast for many years. I'm doing...
Smoked salmon starter
Turkey
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Roasties
Parsnips
Sprouts with bacon
Red cabbage
Gravy
Christmas pudding with brandy butter and cream

Apparently, according to DH, PILs will not be happy because 1) pigs in blankets are a bit common 2) sprouts shouldn't have bacon anywhere near them 3) starters are unnecessary 4) it really is too much food to be able to enjoy it.

My response was that I've bought the food, I will cook the food and if they don't eat it I will happily consume the leftovers. Therefore - tough bloody luck if they don't like it!!!

I know I'm right... aren't I??? Grin

pigs in blankets are a bit common

They didn't say that, did they? They sound delightful.

WTF do they think happens? You bite into one a fag pops out of the side of your mouth and the wine turns to Special Brew?

HeCantBeSerious · 18/12/2016 14:41

Doesn't sound like much veg to me.

We have:

Turkey
Ham
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Vegetarian parsnip roulade
Roast spuds
Roast parsnips
Cauliflower cheese
Broccoli
Carrots
Peas
Gravy
Bread sauce
Cranberry sauce

Xmas pud
Non-Xmas pudding

Coffee and mints

And a cheeseboard for later.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 18/12/2016 14:42

I read your OP like Confused - who doesn't have a starter? Your DH needs to chill and take his pent-up regressive tension elsewhere.

HeCantBeSerious · 18/12/2016 14:42

Forgot sprouts! (No bacon.)

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/12/2016 14:42

The petty side of me, says to serve them dinner with a running commentary.

"Oh, I wont give you sprouts because it has bacon with it. DH says you dont like sprouts and bacon."

"Oh, sorry, DH said you think pigs in blankets are common, so I wont give you any."

"Oh, you dont need a started do you. DH said you wouldnt."

Just to annoy him.

Soubriquet · 18/12/2016 14:42

We are having...

Roast turkey
Roast beef
Yorkie puds
Roast potatoes
Peas
Carrots
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Gravy

No starter and don't know about desert yet

Sparlklesilverglitter · 18/12/2016 14:43

Looks like a perfectly normal amount to me

Pigs in blankets common, stand them in the naughty corner!

Here we do smoked salmon & scrambled egg breakfast then a few sweets. Dinner about 5pm turkey, pigs in blankets, stuffing, parsnip, carrots, sprouts gravy and red cabbage.
Then the dessert pavlova as we don't like xmas pud
Then late evening with the tv we have cheese and port

HeCantBeSerious · 18/12/2016 14:43

who doesn't have a starter?

We don't. Total waste of tummy space. It takes us all afternoon/evening to eat main and pudding!

Randytortoise · 18/12/2016 14:45

They would hate my house then I have everything on your list plus
Yorkshire pudding
Apple sauce
Mash potatoes
Roasted carrots
Broccoli a day cauliflower

wifeyhun · 18/12/2016 14:46

YANBU sounds good.

Pigs in blanket are common? WTF? Hmm

talksensetome · 18/12/2016 14:46

Sounds standard to me although short on the veg sides. Your dh is being an arse.

ShelaghTurner · 18/12/2016 14:46

Sounds bloody lovely. We don't have a starter but I'm not going to refuse one if given, especially if it's salmon!

And tbh, as long as you have piggies, roasties and gravy the rest of Christmas dinner can buzz off! Xmas Grin

MistressMerryWeather · 18/12/2016 14:46

We don't have a starter either but I would never turn my nose up at one if someone else is hosting.

shivermytimbers · 18/12/2016 14:46

Celeriac eh? That was a brave move but I imagine very tasty. Hearing about other people's makes me want to add a few more dishes

MrsJayy · 18/12/2016 14:47

Your dinner sounds lovely and like every bodies dinner just leave the common pigs in blankets off their plates Grin

MarjorieSimpson · 18/12/2016 14:48

YANBU
That sounds like what my very traditional PIL would do.

And you are the chef, so you get to decide Grin

SnatchedPencil · 18/12/2016 14:48

It sounds a bit excessive but then that is what Christmas food, Christmas lunch in particular, is all about!

I've never heard of sprouts in bacon before but let's face it, bacon improves anything. "Pigs in blankets" probably are "common" but again, the bacon-improves-anything principle applies - this benefits of bacon outweigh any argument against it.

EatTheCake · 18/12/2016 14:48

Looks normal size to me.

We don't have starter as waste of tummy space

We have five bird roast, roast potatoes, sprouts, parsnips, carrots. Pigs in blankets, peas, yorkshires. Gravy

Then people can either have xmas pud with brandy butter or cheesecake

Charley50 · 18/12/2016 14:49

I like having a starter because I'm always starving by the time I've cooked dinner, and it helps me eat my lovingly prepared roast a bit slower. Your menu sounds good OP. You gotta have a cheese board for later though?

Katedotness1963 · 18/12/2016 14:49

I think it sounds perfect! I do my sprouts with bacon and chestnuts, even the picky child will eat them that way.

LionelRitchieAndTheWardrobe · 18/12/2016 14:49

YANBU. Sounds perfectly normal.

Our is:

Turkey with Christmas stuffing (lemon zest and watercress)
Chestnut stuffing (served separately)
Pigs in blankets
Devils on horseback
Roast potatoes
Roast carrots
Brussels
Bread sauce
Delia Smith's cranberry relish
Gravy

Christmas pudding with 3 choices of sauce or sticky toffee pudding or profiteroles.

GreenTureen · 18/12/2016 14:50

Op we're having garlic sprouts with bacon. It's bloody lovely and yes, still goes with gravy!

RoganJosh · 18/12/2016 14:50

I wonder if your DH is having a 'it's not how I used to have it as a child' tantrum.

70sDinnerPartyClassic · 18/12/2016 14:50

Unless you are going to give it to them pre-plated Grin I can't see the problem. If you don't like it don't have it.

I think though that this is your DH getting nerves about hosting his parents rather than any genuine issue with your food. Are his parents a bit snotty? He's probably got a fixed idea in his head based on how they do xmas and as yours isn't exactly the same he's worried they won't like it.

Could be that anyway. But YANBU sounds fine to me.

MrsJayy · 18/12/2016 14:50

Only thing i wouldnt eat is christmas pudding i don't like it
