(with apologies to Oscar Wilde)

Wow!

Yahoo gets hacked (again) in 2013 and loses 1 billion email accounts.

Apparently it's got something to do with 'false cookies' - and the fact that Yahoo has a way you can stay logged in even if you turn off your computer.

YANBU. Insanity. Fucking insanity.

Clearly they need to hire some hackers?!

I'm quite impressed they have 1 billion accounts. But most of them are probably spam accounts so they've hacked the spammers to create more spam.

I'm surprised Yahoo still has the default stay logged in option.

You don't ever see anyone using a yahoo email account, do you? I rarely if ever do.

I reckon it's hundreds of millions of people who haven't shut down their old email accounts. I have one because of the Yahoo Groups -but after this I will delete it. Do they give you an option of deleting your account entirely- I hope so. Getting rid of my AOL account all those years ago was a nightmare!

the forged cookie hacker basically allowed themselves to create a cookie that when read by yahoo would say ah ok this user is logged in (even though the hacker had not logged in using a password) - a user staying signed in would not make any difference to this hack and yahoo have stated that they have invalidated the forged cookies so this hacker should no longer be able to use this vector to access email accounts. But yanbu it's a complete cluster fuck!
I never see anyone using yahoo in the uk, but still popular in lots of other counties particularly in Asia and think quite popular in India too.

LeadPipe · 15/12/2016 10:32

I see, I didn't realise it was popular in other countries! How awful!

I'd be really annoyed if it was my main email account.
