Seriously are people constantly looking out for a way to be offended Hmm first world problems!

OP posts:
Bauble16 · 18/12/2016 16:36

I agree, Bauble. I find rape, FGM and the potential rolling back of women's rights worldwide absolutely shocking too. That was what you meant, wasn't it?

Yes these are issues I find shocking. Real issues that I would never take lightly. There are threads that totally deflect from what is really important though, ones that in the grand scheme of things are creating a bad name for feminism.

DameDeDoubtance · 18/12/2016 16:36

Wow. I've just caught up with the thread and it seems some people are really concerned for middle aged men who travel to Thailand. Okay.

Saw Rogue one and it was awesome, even had a Women lead which has majorly upset lots of people.

BeyondIBringYouGoodTidings · 18/12/2016 16:38

You don't have to link bauble, perhaps just give us some vague ideas of what these deflecting issues are?

DioneTheDiabolist · 18/12/2016 16:38

Only 7% of people in the UK identify as feminist, I don't think lazy, sexist, gendered insults such as "handmaidens" and "cool wives" help the cause.Hmm

DameDeDoubtance · 18/12/2016 16:39

A lot of the small issues are linked to the larger issue though, like a web. Plus I find that I can care about big issues and smaller issues at the same time.

BertrandRussell · 18/12/2016 16:39

"They are there. I have seen them"

So link to one.

Boundaries · 18/12/2016 16:41

miss, without wishing to hector you, could you please link to some evidence for the many assertions you have made.

BertrandRussell · 18/12/2016 16:43

Practically every general thread about feminism comes back eventually to "Feminists are always saying horrible things. No, I utterly refuse to give any details, you go and find them" and "Feminists just need to be nicer. People would listen to feminists if only they were nicer"

Boundaries · 18/12/2016 16:45

Fuck, Betrand, women would get on better if they were just nicer. And maybe wore ribbons.

PacificDogwod · 18/12/2016 16:45

Really? Gawd, that is depressing.

I fail to see how one can have a vagina and not be a feminist.

MyPeriodFeatures · 18/12/2016 16:47

Ah, brilliant.

As a former salaried professional who fled domestic abuse and now living off an income I barely get by on as I'm a lone parent and lost my job due to their inflexibility and having an ill child - I'll enjoy reading this thread tonight while I'm alone at home (again) the whole 29 pages will fill my evening I'm sure

Missswatch · 18/12/2016 16:48

I fail to see how one can have a vagina and not be a feminist

If you are strong and independent enough you don't need to be one

PacificDogwod · 18/12/2016 16:48

I'm nice Smile

Boundaries · 18/12/2016 16:49

I refer you to the wisdom of Betrand, Pacific

Perhaps the other 93% are all too busy being nice?

Confused
Bauble16 · 18/12/2016 16:49

You don't have to link bauble, perhaps just give us some vague ideas of what these deflecting issues are?

Hmm. OK, well one thread I recently viewed was a debate about straps on gym equipment been large in size and more for men. Surely gym equipment is made to adjust to fit all and I've seen plenty of weights in the gym used by both men and women . I just think threads like this are making something of nothing when real issues exist.

blackcherries · 18/12/2016 16:49

"I fail to see how one can have a vagina and not be a feminist

I read this without reading who posted it and thought what a witty send-up of misswatch this was. Poe's law...

PacificDogwod · 18/12/2016 16:49

If you are strong and independent, Miss, you are a feminist.
Particularly if you also look out for those around you who are not as strong and independent as you.

Boundaries · 18/12/2016 16:50

Miss

If you are strong and independent enough you don't need to be one

Ok. You're having us on, aren't you?

BeyondIBringYouGoodTidings · 18/12/2016 16:50

Come on missS, you've managed so far to stick to the side of not-quite-goady, why change now?

PacificDogwod · 18/12/2016 16:52

Oh, Bertrand has taught me lots over the years, and I usually agree with her. And even if I don't, she makes me think.

DameDeDoubtance · 18/12/2016 16:52

Being strong and independent won't protect you from a system that is set up to treat you unfairly. Even if it did wouldn't you want to help your daughter out or other young girls and women?

blackcherries · 18/12/2016 16:53

bauble ok, and what was the argument actually being made on that thread?

DeviTheGaelet · 18/12/2016 16:56

Surely gym equipment is made to adjust to fit all and I've seen plenty of weights in the gym used by both men and women
Proving the point there! No it isn't made to fit all, it's made to fit most men and therefore if you a petite female it won't fit.
You assume it's made to fit all but you haven't actually checked.
This extends to other things, like female heart attack sufferers being massively underdiagnosed because the diagnostic symptoms are based on how males present with heart attacks.
Default human = man, maybe the examples seem trivial but they add up to at best excluding women from things because equipment is designed for them and at worse causing death.

DioneTheDiabolist · 18/12/2016 16:57

I too find it depressing Pacific. And of course, not all of those feminists are women. I think feminism has a problem if 90% of women do not identify as such.Sad

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 18/12/2016 17:00

I'll confess I've not read the entire thread. But I really agree with this.
